gym in the new stand

Recommended Posts

was just wondering if anyone new who was running the new gym within the new stand ?, is it being rented out or are the club doing it all?

Deal close to being finalised with an operator.

Given the new link up with Sports direct may poss be LA fitness. No evidence for that.

The latest NSB (North Stand Blog (22nd May) says :

"The glazing on the second floor facing to the pitch has been reduced from full height to accommodate the use of that floor for offices as the gym has been relocated."

So where is the gym going to be relocated to and who is taking the offices (sounds like a deal has been done. (doubt it's the club taking the offices as that wouldn't generate any income)

Potentially the NHS, probably cheaper to rent at Latics than convert old wards into office space.

Very much so, especially in the short-term, several years down the line it might not be. Then again by that point the NHS will have probably gone through another few reorganisations and if the Tories have their way will become mainly private.

It would be a nice money earner to have it rented out to the NHS, guaranteed lease, passing trade for the cafe and other outlets the stand will have. Maybe even parking income? Sounds like SC may finally be having a win with the stand after years of frustration.

Not how the modern NHS works. Cut backs to the front line, increaces to the backroom administrative jobs.

Unfortunate, hopefully something that could change... Probably won't though.

  • 4 weeks later...

SC in his recent Laticsplayer interview says that the gym is going to be on the ground floor and "hopefully a medical unit on the top floor".

That's certainly a modification from the original plans.

No idea how much could be made out of a private medical facility. Specialising in sporting injuries perhaps? Or maybe just an NHS offering where Latics collect some rent.

Yeah really clever- put a gym primarily for healthy, active people on the ground floor and then put a medical facility for injured/ill people on the top floor, hope the lifts are good. Also if the top floor is above the third floor, the standard NHS rule of thumb is you need an extra lift for each additional floor over the third. I'd think the medical unit will probably get used by those using the private physiotherapy clinic that the physios run from about 4pm onwards, prior to that I wouldn't be surprised to see it get used as an outpatient area by Pennine Acute NHS Trust.

I am fairly sure I read somewhere a couple of months back that a third lift was being added.

It all supports the view that the extra £2m isn't an overspend. It's an investment.

I understand it was quite a large change and that was partly why building was delayed. The upstairs wasn't big enough for the gym company.

Isn't the top floor the 3rd floor, (or even 2nd if it's ground, 1st, 2nd) so no extra lifts are needed,

I suppose on the ground floor it can be deeper if it uses some of the space under the terracing. Mind you it would have been a big gym on the top floor if it was going to be the full length of the pitch.

Maybe the medical unit is a gym for unhealthy people ;)

The plans define it as ground, 1st, 2nd.

The original gym was on second floor covering the central part of the stand. Perhaps 40% of the length of the pitch.

The ground floor had three retail units, a coffee shop and a supporters bar. Something has to give there to accommodate the gym then.
