Paul Dickov

Recommended Posts

I have seen a lot on here and on other websites that Oldham fans will boo and sing songs aimed at Paul Dickov when we play at Doncaster on Saturday.

We all have our different opinions and I just want to know if you're planning on being one of these people then can I ask what the reason is for doing this?

In my opinion;

1) He wasn't the best manager but far from the worst manager we've had in the recent past

2) He guided us to mid table (usual position) and 2 third round FA Cup ties with Liverpool

3) Gave us a great memory of beating Liverpool at BP

4) Never rude to the supporters, always very approachable at meetings and player of season etc

5) Never lied to the fans

6) Brought in players that we ended up selling on for a fee (Jose Baxter)

7) Responded well to supporters when we played Everton at home

8) Apologised to supporters for not achieving what he wanted to at Oldham when he left

After all of those points, again that's just my opinion, why would you go and give Dickov any stick. His tactics weren't great but blow me he's hardly like Wadsworth, Talbot or Penney is he?

never ever got the Dickov hate, despite his flaws you can always say he put in 100% when he was manager and you could see every defeat hurt him as much as it hurt us, him celebrating the equaliser against everton in the studio just a few weeks after he had been given the sack showed what the club meant to him, absolutely no bitterness shown at all, infact the complete opposite.

Whilst he had his shortcomings as a manager,(and i'll be the first to admit I had wanted him out for a long time before he got the sack) I bare no bad feelings towards him at all, he will get a clap from me.

Furman on the other hand, deserves a reception similar to porter.... For obvious reasons.

Furman got a far better offer than we could make him and he left. Yes, he was our captain and we were fighting relegation at the time but I can't hold that against him.

He was a decent player but nothing special. He would have been mad to turn down a deal that secured his future.

A lot of people expect loyalty from players and managers despite the fact that clubs show them very little loyalty.

Don't get the Furman hatred at all. The judas stuff was/is just people looking for an excuse to hate...?

Some of our fans' comments to Furman on Twitter are moronic and embarrassing. Us, from our lofty perch without a win in the L1 relegation zone, slagging off an international player at a club much higher up the table. Nice one.

Yes, Furman got an offer from a team then on the verge of promotion to the Championship - and he (and his agent) are hardly not going to be interested...

But, ultimately, WE played a big part and made the calculated decision to allow him to go. As Corney explained, he was set to miss games due to the African Cup of Nations anyway and Furman leaving freed up money to get in Korey Smith.

It freed up the funds to help us get players in that helped us survive.

So it was business that, in the end, suited both parties.

Furman may have had his faults - he's a L1 player....! - but he gave his best for the club and represented us professional over a large number of appearances. He was also outstanding at Forest and set-up Simpson's second goal.

So why the need to abuse Furman? Just because some idiots want to abuse. Whatever the reason, it's even more embarrassing when it's completely illogical.

A few seasons ago, my retired father took himself off to an away game down South (Yeovil I think) on his own. He checked himself into a travel lodge somewhere, for the friday night, and popped into the pub for some grub. There was Mr Dickov and his entire coaching staff (before they got taken off him) talking tactics over a drink before bedtime. The players were already tucked up in bed.

My dad said hello and introduced himself as a Latics fan. Paul bought him a pint and invited him to sit with them.

Not wanting to get in the way, my Dad had a quick drink with them then sat at a different table to order food. When he eventually left the pub he found that his food bill had been paid.

Top bloke.

Dickov is a top bloke. Unfortunately, he's not a very good manager.

But he got us to the 5th round of the FA Cup which has been the best thing about supporting Latics in :censored:ing ages.

Dickov and Johnson are clones created by a coaching system that suppresses all individuality from initially vibrant, hungry and innovative young managers. The system produces managers and coaches prepared to coach the best of the best. When they arrive in the toilet that is league one or two - then suddenly the smart keep ball and rigid systems they are taught are :censored:ing useless as the players they are landed with usually are too.

The system works for your AVBs, Mourinhos, and Rodgers and to a lesser extent those with massive budgets in the FL like your Howes. Dickov and Johnson most likely will not be football managers in 2 years time. The only way for either or both to succeed is to go with instinct not the manual. Sadly it's this uniformity across the coaching spectrum that has given us the sterile product we have seen over the last 5 years. Chelsea play in exactly the way we are playing under Johnson, i.e. keep ball and look for the opening - the key differences is their players keep the ball, create an opening and have excellent movement off the ball. Players in League One don't.

As for booing Dickov no, the time was right for him to go and I did predict he'd take Donny down same as I feel they will be nowhere near the top 6 this season as he just doesn't have it.

As for Johnson, sadly I think we'll be looking for a new manager by the turn of the year.....

So sure are you?

£50 to Kershaws if Johnson is our manager come May 1st 2016?

You donate £50 if he leaves before?

He'd be our first manager to complete three years in post since Andy Ritchie in May 2001....

Dickov? He came, he tried, he failed.

He did so with hard work and commitment. He just wasn't good enough to turn the average into the special on a Latics playing budget. He's not the first. He won't be the last.

No chance he should be booed. A five second ripple of applause for his effort and then let's forget he's even there.
