Latics Academy - support getting to category 2 status

Recommended Posts

First of all, congratulations to TP and his team on a great audit result. Oldham has a facility to be proud of. Not just as a football club but as a town.

The bit that stands out for me is this:

We have been given a strong recommendation to apply for catagory two and they said that there is only three clubs out of the whole of the catagory three's they have given that recommendation. We can't do that however because you need a minimum of four of your own pitches which we just haven't got so we are realists

Surely somewhere between the football club, local business, colleges, schools, council, external sponsorship etc. there is an opportunity to build on Tony Philliskirk's talents and let him deliver a legacy of real value for the future.

There must be a way.

Pitchshare?

I'd rather invest in the stars of Ashton United's our future than line the pockets of an overpaid pro.

I love the smell of jargon in the morning.

I understand this is good but, what does it actually all mean?

Only guessing here but I would imagine if we managed Cat 2 status, any funding we get through the FA or whoever would increase to spend on better equipment etc.

I'd also imagine more talented youngsters would want to play for a more reputable youth setup thus giving us the pick of the young talent over the likes of Rochdale and other local youth setups.

The funding provided by the FA/ Premier League is only a top up. The clubs themselves would need to increase funding from a cat 3 to a cat 2 academy as well as provision and upkeep for the extra facilities. Would love it to happen at some point but as a club, everyone (including supporters) would need to embrace what commitment to youth would mean in terms of reducing spend on transfers & salaries in favour of youth development. Given the clamour for signing players everytime someone is made available, I don't know if people would be able to get their heads around it.

Surely the FA have an interest in more clubs moving to a higher category status as this should help the English game and the National side? For clubs that are recommended to move up a category the FA could do everything they could to improve things?

  • 5 months later...

Apparently Frank Sinclair works at Latics' academy...

Having been sacked by Colwyn Bay recently the connection we have with them, considering we've sent a few players on loan there, must be through him

His son plays for the u14s team he has joined in with training sessions a few times when my son was there.i dont think he in employed by us

The under 21s academies have proved many can't step up physically. Bring back the reserve leagues like the old central league where the Busby babes and Fergies fledlings flourished. Its no coincidence to me since the Latics abandoned the reserve team no one from the 18s has played in the first team, the gap is just to large and some would benefit from playing week in week out with senior professionals in a reserves league rather than out on loan.

Many of the lads aren't given long enough when they become pro's. All 4 released within 12 months last season and I'd bet Bove & Truelove will be released by the end of the season. The club needs to form ties with good local conference or Evo-Stik clubs to get the 18 and 19 years olds out on long term loans if reserve football is a thing of the past.

totally agree with this, although footballs a cruel game and this happens far too often - and as footballers reminded about this year on year

I would love it if we invested all our money into developing players of our own which we could sell rather than signing a new set if journeymen every year but I doubt this would be popular among many fans as short term it would lead to a worse product on the pitch and possibly relegation.

I'd think that would be plan B or C if the landlords pick up their ball and take it home, ala Ritchie's side of the late-90s and early 00's
