Barnsley: Directions, Beer & Food

Recommended Posts

NOTE: This information may be out of date in an ever-changing world.

Barnsley FC, Oakwell Stadium, Grove Street, Barnsley, South Yorkshire S71 1ET

Away fans are asked to use postcode for SatNav: S71 1AN

Away supporters are accommodated in the Palmer Construction North Stand which holds 6,238. This is shared with home supporters, and the amount of seats given to away supporters varies according to demand, normally up to 2,000.

Apparently the gents’ toilets haven’t been improved since Latics last visited, and it’s still simply an open-air wall to urinate on – you are advised to take time to judge the wind movement to avoid blow-back!

NOTE: Alcohol is only available in the away end when the whole stand is allocated to away fans. Unfortunately if the stand is split between home and away supporters, then the only bar on the concourse is situated on the home side.

Disabled fans’ facilities:

There is a purpose built stand for disabled supporters - a three-floor structure in the corner between the East & South Stands.

How to get there:

By Car:

From the North: Follow the southbound A1/A1(M). After passing junction 45 (A64 Leeds/York), follow signage for the M1. Join the M1 at junction 48, exiting at junction 37. Turn left onto the A628, following signage for Barnsley FC. The ground is visible on the right after about 2 miles.

From the South: Exit the M1 at junction 36, onto the A61. At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit, continuing on the A61 towards Barnsley (South). At the next roundabout, take the 1st exit, continuing on the A61 for a further 3 miles. A right turn into Bank End Road and a slight right at Grove Street will lead to the stadium, situated on the left.

Car Parking:

There are two car parks at the ground, but they are mainly for permit holders only. In between the ground and the Metrodome Leisure Centre there is a car park for visiting supporters, called Queens Ground. Exit from the car park will be via the bottom two gates onto Pontefract Road and Grove Street. You can park at the Metrodome, but it can be slow to get out after the game. Otherwise it’s street parking.

By Train

Barnsley railway station is a five to ten minute walk from the stadium, and is served by trains running between Sheffield and Leeds.

From the train station turn right towards the traffic light, then turn left and walk towards the flyover. Go under the bridge and turn left up Grove Street. The ground is at the bottom of the hill.

NOTE: It is advisable to keep colours covered especially around the town centre.

Where to drink:

NOTE: Drinking in the town centre is generally not recommended, especially near the Bus & Train Stations.

The Dove Inn on Doncaster Road, listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide, is an outlet for the Old Mill Brewery. It is only a five minute walk away from the ground down Oakwell Lane and is frequented by both home and away fans.

About a ten minute walk from the ground, further along Doncaster Road (on the right after the Primary School on the left) is the Barnsley East Dene Working Men’s Club, which admits visiting supporters (including accompanied children) without entry charge. You can also leave your car there at a cost of £1.50.
A few minutes’ walk from the away end is the Metrodome Leisure Centre, which has a bar inside serving good food and ale.

The Holleywell on Oakwell Road and The Outpost on Sheffield Road are said to offer a friendly atmosphere.

Where to eat:

If you are following the A61 & 'Stadium/Metrodome', you travel along a dual-carriageway to a roundabout and back up the other side of the dual-carriageway. There is a McDonald’s located on the roundabout, about a mile from the ground.

Presumably any under 16s will be able to buy the Concessions tickets at Barnsley, although these would be £6 more expensive for the over 12s and £11 more expensive for the under 12s.

Was looking forward to this one but it's being given a miss on the back of Saturday. Poor result on Boxing Day and we'll do well to take 500.

The club appear to have realised on the back of our 7-0 defeat that we might not now sell out the 6000 capacity of the stand after all and have made it pay on the day.

Less than 500 is pretty bad for a Yorkshire away, Christmas time or not. We're still fully in the race for the play offs despite recent results. I'm not looking forward to how eerie such an empty away end will feel like during a night game.

In a bizarre twist we'll beat Crewe, others will lose, we'll be 5th and take the standard 1000+ to this......

Why is this game being played on a Monday night when most others are being played on a Sunday afternoon?

It's because the league know I have my tonsils plumbed into the J W Lees hand pump at my local on a Sunday afternoon and the crowd would be down!

Surely you know 3 pints is binge drinking!! :drinking45::drinking45::drinking45: .

Also I will now be able to attend Oakwell on Monday night and enjoy the 3 points back on the A635!! :OASISscarf: . (points, pints - who's counting?).

My money is on South Yorkshire police

Remember South Yorkshire police switching our game with Sheff Weds to a Tuesday night from a bank holiday Monday one year before Sky picked it for TV and switched it back.

Could be right, although if they had Sheffield United v Scunthorpe in in mind, they may have a rest day as its in doubt due to snow.

Ironically, the Barnsley v Latics fixture should be ok and it's forecast to ease by Monday night.
