The English National Side

In the wake of all the corruption shenanigans going on at FIFA and the suspicion cast over the FA I was thinking.... I can do without the national side, it just messes up the weekend and spoils a good tournament every couple of years!!

I tend to be washing my hair when England play these days, don't know why but it's the false expectations that we will achieve something yet we haven't since 1966 and don't think we will in my life time. Need to look at grass roots re evaluate like the Germans did when they couldn't stand to lose one trophy.

 

Impact of foreign players on our games? I look at the premiership and it's spot the English player.

 

And yes, it has rightly ballsed up my weekend shifting to 1pm...no consideration at all..tut...damn FA ..

I still watch them at every opportunity. I don't dislike watching them either though it can be a chore at times. I understand those that are pissed off with the whole setup though.

 

I never get carried away at tournaments either as I'm just happy to see how far we go. I don't know where the expectation that we expect to do well at them comes from. I don't think I've met a person in the past 8 years who thinks the England team is any good or going to do well. It just seems to be the media that push it and then use it as an excuse when we go out!

Most of the players are a bunch of pricks.

 

I just can't invest my emotion in these overpaid, prima donnas like I could with players from the 90s and before.

 

And they can't play football for :censored:e, they're a group of talented individuals, they're not a talented team.

 

So without the emotional attachment and a complete lack of entertainment factor all that's left to feel is apathy.

 

I just don't give a :censored: either way, anymore.

The FA are a joke in many ways and in my opinion whilst the actions of the bid team were clearly not as suspect as some of the other bid teams it doesn't change the fact that they acted abhorrently.

 

The English talent available for selection is currently the weakest I can remember by some distance and the structure of football in this country is such that I can't see that changing any time soon.

 

These are facts that change nothing about the fact that I am English and care passionately about our national team. I know that the odds of seeing us win something are somewhere between slim and zero but so what. Football isn't and never has been about supporting a team because they are successful.

 

England need the fans to get behind them now more than ever but it seems that many have given up.

 

There is no football experience to match following your country (particularly away) in my opinion.

 

I treat club and country the same. I wouldn't give up on Latics if we got relegated and I wouldn't give up on England if they fail to qualify for tournaments.

 

There are a number of England players that I have little time for but there have been plenty of Oldham players where I've felt the same. When you pull in the shirt all is forgiven for 90 minutes and you support them to 100%.

 

I know these views aren't popular at the moment but next Tuesday when I am at Celtic Park with 4,500 other England supporters belting out the national anthem I will get to experience something special.

 

If we can somehow turn it round and progress at the next World Cup or the one after that it will mean so much because of sticking with them through the lean times in the same way that the victory over Liverpool meant so much more to those of us that have seen much of the :censored: Latics have served up in recent history than to those who just turned up for the 'big game'.

Each to their own I suppose but don't get the negativity towards the national side at all. International matches are a nice distraction from club football and despite what many believe, on a global scale England are still pretty damn good (and make no mistake football is a truly global game). There are plenty of nations envious of our position. As long as you don't take it too seriously there is nothing to lose. Anyway international football like any other is more fun when you have a team to support.

Well said that man and I hope you have a cracker, I dont understand how fans of lower league clubs can not watching England for no other reason than "they are :censored:, they never win out" hello how long have we watch Latics non achieving for? You don't follow a team for it to win you follow a team because it's a part of you and you in turn are a part of it (maybe less so nowadays for some clubs). There have been about 300 tickets returned I believe. The FA announced last week that all England fans have to collect their tickets in Glasgow on Tuesday. A number are saying that they can't be bothered with the hassle but on the whole I imagine the returned tickets had been sold on to non-members who will not now be able to get them.

 

The England Travel Club makes it very difficult to get hold of tickets unless you go on a regular basis. There is a high membership fee and excessive police checks just to be accepted as a member. Ever since the abandoned game in Dublin The FA have opted to disrupt all fans in order to prevent those travelling that they suspect will cause trouble.

 

It is a shame that we are down to only taking under 5k to Glasgow. It's not that long ago that we took significantly more than that to Copenhagen and over double that to a friendly in Geneva against the Argies.

I think I'm somewhere in the middle of the two diametrically opposed opinions on offer so far.

 

I only really bother with the tournaments, and that's been the case for as long as I've been watching football. Couldn't give a :censored: who plays for them. I'm not a nationalist and wouldn't go out of my way to attend an England game, but equally if I am watching a competitive fixture I'll cheer if we score.

I'm not usually all that fussed - qualification is dreary for the most part but I always get overly optimistic and excited for the big tournaments.

 

That said, I am going tomorrow as Wembley's only a couple of miles down the road and I've friends down from home who wanted to go too. I'm not expecting much but for £50 I can't really complain about seeing some great players at such an amazing stadium.

I can't remember the last time I watched an England game and didn't struggle not to nod off. They bore the arse off me.

 

I move heaven and earth to make sure I don't miss Latics, using up my leave, swapping shifts and days off etc etc. I just can't summons that amount of enthusiasm for the national team any more. They're as dull as watching the X Factor with the wife and kids.

Seem to vaguely remember beating the Germans 1-0 in a euro finals game with a Shearer goal...France 2000?? Certainly can't remember beating any other major country away in a tournament though. Depressing when you think about it like that.
