Memorable derbies

City and United late 80's, early 90's stick out most for me.

They'd always bring huge followings here as would we to them.

United especially, I HATED them back then. - really, really hated them .

When we beat them 1-0 that time I was at Oldham College and, as ever, there were more reds than us in most classes. Absolutely :censored:ing magical. They all conformed to the stereotype of never giving any credit to the opposition.

Scoring twice first half & Giggs being taken off at half time after being in Craig Fleming's pocket was top drawer, despite what went on the happen.

I remember the away games at Maine Rd moreso than those at Boundary Park - we seemed to beat them every time and the atmosphere in and around the ground was always intimidating.

How many did we take to Old Trafford the first year we went up? Was it 5 or 6 thousand? I remember what seemed like a big away following out singing them.

Leeds always seemed to bring loads in the first few years I started watching us - 87 onwards, as did Bradford & Blackburn. Always electric atmospheres.

What were the Preston and Burnley games like mid to late 90's? I was living in Bristol back then & missed most of that time..

Bolton & Blackpool seemed to be lively affairs in the 70's and 80's from what I've read....?

not sure if it's the game you're referring to, but we played United in the Rumbelows Cup at OT the first year we were in the top flight, that was the night we had 9K there, they gave us the whole of what used to be the K stand. I'll never forgive David Currie for :censored:ting out of that header against Schmeichel when he should have scored

Liked the Leeds 2-2 draw when we scored two in injury time to snatch an unlikely draw. They ripped up seats in the RRE in frustration.

The 6-3 defeat to Man Utd on Boxing Day goes down as a classic derby match for me despite the end result. 2 down early doors but dramatically got to level terms at HT - really enjoyed the rum laced coffee and mince pies my Dad sneaked in.

In the end we lost but 9 goals on Boxing day and (I think) the only team to put 3 past the eventual champions all season.

Being pelted by united with coins in the first year we went up from the K Stand. I really liked when we beat City away 1.3 with a Palmer hatrick, yard dogs!!!....Stockport away is also up there with a magical Eyres's free kick

The 2-1 away win in League One against Joe Royles City was a good derby day as well.

The 3-3 draw away at City in the inaugural Premier League season (all the money in the world for the "all new ball game" and we couldn't get a shirt sponsor) after David White ripping us apart early doors.

We Beat City 4-1 Palmer Hat Trick and Miligan got the other (its on youtube)

The Yard Dogs name came the season before. Another win 2-1 - Tommy Wright scoring both.

Jummy Frizzel on the radio on the way home called us a bunch of yard dogs snapping at players heels. I dont think it was meant as a compiment ;)

Used to love going to Maine Rd, 9 times out of 10 we seemed to get something from a game

Bolton and preston were huge games in the 70/80 and akin to open warfare can remember 22,000 for a visit of Bolton and the fights surging back and forth across the back of the chaddy Burnley could get a bit livley as well on and off the field

Pretty amazed by that Burnley video. They must've brought near 5000. Never would've thought they'd have such a big away following, and clearly a decent rivalry against us. Was that rivalry similar to games against Blackburn and Bolton? And did we used to take big followings to their grounds?

As for the last few years, Tranmere fizzled out a bit, Huddersfield went up, Bury went down and we haven't been able to play any Lancashire clubs other than Preston - who have been on Tuesday nights, and this season during a really poor run of form - for the last 10 years. It's been a Yorkshire affair for a while now, as their teams seem to be magnetised to this league.

It'll be good to have more of a derby kind of atmosphere at least against Rochdale, even if some of us don't mind them.

Remember that game so well - was the first time I'd seen such a massive away crowd. I think the primary reason for their ridiculous support in that particular match was because it was a re-arranged fixture from around Christmas 97 which was postponed, and it turned out be an absolutely massive fixture for the Dingles, as it was 2nd to last day of the season and their game in hand in a crucial relegation battle.

If memory serves correctly, we so very nearly sent them down, as they were 3-1 up at HT and we came back to 3-3 (despite having 10 men as Garnett was sent off early second half) meaning they had to go into the last day fixture having to win to have any chance of surviving.

They always bought amazing support around that time though, around 3,500. Preston did too.

Absolute storm that night - lightning, thunder and lashing down with rain as well I recall.

Oh yeah! Also, it was the first time in that blue Slumberland kit, and Bruce Grobbelaar was in goal for Latics - He actually kept 3 clean sheets in 4 for us at the end of that season!

Remember Bruce on his debut showing off in front of the Chaddy during the warmup.

Used his hands to indicate the intersection of the post and crossbar. Then took 3 penalties that all banged off the woodwork in that spot. Impressive. He'd have scored a penalty on Tuesday....
