Kelly and Elokobi?

Recommended Posts

Have Kelly or Elokobi improved yet. also how's James Wilson getting along, showed a lot of early promise (getting attention from Everton) but never quite cut it. Korey Smith is so far my player of the season, consistent and a very classy player. Never loses the ball

Kelly had his best game of the season yesterday. Elokobi is our rock, heart and spiritual leader. James Wilson is absolutely quality - pacy, classy on the ball, calm under pressure. We'll struggle to hold on to him.

The general consensus is that we will struggle to hold on to James Wilson, makes the game look easy although his distribution sometimes is not the best. Kelly is looking more like the player we thought we had signed and seems to be building a good partnership with Jones in the centre midfield.

George is one of the players you just love, wears his heart on his sleeve, leaves nothing out on the pitch and could go on to be a legend here (although it is still early days) another player who we could lose as he only is on a 12 month contract.

Glad Korey is cutting it for you, always looked a better player than some on here gave him credit for. My opinion of course.

Kelly started slowly but is improving all the time.

Elokobi and Wilson are rocks in central defence. Elokobi is bordering on cult hero and Wilson is just classy.

Wilson will no doubt go on to bigger and better things soon... very classy player

Elokobi a unit and rarely puts a foot wrong!

Kelly improved massively from his first few games, think there's more to come aswell

Kelly, in the 3 games I've seen him play has been average at best. I just dont get what he offers. Will very quickly become a boo boy if we lose a few on the bounce.

Wilson wont be here come January if his form keeps up. Better than Tarkowski ever was for us, & we got a decent number for him. Elokobi is the sort of guy Latics fans love. Loads of passion, & does a lot of ugly stuff, but not the best footballer you will ever watch.

Kelly - Started poorly, getting better with every game, but still not doing much that someone else couldn't do,

Wilson - Classy player. No surprise that we don't concede many when he plays

Elokobi - The best player of all time. Passion, heart, a rock. Any player who rugby style "hand offs" others is my type of player. Even when he swings for the ball and misses he throws 100% into it and makes it look entertaining.

Where to start with this....

Kelly has already shown more all round football ability in the last 4 games than Wes showed while here at the same time matching his work rate. Why the hell would he become a boo boy? Did Wes and Smith ever play in a team that vkept 4 clean sheets on the bounce? Did they ever win 3 on the bounce for that matter? Some fans make an quick judgement and that's it, their mind can't and won't be changed.

Wilson has done very well but again he has not done more than Tarky did while here. He has not been here long enough to accomplish that.

Both Kelly and Wilson will hopefully prove to be great signings for us. Time will tell....

Boo boys are all relative with those who need a boo boy.

We had them between 89 and 91 aswell.

I agree with Youngen, still not convinced with Kelly. Yes he's getting better but, to make him captain seems a ludacris decision at this stage. Jones carrying Kelly at this point in time.

4 unbeaten and 1 central midfielder carrying the other.

How? Please explain how Kelly is being carried by anyone?

Of course we did but I love the way nowadays they are selected based of one or two performance or even better what fan on a message board from a previos club thinks of a player.

Rather than one carrying the other, I would say they are starting to compliment one another.

Kelly started off absolutely pap.

I had hopef it was due his bad injury, to a lack of recent football and a lack of match sharpness. If it was that, then fair do's - he'd inprove as his fitness improved. If it wasn't that, i was worried he was actually just pap.

It looks like it was fitness. He's coming good, and looking better with every performance. It's hard to compare individual players to preclvious ones...so i'm not going to here with Kelly.

All i'll say is if anyone is in doubt of his footballing ability, check out O4U video highlights thread; and look at his pass to Winchester in the Bradford game. The boy can play...

Ive seen Kelly against Curzon, Orient & Gills, & he hasnt stood out to me at all. Ive not seen enough of him to make a judgement. Its just in the 3 games Ive seen him, he has been pretty anonymous, whereas Jones has been busy all over & has certainly impressed me more. I just think should times come hard & we lose say 3 on the bounce, Kelly, as captain & a lesser noticed player, would be a prime candidate for taking the flack. Im not saying he already is a boo boy.

And with Wilson, milk turned quicker than Tarkowski, that was his major negative, the rest of his game was pretty impressive. Wilson has the turn of pace, as well as the footballing ability of Tarky. His positioning & reading of the game appears to me to be greater aswell. Saying that I never got the hype around Tarkowski, too many avergae strikers gave him the slip. Which isnt easily said about Wilson.

Wilson's football ability is not in the same league as Tarky's. That's not to say it's vital for a centre back to have the natural comfort on the ball of Tarky, he was far and away above what is necessary - which is what Wilson provides. His game is far steadier than Tarky's, less spectacular tackles but as defensively solid if not more; I'm not a defensive expert but that probably means he is better positionally, and you can tell he's a few years older as his game seems less raw. When Tarky reaches Wilson's current age he'll be Premier League I'd have thought. He's going to be a hell of a player. With Wilson at 25, and with international ambitions I'd be concerned about losing him.

And Kelly gives us a bit of everything. Does nothing as well as Korey Smith's very specialised role last season, but does it all to a decent standard, which is probably similar to Jones. Break up the play higher upfield and move forward with the ball sums them up, I much prefer that midfield balance to what we had last season - break it up in your half and pass sideways - it works with better players than we had. I'd like to see Winchester play alongside them as Brian Wilson doesn't appear to be a natural attacking full back - he's virtually static when he gets forward and that's caused congestion for Winchester several times. Our best playmaker has to have the most space and the most options in the most influential area of the field.

Kelly is improving but for the first 3 or 4 games he was carried, he hardly hit a blue shirt and was turning possession over far to often, thankfully he has settled in well and with games under his belt is looking much better, Wilson on the other hand is a class act reads the game better than any player we have, Elokobi will get all the plaudits but Wilson is the real deal in that back 4.

Elokobi deserves the plaudits because he is organising the defence, and they work very well together.
