jburbri
Expected really but looks like we've paid a fee for Kelly
slystallone
It's not a shock is it, that he's gone. Quicker than I thought though, 1st day of pre-season training. Guessed it might have been drawn out in a "he'll be off, but exactly when" style... He was a very good player was Korey. I guess there will be some who come at it from the 'he wasn't that good anyway' angle; but he was. For how good he was though, he didnt always show it consistently and really boss games as he was capable of doing, and whether it was him or LJ making the decision; he played far too deep. But he's a loss. At this level, he was a real talent. So, what was a Smith / Wes pairing, now we'll see a Jones / Kelly one. Time will tell which one is better for us eh? oafc1955
I can't believe these transfers were seperate deals but there you go......one thing is for certain, Johnson is certainly changing our midfield dynamic. He must really rate Kelly to offer him a 3 year deal and pay a fee. Although we haven't had a potent strikeforce for some time we just don't create enough and hopefully these latest signings will solve the problem. I would still like an experienced front man to come in and maybe a winger + Harkins and then we'll be sorted.
slystallone
Strikes of the Wellens / Vernon deal. That was classed as 2 seperate deals, but neither would have happened if both hadn't have done. I think this looks similar. Bristol Ciry wanted Smith and were prepared to pay a fee. We then wanted Kelly and i'm sure the fees for both reflect the fact that 1 deal needed the other deal. Not a swap, far from it - but a mutual deal that needed both players to move to make it happen?
Markspark92
They would of payed more for Smith then we did for Kelly very good bit of bussiness by LJ impressed with this

Gaz_Oafc
On his day he was quality. A level up from everyone else. Problem is, he had his fair share of off days and, because every single passage of our play had to start off with him, it usually meant the team had an off day too. If he was consistent he'd be a regular in a championship side but he'd have never been here in the first place if that was the case.

opinions4u
Does this support the view that the Championship side that came in for him on deadline day isn't a Championship side anymore and LJ told Dad where to go?

We should be gutted that a player with such quality has gone but, who is? He was better than Furman but suffered from that same problem of making sure he did nothing wrong most of the time rather than putting his neck on the line & trying to make things happen. I wondered whether it was down to him or if those were just his instructions but, the signings of Jones and Kelly suggest Johnson does want more adventure in midfield - had Smith stayed would he have been even more cautious with no Wesolowski alongside (about 30 yards in front of) him? GravityGrave
Best midfielder since Stephens . I trust LJ but, for me , it's a huge loss . Only time will tell how much .

the_mighty_bosh
It's a big loss losing Smith, but obviously time will tell if it was worth it. People talk about him dropping too deep. In a 2 man central midfield then I'd pretty much agree with this, but In the holding midfield role in a 3 man midfield he was the perfect player for that position at this level. While I could certainly understand people getting frustrated by watching us play 4-1-4-1 or similar for most of the season, I'd feel very confident of us having one of the best defensive records in the league with Korey in front of the current back 5. Wilson would sweep up balls over the top, Lockwood would win most things in the air and Smith would break up play on the ground. Whether we would be able to form an effective attacking strategy with the other 5 players would have been the big question for us making top 6. But hey ho the gamble might pay off, it's just one of those times where taking the chance seems more risky to our team shape.
jw_oldh857
a big loss but credit to lee Jonson on this for turning free transfer smith into a decent profit and Liam Kelly coming in for nowt
jburbri
I know it's a loss but at least it's happened now rather than on deadline day where we would probably be taking pot luck.
mikejh45
I always felt that Smith was the best all round midfield player we've had in recent years and that, maybe, where the problem lies. He's not a Wellens in attack or a Hughes in defence so stifles Johnson's choice in a midfield partner. Hopefully, now, we will have a more balanced midfield. mikeroyboy
I'm not big on tactics but I do know we have not had an attacking midfield for a while. Maybe this is what LJ is changing? Time will tell.
c.hill12
For me, with the back 5 as it is there is no need for a 'holding' midfielder, especially at home. Lockwood's good in the air and wilson has abit of pace and can step out of defence. I think LJ has seen this and realised he can afford to go more attacking so hopefully this will be a shrewd move that provides more goals.
