We obviously don't have a 20 goal a season striker and with our budget are (Ebanks Blake aside) unlikely to get one. Even the great Joe Royle sides never really had one.

The only way this team is going anywhere is if the midfield and defenders step up and all contribute a share. Todate Forte has 5 and the rest 4 between them.

Get in the box and shoot..............

Or simply stick extra forwards on when teams like Gillingham and County want to park the bus, its not rocket science, take of a defender or even one of the two holding midfielders and we may have more to offer, although draws keep the run going are no use when its 3 points for a win, we are far too safe and although we have lost 2 games less than Rochdale we are 2 points behind them after only 9 games played, have a go at teams and we might even get a few more on the gate.

At the moment its about bodies in the box for me.

With who we have a 20 goal striker isnt there, but too often when we go forward there are only 1 or 2 men in the box - (Sometimes even nobody).

Get bodies in there and gamble.

^ This for me.

Shots and crosses. We always have too few. Too many times we play like we're pretending to be a Premiership team. Trying intricate triangles, short passes which ultimate don't have any penetration and frustrate the crowd.

Chuck in a scuffed cross bouncing across the area and defenders at this level just struggle to deal with them properly.

me 2. Not enough bodies in the box and not enough movement and we don't cross the ball early enough. Winchester for all his plaudits this season never tries to get the ball in probably because he knows we don't have the bodies in the box. Against Gillingham Dayton put in 3 great crosses but no one attacked them.

We don't really have an out and out forward me. Forte and Poleon always try to much in the box neither just takes a touch and shot away or belts one first time.

But its nice to be talking about how solid we are and if we can find another 10% this team could do something.

You get the ball into a good area and flood the box. Putting the ball in the box from wide and 40 yards from goal, is very easy to defend. Balls accross the box cause problems at any level.

Mix it up. Play the triangles, but if we are putting it in the box - get shots in, get bodies in the box and put it in from a good area.

Totally agree. far too cautious, especially at home. Bodies in the box! That's what we need.

Forte does his job in coming in when the play is on the other side but is a bit hampered by being so one footed. I can't really see Winchester tapping many crosses in at the far post. Sounds like we need DP on the end of moves, more runs from the middle 2 and Mills over-lapping to free Forte up to go central

It very noticeable that when you see old clips of Latics scoring from the JR era there is always bodies in the box , 4 , 5 or even more everytime a cross comes in.

Only way a team like Latics will score goals without a 20+ striker in the side.

Our home form over the past 5 or 6 years has driven me mad especially when great crosses come in and we have one player in the box !!

LJ has always said he looks for box to box players , where are they because our midfield are only just crossing the halfway line when the cross comes in ?

We've been shot shy for ages.

It's weird though, we have had plenty of players capable of hitting it from distance, but rarely has it happened.

Korey Smith was a huge culprit last season, the 2 he let fly with, both from well outside the area, flew in and he scored with them. But, then; more often that not, he would look for a pass rather than take it on. So frustrating, as he showed he could do it; but chose not too.

Jones, Kelly, Winchester and Philliskirk all are capable of hitting decent shots it looks to me, let alone the others 'having a go' - but we rarely seem to?

strange.

The daisycutter seems to have all but disappeared from today's game, also the up and under which caused panic to defences, anyone remembering full back Bob Ledger will know his speciality was crossing from deep with snow coming down on the ball.

Were these something a player did off his own bat, or were they old coaching techniques - now long forgotten?.. I'm not sure.

Over coaching teams with their silly overpriced nonsensical coaching badges. Because Barca tipp tappy teams to death, new coaches think they do that with League One teams. Keep the ball by all means but you might as well give it straight back to the opposition if there's zero end product.

Two wingers, two dogged midfielders and strikers who attack the ball - simples, and an odd runner from midfield would help. And would it kill us to allow our fullbacks to overlap?

Defensively we have cracked it but we're not working opposition goalkeepers enough at all, and haven't done for a while. The only game where we've peppered a keeper this season and extended him was at Donny but the shackles were off at 2-0 up. Bywater was busy for the Gills but as my Grandad God Bless him, used to say 'he threw his cap' on most of them....

Still only 1 goal or less in every competitive game for us at BP since 25 January

7 league matches now since a goal from open play.

There is so much congestion with our full backs whenever they advance. Brian Wilson in particular has a habit of running towards Winchester, standing still, then retreating again - having clogged up the area our best playmaker occupies. Our last goal from open play came when Winchester assisted having had space in the middle of the park to pick a pass. He should be moved there. I'd move Poleon onto the flank, where he seems to spend most time as our lone striker, and then bring in a centre forward that can lay it into the path for Forte, Winchester, Poleon and the runner from centre midfield, or get on the end of the chances they'll create. The sooner we bring in this proven striker the manager says he's working on, the sooner we'll get goals.

There were more daisycutters back in the day because the ball was so heavy it was difficult to actually get it off the ground while panicking about the up and under may have had much to down with defenders thinking about having to head the thing.

Good fun though Dave.

I still have an imprint on my right ankle from one of the aforementioned daisy cutters where I stupidly got in the way of one of my dad's shots playing Wally.

I also still have chapel road cinder shrapnel in my left knee and on a really cold day, you can just make out the word MITRE in reverse on my left thigh.
