"Forget the past, enjoy the present & look forward to the future"

Recommended Posts

The start of the season was full of optimism amongst the OAFC fanbase - new stand, vacant managerial position, better players tied down to longer term contracts. We could only look up.

How wrong could we be? Getting straight to the point - this season has been :censored:. Not just a little bit, but massively :censored:. From the moment we hired Darren Kelly, to the moment he was (clearly) undermined by Dunn - and then the appointment of Dunn, all whilst watching some of the most disappointing football and calamitous defending we've seen for some time.

Blame for all this lies with nobody but the board and they have to take that criticism, no matter how fierce, on the chin. Yes Corney says it got a bit personal at times, but that happens when fans get frustrated and consistently let down. I've been guilty of slating him time and time again this season, and that is even with me still being grateful to him that we do still actually have a club.

Since the Dowie & Sheridan days, we've had some right :censored: rock up at BP (Penney, Dickov, Holden, Kelly & Dunn) and those decisions have been Corney's. LJ aside, who despite the way we feel about his exit was a relative success, the general managerial situation post "Shez part one" has been dire.

However.....bringing Shez back at this time - a time when we're as deep in the :censored: as we have been for a while, a time when we cant string a performance together for 90 minutes and a at a time when we need wins immediately - it just feels "right" - do you know what I mean?

We can all look back at the fact we've parted company before - the poor form prior to his departure and the Hughes/Bell Vue incident - but even then the situation on the field wasn't that bad, was it? I think we would all take that situation right now, wouldn't we? Top half with just over a handful of games to go?

John Sheridan is a club legend to some OAFC fans, hell, probably most OAFC fans. He's certainly one of the best players I have seen at the club, and I still look back at this time in charge of us as impressive.

I know some stats have been banded about already, but here's one that catches my eye the most:

Dave Penney (27.08%)

Paul Dickov (30.50%)

Lee Johnson (34.95%)

Dean Holden (20.00%)

Darren Kelly (11.11%)

David Dunn (15.00%)

There's a list of managers we have had since Sheridan left in 2009. How did Sheridan fare himself?

40.40%. And that's over a longer period than any of the aforementioned managers. His overall record in management full stop is better than those records above.

I guess the point I am trying to get across is for us to try and forget the shambles of the past, more specifically 2015, and look at what we have now with Shez in charge and how we can look to the future. He knows Oldham Athletic, both as a player and a manager, and he knows what the fans want. He has said himself he has unfinished business, so what better time to show that than right now? A team he regards fondly, currently struggling and adrift of safety with a fanbase that has had all the positive energy sapped out of it because of bad decision after bad decision off the field, resulting in bad performances on it.

It's not a perfect world, and with the personalities and egos on here there's bound to be differing opinions on all things Oldham Athletic, but whether you're buzzing with excitement that Shez is back again or whether you're underwhelmed by it, can we not just try and put the last few months/years of garbage and disappointment to the backs of our minds and try and enjoy this journey we ALL hope Shez can take us on, together?

The way I see it?

If we go down, we have a manager who has shown he can win promotion to this league.

If we stay up, we have a manager who can reach the playoffs in this league.

But most of all we have a manager who genuinely has a passion for Oldham Athletic and that is something every person on here shares.

Johnson has gone.

Kelly has gone.

Dunn has now gone.

Forget all that.

Shez is here to complete part 2 - so lets ALL get behind him.

See you at Bradford.

No doubt on both counts... Do we have the stomach to stick by someone though and give them time ?

There were a number of us who, despite Dunn's poor record, were prepared to give him more time. Surprisingly we will afford Shez the same courtesy... Edited by TheBigDog

Certainly be interesting to see if the tide turns if we lose the next 5.

I can't speak for everyone else but I still expect us to go down. The damage has already been done.

However even if we do, we have as good a chance as any to get ourselves back up with Shez in charge. So even if we go on a bad run from now, there's enough to be hopeful for in the medium term that it'll soften the blow.

Excellent post, even the appointment of Shez has started the ripples if positivity for us fans.

Let's face it, we are all in it, on the field, off the field, club employees, on the board, on the terraces. If we are going to get out of this mess we are all going to have to try and pull together.

I'm in.

That's fair enough.

Two days ago relegation was a disaster and we were set to become the next Stockport, now it doesn't matter cos we'll bounce straight back.

Corney really has played a blinder!

We'll know Dunn deserved longer. Regardless, we're not a charity - we took a calculated(?) risk to change managers. Perhaps I was one of the more open to keeping Dunn, but I fully support this decision despite it potentially being harsh on him.

Can't see much backlash, except against the players, more acceptance and apathy.

Thanks for this post. It is a well thought out and, to my mind, sensible view of the situation. It's nice to see positive reasoned arguments without the personal stuff on here. As this post shows, being positive doesn't necessarily mean that you agree with everything that has happened, but that you have a perspective that looks forward to things you can control, not back to those that you can't. I know that this forum is a place to let off steam and vent frustrations, but sometimes...

Final thoughts from me on Dunn and co (don't cheer too loudly)

If the players were so unhappy with what they were being asked to do then they should have had the bollocks to say so, not as if they were dealing with people who had 500 games experience behind them.

Hopefully Shez can put some desire and fight into them, if anybody can it's probably him.
