Where our goals come from

Recommended Posts

Despite the general trend of football moving away from wingers in a standard 442 I've noticed a lot of goals scored by teams at all levels still come from crosses from out wide.

It doesn't feel like Latics score a lot of those types of goals so I thought I'd look back over the season and do a bit of video analysis.

Out of the 59 goals we've scored this season only 5 have been created from out wide in open play. 4 from the left and 1 from the right.

46 came from the middle channel of the pitch (approximately the width of the penalty area). For me this goes a long way to explaining why we do so badly against teams at the bottom - most of whom will get men behind the ball and pack these areas. The other 8 came from set pieces.

We've only scored 3 headers from open play all season and 1 of those was a second ball in after a corner cleared.

Playing with 2 out and out wingers and a big man up front is probably a thing of the past but having variety and options to your game is key, and lack of this is for me one of our biggest failings this season.

I bet the one from the right didnt come from a cross by B Wilson did it? Nor Winchester for that matter.

Kusunga vs Coventry at home.

To be fair to Wilson he's created a couple of goals from cutting the ball back from inside the box.

Didn't Danny Philliskirk score off a cross from the right against Scunthorpe? It was Jabo Ibehere who scored against Coventry at home

I now recollect the Coventry one-who crossed for both then? Our right side has been piss poor all season!

By the way I do agree with the opening post saying that the lack of width makes it harder to beat these 'lower' teams

I think he means it was Kusunga who crossed. Cracking ball in too.

Yeah I meant that, Kusunga crossed for Ibehre.

Philliskirk's goal against Scunthorpe I had down as being "inside right" rather than wide as Wilson's cross came from inside the penalty area.

Ibehre vs Coventry and Forte vs Notts County (Brown cross from left) are our only proper open play headed goals of the season. That can't be normal!

In comparison, we now need some stats from teams who play with 2 wingers in this division.

I’ve been thinking about how we’ve performed this season, and whether us dropping well short of the playoffs in recent weeks is about right given our squad, or whether we’ve actually let ourselves down…

If we take our results against Crawley Town, Leyton Orient, Colchester United & Yeovil Town - I’ve used Crawley as they were in the bottom 4 prior to the weekend – out of this season’s WDL record so far, we’d be looking at this:

P: 36

W: 14

D: 12

L: 10

S: 48

C: 46

Pts: 54

That’s 54pts with 8 games against bottom 4 material to play. Now considering we’re actually on 56pts after 44 games, that gives us a pretty clear indication that we’ve actually screwed it up this season, rather than sitting in midtable which is where it seems a lot of people feel we belong. There’s absolutely no excuse for not picking up a lot more points from these games than we have done this season, considering our record against everyone else in the division:

Oldham Athletic 0-4 Yeovil Town

Yeovil Town 2-1 Oldham Athletic

Oldham Athletic 1-1 Crawley Town

Crawley Town 2-0 Oldham Athletic

Colchester United 2-2 Oldham Athletic

Oldham Athletic 0-1 Colchester United

Oldham Athletic 1-3 Leyton Orient

Leyton Orient 3-0 Oldham Athletic

P: 8

W: 0

D: 2

L: 6

S: 5

C: 18

Pts: 2

As it stands Chesterfield sit in 6th place on 68pts. If we had picked up just 14pts from those 8 games – that’s only 14/24 – we’d be level with them. If we’d have actually picked up more – even 18/24 – we’d be above Sheff United, and more than likely nailed on for the playoffs.

I’ve not had chance to look at how those teams above us performed against these same 4 teams, however I’d hazard a guess that they would have picked up much more points than what we did, and therefore have less room for improvement unlike ourselves.

IMO, this is where we’ve badly let ourselves down this season. Our performances against these teams are why we’re not in the playoffs, and teams like Sheff United & Chesterfield are. We’re actually unbeaten against 3 of the 4 play off teams this season – just the standard batterings at the hands of MK Dons is what lets us down there.

So frustrating – and nothing but a massive missed opportunity from my point of view.

If we can keep the core of this team, but find that one player who can unlock those teams who sit deep, we could be on to something. We’ve more than proved we’re a match for most teams in this division – but that work is undone due to how inept we are against, to put it bluntly, the utter :censored: that festers at the bottom of this league.

Against the bottom third of teams we are second bottom, only above Yeovil, who have done the double over us...Chesterfield are 8th and Sheffield United are 11th. Rochdale are top, with 38 points from a possible 45.

Against the 4 you speak of specifically, Chesterfield have picked up 14 points with a record of W4 D2 L2 and Sheffield United have also picked up 14 points with a record of W4 D2 L1.

You have omitted Notts County which is a bit dodgy, but when we played them they were mid-table both times we played them so I suppose it's a bit different. It is fair to say that had we cracked the tactics of how to beat the poorest sides we'd be up there. You could probably attribute that to naivety from the manager.

Or no plan B?

don't forget the manager LJ reduced the width of the pitch pre season , so you have more physical limits on our wide play . he then let our one genuine winger Dayton go out on season long loan.

Lj had decided on his tactics pre season and we have few players capable of really running the flanks , though on a wider pitch you would try Forte and Poleon .

then you need a crash bang in the middle to finish the crosses
