Super League & The Roughyeds

Recommended Posts

The new Super League season starts less than a fortnights time and the Roughyeds start their Northern Rail Cup campaign against Hunslet Hawks at home next Sunday.

Roughyeds have looked pretty decent in pre-season, beating Whitehaven 50-0 in the last game. Surely it'll be 4th time lucky to get out of this league. Think we'll have to finish top of the league as we're about as good at play-off finals as Andy Murray is at Grand Slam finals!

Yeah, getting itchy feet myself - can't wait for Millenium Magic weekend and the World Club challenge where I hopefully get to see my Aussie team pummel the Pies...

Should be great. I'll be picking and choosing my games to attend with my free season ticket and watching the rest on sky.

Looking forward to some biff this season.

This is a serious question and isn't really a dig at anyone as I am hardly innocent on this one.

How many people on here regularly have a go at the people of Oldham not supporting Latics, yet support a Super League Club over the Roughyeds?

can of worms mate...can of worms...

Followed Oldham home and away for about 12 years, started going to Watersheddings the same time I started going to BP. As I say I campaigned, wrote letters and protested about leaving 'Sheddings, I was part of a small voice. The rest of the town sat back and let it happen as far as i'm concerned. (The same town that has allowed this situation to develop at BP with poor crowds and a dilapidated stadium that will soon be gone forever - but that's another discussion.)

I tried to get behind the Phoenix Club but the town had deserted the club and playing at BP, Hurst Cross, Bower Fold, Sedgeley Park etc… just deepened my resentment. Oh and the fact that Hamilton is a cock. I fell out of love with RL for three or four years, eventually I began going to the odd game and got more and more interested in St. Helens, such so that I now regard myself as more of a Saints than Oldham fan. I had a season ticket for a couple of years and may get another one once they're back in St. Helens. This year I'll go to the odd game but I get just as much pleasure from watching my son play for St. Anne's. I'm glad to see that ORLFC have now got their permanent home after 14 years on the road, Sadly, I've moved on...

I must admit part of me does worry whether I and others will go the same way if we (OAFC) lead a similar nomadic existence...

I go to Roughyeds games when I can. I have a free season ticket at Leeds Rhinos and pick and choose the games I go to there. The rest I watch on tele.

I watch a lot of amateur games around Leeds and occasionally pop back for Waterhead games.

I can watch RL as a neutral far easier than any other sport.

I watch Oldham football home and away. I enjoy football but often struggle to watch it as a neutral. Rugby league still holds my interest. The games have more entertainment for my money.

Saints are my local team. The only thing that makes me a traitor is supporting Latics, and i'm sure Liverpool and Everton will struggle on without my support.

Looking forward to this season, i think Saints post-Mick Potter could be a lot like Latics post-Dave Penney. Hopefully Widnes won't be too much of a nightmare to get to. And it'll be interesting to see how long Joel Monaghan lasts before he gets sick of hearing Who Let The Dogs Out and Puppy Love every week.

Yeah, I'd missed the Monaghan thing until I watched the SL Preview Show this morning, googled it and PMSL, Warrington have got their very own Keith Lard!!!!

As for Saints I think we'll make the Play Offs with ease. KC will be a massive loss but Roby will step up to the plate and if Moore can rediscover the form he showed whilst on loan at the Gay Farm then we've got good options at Hooker. Soliola will be like a new signing, and Shenton excites me as does LMS and of course we've Perry to come in soon too. Two things that do worry me is Pryce is injured again and we need him up to speed as he's a big player for us when he fancies it. And of course the speculation around biscuit boy, of will he/won't he stay, will not help morale imo and the fact he spends more time limping than he does out on the meadow. We shall see anyway, we're notoriously slow starters in SL and I think it'll be close tonight with the pies running away with it in the final quarter. (I hope i'm wrong!)

Saints 16-16 Wigan, not sure how we dug that one out! Bit stunned tbh, still more questions than answers and many of the same old failings seem to remain. Anyway happy days!

Just gonna watch Dire v Hudds now, Sky +ed from earlier….

There's a full page article on the new Super League season in the Guardian today, most of it on Monaghan. So THAT'S what you have to do to get the London media to cover rugby league. They should have let us know, i'm sure Jamie Peacock would have happily got it on with someone's pet dog years ago if it was for the good of the game.

Not for the first time today, good draw. Meli continues to be frustratingly crap in defence but tries to make up for it at the other end of the pitch. Shenton looks like a good addition to the squad, and i really hope we can keep hold of Eastmond.

I would whole heartedly agree, lots of good RL teams nearby, none of whom have ever really held any sway over me. I do tend to root for those from Greater Manchester first though.

I'm not from Oldham, but I went through a phase about 10 years ago when I started following Braford Bulls because at the time my group of friends at the time all supported a Super League team, now all of them were Man Utd/City fans who never went to games but for me I felt I had to watch Bradford if I could but as a result of the fact Bradford was over 30 miles away and a bugger to get to from Glossop I just couldn't build an affiliation with the club and lost interest. I'm currently in Sheffield and I couldn't help notice that they have an offer on where if you attend a Sheff Utd match you get a free ticket to a Sheffield Eagles match at the Lane and in visa versa

Speaking of Bradford looks like Mr. Potter has brought his crap 'play for 65 minutes, before snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, due to a lack of stamins' philosophy….:shock:

Bradford deserved to win that game I thought.

Definite penalty try though.

Look like they could be back with a bit of a bang though the Bulls. Some very good signings in the off season.

Leeds without McGuire and Peacock might struggle a bit. Got a great pair in Watkins and Jones-Bishop who might cause some damage this year.

Cas looked like a good side. Think that might be more to do with Wakey being poor though.

Really enjoy watching Huddersfield at the moment too. Some great youngsters there.

Roughyeds got a bit of a battering against Halifax yesterday losing 50-10 in the NRC. Halifax are in the league above so not much to be shamed about. Already beat Hunslet who are in the same league as Halifax.

Next in the NRC is away at Swinton on Sunday 3pm who are playing at The Willows nowadays.

I'm glad to see that ORLFC have now got their permanent home after 14 years on the road, Sadly, I've moved on...

Up until their first and final year in Super league I'd been going th the 'Yeds since I was 1!!! After that I was at University, then London and unlike Latics they never played outside the M62 corridor until they started to play the Skolars (whom I have been involved with since 1996) so interest fell. I actually support the Skolars when they play each other now.

Super League as to be Quins RL (even got a few run outs with their reserve teams many monns ago when they were Broncos) for me and I use to coach against their current Coach Rob. Soft spot for Wigan, dislike for Leeds / Saints.

!986 first year going to Latics, I was certainly a glory hunter. Lucky I got in the best years before I started playing open age, Town, conuty at League as this took up all my time. Really until about 4 years ago I went to only about 4/5 Latics games a year.

I can watch RL as a neutral far easier than any other sport.

Likewise watched 7 games this weekend (including NRL allstar game) I just can't get enough of the game. Pre-season starts next Monday, it's getting harder to play and be the head coach ...

Heard a large section of the crowd barking towards him near the end of the game.... funny as!!

Wasn't unexpected, Halifax will be challenging for the Championship Grand Final. Oldham's goal has to be a return to the Halliwell Jones and to get that elusive win to get back into the Championship where they will benefit from more exposure and TV money.

Bradford deserved to win that game I thought - They did, but ran out of steam, a lot like Saints did under Potter

Definite penalty try though - I said that right away to be fair

Look like they could be back with a bit of a bang though the Bulls. Some very good signings in the off season. - They look a better side this year BUT its one game, the lad on the wing looks a handful.

Leeds without McGuire and Peacock might struggle a bit. Got a great pair in Watkins and Jones-Bishop who might cause some damage this year. - Leeds have a habit of blooding kids that come good very quickly.

Cas looked like a good side. Think that might be more to do with Wakey being poor though. - Big year for Cas with the licenses being announced in July

Really enjoy watching Huddersfield at the moment too. Some great youngsters there. - Hudds always flatter to deceive, as you say they're good to watch but just have a habit of falling apart when it matters.

Want to avoid the play-offs. Champions please! No doubt be another Grand Final awaits!
