Another away allocation sold out - best away support in the land?

Pound for pound we've got to have the best away support in English football, haven't we?

These tables that are produced showing away support as a percentage of home support are usually skewed for one reason or another, eg Coventry having home games at Sixfields.

Or the odd club like Port Vale will sneak in now and again during a promotion season by taking 6000 to Bury but we're up there year in, year out, through thick or thin (mainly thin).

Why do so many of us regularly go away when fans of clubs with similar home gates, like Rochdale, don't?

It's always been the case since I've supported us. Was it the same back in the 70's and further back???

IMO An away day is a day out for most people Boundary Park isn't a good enough day out present. Make it a better day out and we would get more at home watching this team at these prices in a far better stadium would probably double the attendances

This is a thread designed for being positive about our away support rather than negative about our home support :redcard:

one thing i will say, is what we lack in numbers we make up for in noise... not once have we beem criticised for not bringing an atmosphere!

speaking to opposing fans and all they ever seem to have for us is praise, unless we've battered them on and off the pitch - then they turn bitter

Bury and Dale usually come pretty near to the top of those % of home support tables but neither travel half as well as we do to local games. In comparison to clubs of a similar size to Latics, away support is pretty high on the chart. Although Port Vale have always struck me as having a good away following, as do Mansfield. Carlisle for distance travelled and Luton are another that take a load everywhere.

Can't compare our away support to teams like Leeds and Middlesbrough though who sell out away ends most weeks. I'd say them two plus Luton have the best followings in the football league all things considered.

Or on the contrary our strong away support proves that we have a bigger potential support than we realise which is a good thing.

Build it and they will come.

Away supporter numbers is something that has been mulling over from some time, this thread prompted me.I have started a petition to get the FA, FL etc to publicise officially attendances in the format 10,000,(999) or simlar -see the petition. I have asked in the petition for media outets to do the same.

I'd be grateful if you could sign it.

And share!

Thanks

Could I ask if this link works?, as on my PC it goes to my dashboard and is hard to see it as anyone else would

Thanks

With their close proximity to BP (especially Rochdale) I've been massively disappointed with the followings both Dale and Bury have brought with them. Dale bringing 1200 or so just after they'd been promoted was piss poor, there should have been 1000 more in he same way we took (numbers wise) our entire home support to Spotland a few weeks ago.

But the worst ever support was that time Bury brought about 300 for a night game, that was truly shocking! I think it was the same season they had to give us an overspill in their main stand because the away end was full. That was also a night game so you can make a direct comparison

The only disappointing thing about all this fantastic away support is that Latics don't get a penny of any of it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here I go again harking back to the good old days, but back then in the football league away clubs used to receive half the home gate receipts, not sure when that was abolished though?

I hear FC United give the away team ALL the gate receipts and pay the away teams players wages that week - is this true rummeh?

Think that was the year we were in the play-offs under Dowie and Bury got relegated.

Bury's fans had a fall out with the club over away membership or some other similar restriction too. So a lot boycotted their away games.

There is one major flaw in using away fan % of home gate as a marker of away support is that the sample size means you can get a skewed percentage towards those smaller clubs.

Our away support is fantastic though and thanks to OASIS we often get very good gates at away games down South, especially the mid-week ones. There might be something in that due to when we were really good and the disposable income of fans who started supporting us in the late 80s early 90s too, and how common it is for those fans of that age group to live away from where they grew up.

It doesn't stop there, their players lend the away team their FFerrari sand supermodel WAGS to go for a bit of fingers and tops after the game.

It was in the mid 80s when the great Manure got fed up with teams coming to OT and walking away with a nice fat cheque from the gate receipts.

They pushed a motion through to stop it and for teams to keep their own gate money , it was the start of the GREED.

The big clubs just got greedier and the rest is history !!!
