Burton-on-Trent: Directions, Beer & Food

Since Latics last played the Brewers, they have moved to a new £6.5m purpose-built stadium, located just across the roundabout from the old Eton Park ground. All the stands are covered, but only the Main Stand is seated with space for 400 away fans. The bulk of the away fans, just over 1400, are housed on the shallow, covered Coors East Stand Terrace behind the goal.

There is a bar for away fans, with TV screens showing Sky Sports News and then live coverage of the match itself. The bar is open until 15 minutes after the second half has started.

 

 

Disabled persons’ facilities:

There are 70 spaces reserved for disabled supporters and the whole ground is wheelchair accessible. Disabled supporters are admitted to the ground free of charge with the carer paying full price. There are disabled parking spaces.

 

Disabled supporters are advised to contact the club in advance to ensure that specific arrangements are in place to meet their needs. The club will also advise of the best entrance to the ground.

 

How to get there:

 

By Road:

 

From Oldham via the scenic route through the Peak District:

From my experience of up to 60 trips per year over the last 40 years, this is the best route rather than risk delays and boredom on the M6. It's great scenery, 20 miles shorter, only taking about 10 minutes longer, and minimises the risk of hold-ups, like the ones experienced by supporters trying to get to Coventry on 14^th April:

M60 to Junction 24 Denton Island. M67 to Mottram. A57 to Glossop (NOTE: This road is extremely busy at peak periods – alternative route missing Glossop is via Mottram, Broadbottom, Charlesworth and over the moor before turning right onto A624). A624 Hayfield - Chapel-en-le-Frith. A6 Buxton. A53 signposted Ashbourne. A515 Ashbourne signposted Lichfield. A50 dual carriageway. A511. At traffic lights by Sunar Gow restaurant turn right on A511. At roundabout take first exit. At second roundabout take second exit. At third roundabout take second exit. Shortly after passing the Coach House pub (see below) on the left, at fourth roundabout take the 1st exit onto the A5121. At next roundabout take the 1st exit onto Princess Way for Stadium. Approx 76 miles = 1 Hour 55 minutes.

 

 

From the West (M6):

Exit M6 at Junction 15 and follow A50 towards Stoke and Uttoxeter. Exit A50 onto A511. At traffic lights turn right by Sunar Gow restaurant on A511. Then follow above directions

 

From the North (M1):

Leave the M1 at junction 28 and join the A38 towards Derby. Continue on the A38 through Derby towards Burton. Leave the A38 at the Burton North exit and follow the A5121 towards Burton. Go straight across a roundabout and you will then pass a McDonald’s and a Lookers used car site on your right. Just before the next roundabout you will see the stadium on your right. Turn right at the roundabout into Princess Way. A short distance along Princess Way, on the right is the entrance to the Club Car Park.

 

From the South (M1):

EITHER Leave the M1, exit at Junction 22 (signposted Coalville, Ashby, Burton) and stay on the A511 You stay on this road for approximately 17 miles, by-passing Coalville and going through Ashby-De-La-Zouch, then Woodville and Midway (WARNING: This area is littered with speed cameras - so beware!). When you enter Burton, get into the right hand lane at the bottom of Ashby Road (A511) going straight over the traffic lights and across the Trent Bridge. Staying in the right hand lane, go straight on through both sets of lights at the end of the Bridge, into Horninglow Street. Straight on again at the next lights in the right-hand lane, then turn right at the traffic lights underneath the Brewery fly-over, into Hawkins Lane. Go through the industrial estate, straight across the mini-roundabout and over the Railway Bridge. You will come to a roundabout. Go straight across into Princess Way and the entrance to the ground is 300 yards on your right.

OR Leave the M1 at Junction 24 and follow the signs for the A50 (Stoke and Uttoxeter). Keep on this road, heading west until you reach the Toyota Island and the junction with the A38. Head south on the A38 (Burton and Birmingham) until you reach the first Burton turn off. Take this exit (A5121) and proceed along Derby Road. Go straight across a roundabout and you will then pass a McDonald’s on your right. Just before the next roundabout you will see the stadium on your right. Turn right at the roundabout into Princess Way. A short distance along Princess Way, on the right is the entrance to the Club Car Park.

 

From A38 South (Lichfield, Birmingham)

Take the second exit for Burton (North). Take this exit (A5121) and proceed along Derby Road. Go straight across a roundabout and you will then pass a McDonald’s on your right. Just before the next roundabout you will see the stadium on your right. Turn right at the roundabout into Princess Way. A short distance along Princess Way, on the right is the entrance to the Club Car Park.

 

From M42 Jct. 11 (West Mids) & M5 (South West) - A444

Leave the M 42 at its last exit Junction 11 and go onto the A444 signposted Burton. Stay on the A444 all the way to Burton, going through Overseal and Castle Gresley on the way. On entering Burton, go past the Black Horse and Copper Hearth pubs, straight across the mini-roundabout and you will come to a roundabout with St Peter’s Bridge in front of you. Turn right at the roundabout into Stapenhill Road (A444), which runs parallel to the River Trent, and then turn left at the traffic lights onto the Trent Bridge. Get into the right-hand lane, go straight on through both sets of lights at the end of the Bridge, into Horninglow Street. Straight on again at the next lights in the right-hand lane, then turn right at the traffic lights underneath the Brewery fly-over, into Hawkins Lane. Go through the industrial estate, straight across the mini-roundabout and over the Railway Bridge. Once over the Railway Bridge, you will come to a roundabout. Go straight across into Princess Way and the entrance to the ground is 300 yards on your right.

 

Car Parking:

Car parking is available at the stadium for 400 vehicles, but much of it is reserved for Members. Alternative car parking is available at the Rykneld Trading Estate, across the road from the stadium by the roundabout leading to Princess Way. Otherwise it’s street parking.

 

By Train:

If anyone is staying overnight, it may be worthwhile to look into traveling from Manchester to Tutbury & Hatton Station and then getting a taxi for about £12 to Burton. This may prove to be the cheaper option, but that Station is not suitable for the return journey after a night match. Burton-on-Trent railway station is about a mile and a half from the stadium. As you come out of the station, turn left, cross over and go down the street a short distance. Turn right into Derby Street and from there it is a straight road, becoming Derby Road, up to the stadium. It should take about 25 minutes to walk. Otherwise there is a taxi rank at the station.

 

By Bus from Burton-on-Trent Railway Station

Alcohol is sold inside the stadium (see above).

 

NOTE: If the match is on a Tuesday*, some of the pubs on the way to the stadium may only open from 5:00pm or later, but The Roebuck and The Old Cottage Tavern are open all day. Some of the pubs may be wary of away fans, so it’s probably best not to wear colours.

 

* A Saturday fixture may be moved to a Friday or Monday and a Tuesday fixture may be moved to Wednesday if Derby County are also at home on the Tuesday, because The Brewers share The Rams’ stewards.

The Locomotive Sports Bar in Station Street (next to Thai Massage) is run by ex-Burton Albion Legend Aaron Webster, who was famously ‘arrested’ at Boundary Park in the midst of the Craig Dudley goal celebration. He is now the elite team manager of the football and education programme, organised for school leavers by Burton Albion Community Trust.

The rear door leads out into a beer garden and if you leave by the back gate you are in the Memorial Gardens, which lead to the River Trent with walks towards the Library and Meadowside Leisure Centre, and the Andressey Bridge takes you onto the Washlands, which are criss-crossed by picturesque walks.

Coming out of the front of the Lord Burton and turning left brings you to the end of the High Street, which continues into Lichfield Street, where The Dog is located. Refurbished in 2015 to a high standard and excellent choice of real ales, identified by colour, and serves bar snacks.

This gem of a pub is pretty unique, with an interior unchanged since the 19th Century. A small bar and lounge with beers poured straight from the barrel in the cosy back bar. A very friendly local with good value food. Described by a Grimsby Town fan as: “pub paradise; alehouse Arcadia; all your pub dreams come true; the greatest licensed premises in the known galaxy. It makes Orwell’s Moon Under Water look like Friday night at Wetherspoon’s in Dunstable”.

It serves three real ales from the Wentwell Brewery, one of which is usually a dark beer. After the match, if you want to walk towards the town centre, cross over by the roundabout diagonally to Hawkins Lane. As you go over the railway, the Fish Hut (fish and chips) is on the right and the Great Northern pub is in the adjoining Wetmore Road on the left. From there continue up Wetmore Road from the Great Northern until you come to Wharf Road on the right (or if you are continuing up Hawkins Lane from the Fish Hut, Wharf Road is on your left). Turn into it and then turn left into the first road (Glensyl Way with no name plate) (or turn from Wharf Road into the last road on the right if coming from Hawkins Lane), where you’ll find the Tower Brewery a short distance tucked away on the right. Formerly an office, this small cosy bar is off to the side of the main brewery and features copious Burton brewing memorabilia. There is overspill seating, with tables, in the brewery itself, which also incorporates a stage (with lighting and PA system) and a viewing balcony. It’s only open on Fridays from 4:00pm to midnight - so that's why the match was moved from Saturday!!.

After the match, if you're returning to check-in at the Travelodge opposite the Station, walk back along Derby Road towards the Station, and there is the Derby Inn on the right. Then you come to the Alfred on the right and then on the left is the entrance to the former railway yard, where the Travelodge and the Middle Earth Brew Company's micro-tavern are located.

Returning to Wetmore Road, continue towards the town centre. As you reach the traffic lights turn left for the Burton Bridge Inn, Bridge Street (referred to above).

Walking along Derby Road, at the roundabout in front of the Pirelli stadium turn right and walk for two minutes over the railway to the Great Northern, on the left in Wetmore Road, DE14 1QS. Burton Bridge beers and a guest ale are served, along with the usual keg beers associated with the town. The pub has a big screen showing Sky Sports.

Returning to the roundabout and heading past the stadium along the busy A5121 Derby Road (going in the opposite direction to Burton town centre) on the left you come to the Beech pub between the Pirelli factory and McDonald’s. This is a Marston’s local with a bar at the front, a smaller lounge at the rear and a beer garden.

Continuing along Derby Road going away from the stadium and turning left at the used car business, you come to The Mill House, part of a national chain of family bar/restaurants and situated by the canal between Stretton Church and Derby Road. It‘s a 10-15 minute walk from the stadium and is very handy for people approaching from the A38 - just turn right at the island by Ian Shipton Cars. The food is good, but not cheap, and beers include Bass, Marston’s and Theakston‘s. Children welcome with both indoor and outdoor play areas.

Halfway between the Burton Central Travelodge and the stadium is the Derby Turn fish & chip shop with eat-in facilities at 141-142 Derby Street.

The F.A.'s National Football Centre at St. George's Park, Rangemore is a jewel in the local crown, and is where Daniel Taylor scored the winning goal as Latics Reserves beat Burton Albion Reserves 2-1 on 11^th December 2012.
