Pre Build Up of Oldham Athletic vs Preston NE (28/02/15)

Recommended Posts

Struggling to come to terms with the fact that we have lost to two of the bottom 5 within the space of a week, both performances being disgraceful and LJ still comes out with the same tripe supporting them. Its not on! Well, now is a test as to our agility to bounce back against one of the divisions best - a highly likely promotion contender. If the whole philosophy doesn't change this week, with mistakes not learnt in preparation, we are going to get trounced!

Preston have some quality in their team, with: Huntington, Humphrey, Johnson, Gallagher, Gallagher, Welsh, Garner and Robinson (starting vs Scunthorpe) and Ebanks-Blake, K.Davies, Kilkenny coming off the bench. So our lads are going to have to pull of some performance!

I would drop B.Wilson and Philiskirk, with Elokobi sounding like he will be out with a bad calf.

Starting XI

Kean

Brown, J. Wilson, Dieng/Kusunga, Mills

Jones, Kelly

Winchester, Mellis, Forte

Poleon

Coleman, Kusunga/Dieng, B. Wilson, Philiskirk, Murphy, Turner

Its a winnable game, a win would set us up nicely and bring in a world of confidence into the following games of Port Vale and Yeovil away (two bogey teams no doubt)

OWTB

LEE JOHNSONS BARMY ARMY*

Back to basics and being hard to beat is the route we should take IMO, not just for this game but leading up to the end of the season. LJ's criticism of the team yesterday was a soft underbelly. The solution for this has to be Adam Lockwood.

For next week I'm going to assume that Jones will be healthy again and the injured players are still injured (Mills, Elokobi, Wilkinson etc.) and this would be my team:

Kean

Kusunga

Lockwood

J Wilson

Brown

Kelly

Winchester

Mellis

Jones

Forte

Poleon

If Mills is fit then there's a good argument to put him in instead of Brown, although Brown should be considered in either full back position because he works well in that system.

There's a lot of similarities to the effective team at the end of last season. The whole back four has a defence-first mindset and the Lockwood/Wilson partnership is one that I would trust, Kelly could certainly play the protecting role as well as Smith. Jones for Wesolowski is an upgrade. Winchester has enough defensive understanding to do Worrall's role yet still offer more going forward, Forte isn't the same type of player as Harkins but his pace and cutting inside from the left could be a great outlet for the team. Same with Poleon, who I think could thrive from playing that role as he is forced to work hard for the team rather than being given the chance to overplay and be wasteful, similar to JCH. Murphy could then be the ideal player to bring off the bench for the time being and if he earns his place in the team then great. Also the midfield four all have it in them to support the front man while still doing their defensive duties.

It will probably be frustrating for a few games but it's a system that is likely to make us consistent, which is what every team in this league below 5th is missing. In the short term it would be a great way to nullify Preston's threats while looking to hit them on the break with pace.

It's easy this management lark!

If Brown doesn't get a start next week there's something amiss regardless of whether Mills is injured. B Wilson was abysmal and in the second half Brown was lively and involved. I'd have thought Murphy did enough to be above Poleon in the pecking order while Kusunga looked composed enough to be next in line if Elokobi is out

At the moment i can't see anything but an absolute pasting by preston on saturday - with their squad - power and pace and our narrow 'diamond' running down blind alleys formation i can see pass pass hoooof (repeat for 90mins)

Our saving grace would be wilkinson being available - at least the ball would stick up top to get people around him

As bad has Brian Wilson has been, and as much as I think Brown has been hard done by, I'd still start him against Preston.

He was excellent against Swindon and defends well when we're under the cosh.

He doesn't offer much going forward but probably best for him not to try to against a PNE side that should be having a go at us.

I'd rotate him and Brown from hereon in though with Brown to start against lesser opposition where his pace and enthusiasm might help us find a way through.

Even though I don't like Wilson I think he is better at the one on one tackles but he is easily done for pace and gets caught out coming in field

I seem to recall people saying similar words when we signed this Bury reject from Guiseley!!!

Different context though. I think Lockwood is excellent, but he did look slow and out of shape when he arrived and I expect he'll need to ease himself back as and when the time comes. The suggestion above in the thread was that he should be thrown in because Davies is a threat when it would appear to me obvious that if that's the case you don't want to chuck in someone who hasn't had any match time since May.

I can't say it gives me the :censored:s. Before Saturday we'd conceded four goals in five matches. Although the team were pretty :censored: as a whole against Colchester, aside from everyone dozing when the ball came back into the mixer in the second minute we didn't look in much danger then either.

Wilson was hopelessly out of position causing the first two goals on Saturday. Brown should certainly be brought in for him but no, I don't see the need to bring back someone with no game time against one of the best attacking teams in the league.
