Latics Away Days by Train (and WebShop)

Recommended Posts

A thread to allow posters to discuss best routes / fares for train travel to away games and also to give me another opportunity to plug PlayerShare WebShop which contributes decent amounts to the PlayerShare scheme that funded the George Elokobi signing.

Here's the link to PlayerShare WebShop:

My suggested retailer of any train ticket at the time of posting is Virgin because they don't charge card fees, pay 1% to PlayerShare and also let's you get Nectar points too. They sell tickets for non-Virgin routes. There are other train ticket retailers available via the link above, including a The Trainline who pay more commission.

(If there are between 3 and 9 adults travelling together on a Virgin service go to the WebShop link above > Virgin Trains > Special Offers > Group Discounts and you may, sometimes, be able to get 20% off the fare for everybody)

Bite Card is free gets you between 10%-20% off at many mainline station concessions including bars at Euston / Waterloo, Burger King, Delice de France and lots more.

Railcards that give certain passengers a third of the fare. Family, disabled, student and couple (can be mates!) can benefit from these. Look out for discounts off the usual fee for a railcard too.

20th September: Notts County away.

At this stage it looks like a £22.30 super off-peak return is the best adult dare from Manchester to Nottingham and it has a degree of flexibility. There are also £22.60 off peak day return fares from Rochdale, although these trains will need you to change more than once.

4th October: Peterborough away.

£45.50 is the cheapest way I can see from Manchester, buying two standard singles. Starting at Rochdale it can be done for £34 and it's also £34 from Rochdale to Peterborough and then returning to Manchester in the evening. Most times of train will need at least one change of service en route.

Prices mentioned above will usually increase the closer you get to the travel date.

18th October: Chesterfield away

I've not checked where the station is in relation to the new ground, but £16 is the cheapest Manchester option I can see using two standard singles (£14 for a late return) or £25.70 using an off-peak return from Rochdale.

Some changes to off peak from tomorrow in North West restricting travel at certain times. Think its something like cant travel 4.10-6.35 (NOT SURE OF TIMES) have to get anytime ticket that is more expensive or pay an excess fare. But thought it might impact someone after a game changing in Mcr or coming to a night match.

Prices likely to all change tomorrow re best fair calcs?

have used trainline and dated them so prices are valid fare increases will have been factored in

It might be cheaper if you spilt your ticket at Sheffield. So get Manchester to Sheffield and then Sheffield to Notts returns.

A few years back we booked singles to Nottingham then a return to Peterborough save a few quid.

Just continuing to look at the Peterborough match, I've found the following for the return journey:

Peterborough to Nottingham - £8 (1725 - 1833)

Nottingham to Manchester - £6 (1939 - 2132)

£14 isn't bad for one way, however I'm struggling to find a cheapish outbound journey to compliment it.
