Just looking at the transfer fees recieved for that team we had late 80's early 90's. I know we brought a few players in but where did all that cash go?

Halle 500k

Marshall 750k

Milligan 1m

Milligan 800k

Henry 500k

Holden 900k

Irwin 650k

Barrett 1.7m

Warhurst 750k

Adams 250k

Total £7.8m

We only got £250K for Halle and £625K for Irwin IIRC, also I don't think we got £500K for Henry.

Barrett - The new stand at the Rochdale Road End was paid for from the £1.7M

Holden - We got Pointon and Redmond in return (the fee was actually £1.2M I think and we paid £600K each for those two)

We did also buy Brennan, McDonald, Beckford, Olney (for a club record £750K), Tolson (the most expensive teenager in the country at the time) and a good few others. I always felt Joe was a better bargain basement shopper rather than when he had a few quid to spend as well.

It's a pity Prozac's not around on here still, he's the man with the memory for this sort of stuff

I saw Tolson score his only goal for Latics, in a pre-season friendly at Minehead.

How could you forget Brian Kilcline?

Here's some ins and outs (some fees are probably guesswork)

Yeah, he bought some absolute :censored:e did Royle. Like someone else said, his greatest talent was being able to spot an uncut diamond in the roughage of Leeds United / Citeh / Man United's reserves.

Anyone seen Rick Holden's FB feed this week? Some fantastic stories coming out. It's like he's in the pub all week getting pissed and responding to any Latics fan.

We made £800k profit they year we got relegated from the Prem, that doesn't include the £800k we got for Gerrard.

JW Lees and Ian Stott will have pocketed an decent % of that; the same for most of the transfers already mentioned.

We did have to spend a decent sum on ground improvements that the likes of Brentford didn't have to. In fact with the exception of Swindon, Sheff U, Barnsley and possibly Bristol City I doubt many of our current League 1 contempories had to spend much on ground redevelopments back then. As Ghost of Cecere said we spent Earl Barrett's fee on the RRE and that is not exactly in tip-top condition nowadays.

Among the classic bits of Rick Holden's output this week is the bit where he puts winning OASIS Player of the Year on a par with winning the Second Division.

I l know, outrageous. Fancy thinking so little of the OASIS accolade. Holden out. Edited by singe

It was Norman Holden I think.

It was Norman Holden, he had agreed to fund the transfer of David Batty from Leeds but some old farts on the board said it wasnt right that he would get a share of the profits if we sold him on! He also funded Mickey Quinn and Neil Adams transfers.

Good bloke Norman, also put money in at Sheddings and Oldham Cricket, both did well out of his funding too.

  • 2 months later...

How much would

they be worth today? £78 million? Irwin alone would be £20 million+.

If Luke Shaw's worth £30 million, Irwin would have been worth at least £50m today.

In fact, if Luke Shaw's worth £30m, I reckon I must be worth at least £1m.

I can quote him from the letter he sent to us when he won the award:

"Yours lurking in the North waiting for the assault"

Made the presentation at Molyneux which seems a bit odd with the benefit of hindsight!
