Mobile Advice

Due a new mobile and stuck between two phones, the HTC desire and the Blackberry Bold 9700.

Considered the iphone but really don't think the tarrifs represent value for £££ and for the amount I want to pay per month I would have to pay over £100 for the phone.

The only thing holding me back from the HTC Desire is battery life, apparently its supposed to be a little better than the iphone, but the iphones battery life is supposed to be shockingly bad.

Anyone has any advice would be much appreciated

New iPhones don't have bad batteries, it's only over time that they deteriorate. If you take them into the Apple store before your warranty expires they will replace it/the phone for you.

How often do you have to charge it though Ackey (and how much do you use it)? Can it last 1-2 days with moderate use (some sms/some email/the odd call/using it as a walkman)

Before I lost my old one no. But I think most 3GS ones will last you a couple of days. 4th Gen should be announced tomorrow hopefully - then we'll know more.

4th gen ones apparently have 16 percent bigger battery, and powered by the chips that power the ipads. Still swayed towards the blackberry at the moment though as dont really wanna pay a bomb for the phone

It uses some of the same tech as the iPad, that's a certainty. It will have a significantly better battery as they know that was a criticism of the other devices. Personally I'm really excited by it.

I know that will then see me levelled with the fanboi tag but I know that's not the case. No one can deny that the original iPhone changed the handheld market forever. Others have now adapted and that can only be a good thing - competition is what forces people to strive to produce the next innovation that will once again change the game.

You are only excited because you currently have to use your sisters old Nokia!

Well the ipad can comfortably play video for 10 hrs on a single charge or somethign like that. I think apple's a4 chip uses significantly less power than the snapdragon processor in the google phone and HTC. Battery life has always been the problem with smart phones, I know some people who say they have to charge their iphones twice a day. But Apple as a company has made a big big thing about battery life in their laptops, hence would not surprise me to see try to head in the same direction with the iphones.

They're working to improve both the batteries they use and the efficiency of their products just like every other company out there.

I'd be interested to see some changes with the 4th Gen that really push the benchmark again (wireless charging would be a start) but I think we'll be waiting another 12-18months for that kind of leap.

One thing I would say about apple as someone who uses macs, is never buy first gen apple hardware. Although the first gen iphone did break grounds in many areas, the iphone 3g was the iphone apple should have released from the off.

From what I can gather, this one will probably be more evolution than revolution,

- 5 megapixel camera with LED flash

- front camera for video calls

- Possibly 32gb/64gb configs

- 16% bigger battery

- higher screen resolution 640 x 960

If they can significantly increase the battery, may take a punt on one of these

Assuming it follows the form that Gizmodo 'found' then that's all a fair bet. I'm not sure video calling is the future. That, I'd say, is just being added to appease the Japanese market where it's hugely popular. I certainly don't see myself ever using it.

The key is battery life, screen quality and improved camera.

Two of which will be improved significantly. Would expect only a marginal improvement in battery life

I have video calling on my nokia n82, have never used it yet

I had it on my Nokia three-ish years ago and never used it then, but like I say the Japanese absolutely love it.

+1, especially this year.

With the original iPhone, the 3g and the 3gs in the early days the only competition Apple had was

- windows smart phones: Nowhere near as many apps as the iPhone

- phones with symbian OS: My N82 uses symbian OS, and it is well and truly an unpolished turd compared to the iphone OS

- Blackberrys: Have advantages of their own but more tailored to business users

With the introduction of the android phones, in particular the Google Nexus One, HTC Legend and HTC Desire, Apple will definitely have to up their game. Was playing with a HTC Desire today and was really really impressed with the OS. Only thing that has stopped me pulling the trigger is the battery life, which is apparently piss poor.

it's a bit of a myth with relation to the battery life of the desire ..... i've had mine a few weeks now and like you say at first i'd struggle to get through a day and get home with little more than 20% left!

then a mate told me about 'app' killing! basically you download one of the free app killers, stick it on as a shortcut, then once you've done what you need to do ie emails/texts/other stuff ... press the app killer and it stops them all from continuing to be on in the background!

result i'm on the phone all the time ... and still get home with around 85% at the end of the day!

you know it makes sense!!! desire is the future!!!!!!

And you can also have a widget on your front screen can't you that allows you to switch off the GPS/bluetooth/wifi/3g?

I'll not comment on the fact that you have to turn off everything just make your phone usable, as that would be seen as fanboi-ish!:lol:

What do you usually keep turned on/off on your iphone?

My iPhone is lining the pockets of a scally somewhere. Before that I didn't have to open/close anything. The only thing I did was to turn off WiFi unless I was actually using it.

But you're not really turning stuff off are you? It's no different than having a laptop with all the programmes running and having them closed down as opposed to all open but reduced down on the screen!

And to answer the OP ...yeah you can turn off the wifi etc if not being used also

Another desire user here.

If I could I would get another one, trying to get my wife to get one too, such a good piece of kit.

Battery life isn't great but for all the stuff you can do it isn't that bad, I've just bought another micro-usb cable and plugged it into my work pc to charge it up there during the day if it needs to.
