Magister Posted August 19, 2016 Share Posted August 19, 2016 Take a guided walking tour about 4 hours . They are excellent. East Berlin is the more interesting part of the city. Get a hotel in the west though. Berlin is not the most scenic city but it is certainly up there as one the most interesting and fascinating. maddog Posted August 19, 2016 Share Posted August 19, 2016 (edited) Went to Sachsenhausen concentration camp (about an hour on a train north in Oranienberg) a few years ago (edit: I say a few years ago - turns out it was 12 years ago!) and I think it was free / very cheap, and it was moving beyond words. So much so that Auschwitz did nowt for me emotionally. Reichstag is a no brainer. Think it's free but you need to book. It's such a major building so there are loads of security checks going in but it's actually dead chilled when you're in there. We accidentally had cava in our bag when going through security (as you do) and they took it off us when our bag was scanned. Thought we'd get arrested or something but they just gave us a ticket to collect it from a window on our way out. We went in March a couple of years ago and the weather was brilliant. Picnic in tiergarten was fabulous. We went to a Hertha Berlin game and that was excellent. If you want a 'match day experience', it was great. Tickets were cheap and transport on the u-bahn was included. It has it's own u-bahn station and loads of kiosks selling alcohol and food on the way to the ground (not far). Stewards are lovely. Once you're in you can get food, alcohol (which you can take into the stands) and there's loads of grassy areas to linger before taking your seats. There's a card thing you put money on to buy anything at the concessions inside the ground but you can cash out anything you don't spend before you leave. We took a trip out to Tempelhof which is an old decommissioned airport https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin_Tempelhof_Airport Sorry can't link on my phone. It was really surreal but loads of history and a good bit of exercise! We stayed at artotel near Uhlandstrasse u-bahn station and it was good, cheap, and near enough to get to everywhere. Potsdamerplatz has a thing like the Printworks but a million times better. Sure I've missed loads. The public transport system is ace and everything is very efficient Wasn't overly impressed with the cuisine or bars apart from one place near Alexanderplatz that was like an authentic version of the Bierkeller! Been to both there (well I've also been to a Hertha reserve game too, but no one in their right mind would go to that), and Union is a a more atmospheric ground (built by the fans) as it doesn't have the running track. Either at the airport or before you go buy a travel ticket which covers you on the Subway, trains, buses and Trams. Big saving to me made. If your going to the wall it's spread out so do your research. Alexandraplatz, postumur Platz both worth a visit plenty round there and parts of the wall. Checkpoint Charlie another good one. If you want entertainment Saturday night near Alexandraplatz is a good Bierkeller(not that name obvious style bar) does good food also. There are digital machines with changing prices on the wall. Popular beers on the night go up and vice versa. I've seen wheatbeer sell for 7 and Bitburger fall 1.60.
