We've had players in the past who were good but just didn't fit in with our style of play (Rooney springs to mind), well Branston was the total opposite, a bad footballer who fit into our system of the time perfectly! He wasn't anything more or less than was to be expected, for every mindless mistake or getting skinned for pace/skill there would be an attacker he would terrify. Ronnie's style of play was archaic but if you are going to play that style then you need players who are going to play it effectively. Branston was one of those players. Fair play to the man for making a career doing something he loves. I'm sure many of us would snap a hand off just for a year as a professional footballer, never mind sixteen. But realistically was he really much worse than most of our other central defenders over the last 20 years? He was on a par with Shaun Garnett I'd say. Terrible footballer in terms of ability on the ball etc But, he was a good club man, a good team member and he was the sort of whole hearted gives everything type of player who you do need around your squad. The Lockwood comparison is pretty fair i'd say. The article isnt funny though? the chaps had a 16 year professional career and has called time on it before his body totally gives up on him.
