Latics' Pitch Narrowed

Recommended Posts

We haven't signed a traditional winger have we? We had 1 player left on the books in Dayton; who it could be argued is a 'stay wide, hug the line winger' type (though he had a very average 1st season with us playing in that style IMO)

He's had Forte and Winchester + Dayton doing the wide roles, and in the way it panned out, none of them were being asked to do the 'traditional' winger role.

There's no point in having a wide pitch, which in turns favours that style of winger, if you don't have that type of player in your side. All it's doing is passing an advantage to the away sides who do have that type of player....

as others have said, time will tell if this benefits us

I can see the clamour for reverting the pitch getting louder, about 10 mins in after the first home game.

CAn't see how it will help, but who knows.

YUou've gotta hope LJ has studied this in some depth.

What is good though, is trying different things, rather than one trick pony play

"If the mountain won't come to Muhammad then Muhammad must go to the mountain." or is it more a result of our wingers refusal to stay wide last season that LJ is bringing the line to them :)

Brilliant.

On the topic, I seem to recall that under JR we had one of the wider pitches in the league. Presumably that was partly because JR felt in Adams and Holden he had the weapons to exploit it - and he was right.

As a result of growing up watching these teams I have a big love of the winger getting to the goal line and whipping crosses in. Absolutely convinced its a better place to put a cross in from, than the spot about 3 yards out from the penatly box / touch line that seems to be dominant these days. Surely its easy to clear a ball with your back to goal facing the ball coming in rather than facing your own goal where you are likely to concede a corner if you do clear it?

But will trust LJ has done this for good reason and has thought it through.

In recent years we seem to have attacted either a tricky winger or a winger who can cross a ball, the last one who could consistently do both was probably Eyresey

The Spurs manager blames the size of the pitch for their lack of success at home.

When Latics were generally regarded as “:censored:e” in home games, the players were forever over-hitting the ball and sending it off the pitch. This doesn’t happen now the pitch is narrower, which defies logic. Surely the reason is that the current players are more skillful in ball-control.

It looks like LJ has been vindicated in narrowing the pitch.

certainly does, but why it has is a curious one. Defies logic as you say.

Anyone know?

And there's me thinking we couldn't possibly score less goals and an upturn in goals and results was going to be due to an upgrade in squad strength.

If the narrowing of the pitch disadvantages some teams surely it would do the opposite for others.

This thread could be running all season. Is it the pitch? Is it the players? Is it the tactics? Have we played into the hands of defensive teams?

I am expecting a half decent campaign based on the assembled squad and tactics, now I have to factor in, is it due to the width of the pitch. There will be no way of telling.

so far so good, but is it the pitch?!

IMO, it's the squad. The improvement has been just as noticeable away from home where some of he better teams in L1 have been throwing all sizes of pitch at us.

There is of course no way of being sure. But it seems as though I could be right with the thread being a runner.

Do you have a link or otherwise to where that statement can be corroborated? cheers!

Trying to find it on the Football League site as we speak - it used to be there somewhere!

EDIT: http://www.football-league.co.uk/global/section4.aspx

13.2 Clubs must register their pitch dimensions with the Executive prior to the start of each Season. It will be misconduct on the part of a Club to alter its pitch dimensions during a Season unless with the prior written consent of the Executive, which consent will only be given in exceptional circumstances. The Executive may at any time require a Club to submit a report from a qualified independent source certifying the pitch dimensions.
