"There's 1,200 players out of contract in the summer and a lot of them in there think they're good enough to go and get another club - on that performance I would doubt that."

We really do need to trim down the squad size then!

Just seen the goals.

We were opened up at will. Very, very poor on each and every one.

Credit to their lad who kicked it out when Black went down. Not sure I'd have wanted a Latics player to do the same in that position.

While the players on the pitch have a responsibility, the injuries to Furman and Wesolowski obviously don't help. They are a huge part of the balance of the team.

But Dickov needs to rethink how he achieves balance in the side. I do think Winchester (assuming full fitness) is a better bet in the middle of the park than Taylor. I really don't think Lee should be at left back and Diamond certainly, from a few clips on FLS, isn't a right back.

While Morais and Marsh Brown looked the part for half a game on Tuesday night, do they give us the solidity we need? This is a question that han't really been answered since Alessandra / Jones playing wide came to an injury / discipliniary halt last season.

If we're going to have a rookie left back (Mellor, Diallo, loanee) then I think Taylor on the left is essential.

It's a difficult one for Dickov. But when a side has struggled to score goals, not conceding becomes even more important. Two out of position full backs protected by players who are clearly more attacking focused and a central midfield that isn't first choice doesn't make life easy.

Time for PD to earn his money and work out the best solution with the resources he has.

I was there yesterday.First half we weren't that bad.We strung a few passes together a few times and looked okay. The first goal came from a mistake by M'voto who didn't clear the ball when he should have done then seconds later he gave away the penalty.
Second half we just lost the plot, nobody seemed to know what position they were supposed to be playing.
When Dickov blasts the players he could do with blasting himself......Diamond at right back ?

Just seen the goals.

We were opened up at will. Very, very poor on each and every one. Ball-watching, has seriously crept into our game and has bit us on the arse yesterday. From those (brief) lowlights it looks like M'Voto had a shocker.

I can understand PD not wanting to expose young lads like Mellor and Winchester at one of the better teams, but when we were down to the bare bones early in the season he had no choice and played both at Scunny coming off a run of beginning the season with three straight defeats. The result? a battling performance that yielded three points and set us off for the season. Taylor obviously is our senior pro after Shefki Sulqi, but he is no midfielder. The manager's stubborness was an accident waiting to happen as i said after the game on Tuesday night. Against a pisspoor Walsall team we (just about) got away with it.

While Morais and Marsh Brown looked the part for half a game on Tuesday night, do they give us the solidity we need? This is a question that han't really been answered since Alessandra / Jones playing wide came to an injury / discipliniary halt last season. Again this was my fear, I came to the conclusion that Morais was a liability away from home, in the game at The Dongs last season, the lad rarely tracks back or if he does it is a token challenge, and KMB is cut from the same cloth. Whilst many have got on Josh Parker's back he will track back, as we saw at Scunny earlier in the season

If we're going to have a rookie left back (Mellor, Diallo, loanee) then I think Taylor on the left is essential. I agree, yes Taylor has been disappointing this season but I don't think anyone will dispute he puts a shift in, I think as much of a threat Morais and Marsh-Brown are, playing both from the start - especially away from home is a risk

I think Dickov should be rightly criticised, yes we haven't a pot to piss in, and what is going on off the field is anyone's guess, yes we have injuries but he is not learning from last season. He's playing the same 4411 system that almost saw us go down, with Tonk going 21 games without a goal, this season it has worked up to a point but our only threat comes from Simpson and Kuqi has gone 13 games without a goal, I know some (harshly) don't rate Smith, but with a run of home games coming up it's time for Dickov to show faith in some of his signings and play the buggers

My team for Tranmere

Cisak
Lee
Tarky
Diamond
Mellor
KMB
Adeyemi
Winchester
Taylor
Smith
Simpson

Kuqi needs a rest, as for the others i'm not sure who PD was referring to for throwing the towel in but I know who my money would be on. The sooner we get Furman back the better, bearing in mind Tom only has a fortnight of his loan left.

HOWEVER:

There's bigger matters that need questioning here too, silence from the boardroom about this club moving forward is deafening. We've a director interfering in playing affairs, we've supposedly got a £1 million loss to try and recoup - how I really don't know given the thinness of the squad and austerity measures flowing through the club - why no-one is asking serious questions about this I simply don't know) we have very few big earners at the club. We have a handful of players contracted beyond this season and a year after the toys came out of the pram, we've heard nothing about the ground redevelopment. Oh and of course we have barely two years left at Boundary Park before BP can be bulldozed and TTA can do what the hell they like with the land.

One thing that did leave me mystified was the club whining about the cost of laying another artificial surface, now I know for a fact the last pitch was funded through grants and a loan. Widnes' pitch was paid through a mixture of private funding, RFL, Lottery and community grants. The chances are those clubs that get in first will get the funding - of course we'll have to find some capital but given the money due from Failsworth and the community grants and loans that have been promised a return to an artificial surface at BP shouldn't really be that much of a hurdle to overcome if the desire to deliver it is there. The pitch like the last one would pay for itself and earn the club vital revenue. It's time the club began to deliver a can do attitude both on and off the field instead of feeling sorry for itself. I thought we had hit rock bottom by crowds dropping to sub-4,000 now we're seeing sub-3,000 the club badly needs a shot in the arm.

I went yesterday and it was the worst latics preformance i have ever seen by a mile

Not taking anything away from franchise, they are a very good side and try and play football from front to back, but what i cant take is a lack of passion and commitment

Cisak for the 1st time i have seen with hi looked shakky 2nd half, lee did ok, mvoto was terrible, tarky was my mom easily and stood up and was counted, black struggled when he was on but wasnt helped helped by marsh-brown who was massively ineffective didnt helped there fans booed him every time he was on the ball which was rare, adeymi competed but taylor was obviously out of his comfort zone in there still dont know why winchester didnt play or come on, morais to be fair kept wanting the ball and other than tarky is the only one who prob will come out with credit, simpson was off sorts but one the better players least he stood up and was counted and kuqi the less said the better milk could turn quicker, speaking to dons fans after they thought he was as bad a stiker as they have played against

all in all a terrible day at the office we really needed furman and wes back and the latter certainly wont be soon, on that preformance i come away slighlty worried if im honest, i have faith in taggart and dickov

Oh and the ref was the worst i have seen all season overweight prick was more intretsed in playing to the crowd, far from his fault we lost but was so shocking as well as the flag happy assistant

Im usually so positive but after that even i was struggling and seeing that hurt

It's a long time since Corney said "we wouldn't do that" in respect of administration or stiffing the football club completely.

If there's a 1m shortfall (or 700k after Liverpool), who's plugging it? If it isn't Blitz, it's somebody else who has the power to pull the plug.

While I would quite like to hear a bit more from the boardroom (and the fan on the board), I'm conscious that this time last season Corney's rant preceded (and in my view contributed to) a massive decline on the pitch and a few week's later we were failing to pay wages.

And I'm sure Diego can reference a link to him saying he'll say nothing more until the finance is in place.

While I think there's been a lot of knee-jerk reactions and extreme negativity on here since yesterday's game, I think this post is absolutely spot on o4u.

I'd say that was our first poor performance of 2012. Sure we've only won 1 so far this year but we've been doing the right things. All 3 games against Chesterfield we had so many chances to win those games. Liverpool was a good performance against better opposition. Huddersfield was a bit off and we should have battered Exeter.

We are doing the right things I believe but the players aren't making the most of it and then making stupid, silly mistakes all the time. MVoto is a particular culprit, 2 penalties given away and a crazy header to gift Chesterfield their Wembley trip in the last 3 games. For most of the season he has been very poor indeed.

In defence of JYM I can't think of the other penalty he's given away since the turn of the year - Adeyemi at Anfield, Tarky at Chesterfield and Lee against Walsall ... Jesus those are three shocking decisions against us!!

And the header (or was it shoulder) in the Chesterfield game was a direct result of Cisak coming for a ball that was never in a million years one for the goalkeeper ... mainly because it was outside the area!

When Dickov blasts the players he could do with blasting himself......Diamond at right back ?

In fairness he did say "I would like to apologise to the fans because collectively, myself included, we were not good enough." I'm not sure i'd want him to go into an extended rant about his own failings as manager, i doubt he'd get much respect from the players for coming out after the game and saying he can't do his own job properly.
Trying to look on the bright side (aside from just refusing to acknowledge the result because Franchise aren't a real club anyway so the game doesn't really count),hopefully it'll be the kick up the arse some of the players need and they'll take it out on Tranmere next week. We did go on a 5 game losing run after getting battered 5-0 by Peterborough last season though, maybe we'll see now whether we've progressed since then.

Agree with most of those posts to be fair - we have to acknowledge weaknesses and unfortunate set backs, but the current side is capable of much better.

Clearly the loss of Furman and Wes in the middle of the park is pretty devastating, but too many games have been lost through sloppy defending.

Totally agree too about Taylor being required to cover his full-back, especially if we're playing lads who aren't specialist in the position like Mellor.

Ultimately though I think the biggest issue is Kuqi and his total inability to score. He looks like he could fail to score with 90 minutes and no opposition. So many close games have swung on our missing big chances, it is killing us.

Also though a little bit of luck wouldn't go amiss, such as a penalty at Huddersfield when Diamond was fouled late on, no deflected equalisers at Anfield and less dodgy penalties at Chesterfield... We desperately need something to break our way, because at the minute we seem incapable of making it happen.

Dickov under the spotlight too, because ultimately we have some pretty decent players regardless of budget and we should not be where we are in the league. Too many really poor games chucked away.
