OWTB World Cup Prediction Competition

Recommended Posts

More details to follow, when I've got my :censored: together, but this is coming soon.

Similar to the Euros competition a couple of years ago - £5 entry; half of the fees allocated to prizes; the other half to be split between PlayerShare and Latics for Life.

Here it is, folks.

This is how it works:

  • Complete your predictions in the attached Excel spreadsheet (see download link at the foot of this post) - instructions included in the spreadsheet. If there's anything you're not sure about, give me a shout.
  • Email your completed sheet to me at
    stevie_j@owtb.co.uk
(please note the underscore in the email address - not a space).
  • Pay £5 by PayPal to the same email address, providing me with your OWTB username in the comments box.
  • Any OWTB staff member taking part will have a copy of their predictions posted in this thread, so there can be no accusations of cheating (in the wholly unlikely event that one of us wins).
  • The total fees will be distributed as follows:
    • Half to be used as a prize fund to be distributed: 50% to the winner; 30% to second place; and 20% to third place.
    • The other half, minus fees, to be donated equally between PlayerShare and Latics for Life.
  • Scoring works as follows:

Group Stages:

  • Getting the right result irrelevant of the score (i.e. win, loss, draw) - 3 points
  • Getting team 1′s correct score (e.g. you predicted 1-1 and the score was 1-0) - 1 point
  • Getting team 2′s correct score (e.g. you predicted 3-2 and the score was 2-2) - 1 point

World Cup Knock-out Stages Sweepstakes scoring

  • Each correct team in the Second Round - 3 points
  • Each correct team in the Second Round and Quarter Finals - 4 points
  • Each correct team in the Semi Finals - 5 points
  • Each Correct Team in the Finals - 6 points
  • Correct Winner - 15 points

The spreadsheet isn't as good as it might be, but was the best I could get hold of. It provides the scoring above. However, I am going to manually add the following:

  • Results points for the Knockout Stages as per the Group Stages, for games where you have correctly predicted that the two teams involved will meet each other at that stage of the competition.
  • For knockout games, the score predicted will count AET, if the game goes into extra-time.
  • If you want to predict that a game will go to penalties, enter your scores as a decimal (i.e. 1.5-1.3 means 1-1 AET, team A wins 5-3 on penalties).
  • 1 point to be awarded for correctly predicting that a team will win on penalties.
  • 2 points to be awarded for correctly predicting the penalty shootout score.
  • Golden Boot Winner - 20 points - Please state your prediction in your email, when you send me the spreadsheet.

So please sign up and make me work at scoring this up, whilst putting yourself in with a chance of wining a few quid, benefit PlayerShare and Latics for Life, and making the competition a little bit more interesting.

Any problems, give me a shout by PM or email. Cheers.

(Oh :censored:. Shouldn't have done that. Now no one else will want to have a go because they'll feel intimidated.)

If you want to rush down the bookies now and make a killing, Brazil beat Belgium 2-1 in the final. Well done Brazil!

England score one goal (in a draw against Costa Rica). Italy and Uruguay beat us.

After your last League season's performance, I ain't scared. So there. And neither Brazil nor Belgium will be in the final. So there, again. With knobs on.

Done, sent, paid. You can donate my winnings (as there surely will be) to Playershare.

No one should be scared. My total focus is on the bread and butter of the prediction league. The world cup is just a bit of fun and a chance to secure some lucrative endorsement deals.

It goes without saying that my winnings (haha!) go to Playershare. Is that why I have so many prediction league haters? I can't fathom the animosity.

When I did the Euros one in 2012 I spent too long sat cross-legged working out the potential ramifications of the final group games and broke my foot.

I'm sorry, I just can't afford to take the chance this time around.

After sitting atop of the table for so long, before throwing it all away in the late stages, I thought you of all people would be out to show that you've got the minerals not to bottle it this time around.

There's a Liverpool/Gerrard joke in there but I'm not going there. #rosascaresme

My crystal ball hasn't had a dusting in a while. Can I change my top scorer prediction? Looks like Suarez is crocked.

You're losing the plot, you know. You've already stated Brazil to beat Belgium in the Final. Suarez is Uruguayan, so his injury won't matter.

Ah, I get it. You're winding us up, you likkle tinker.

This time...there's points for top scorer separately. It's quite possible for Suarez to be top scorer even if Uruguay don't win. Therefore, with Suarez crocked, I might like to nominate a new golden boot monkey.

Entered.

England sneak through ahead of Italy on goals scored but lose on penalties to Colombia after an entertaining 2-2 draw in the second round.

Bosnia are the surprise quarter finalists.

Brazil v Argentina in the final. Brazil winning of course.
