There's some big fights coming in the next month:

24th April: Carl Froch v Mikkel Kessler - WBC Super Middleweight Championship fight.
1st May: Shane Mosley v Floyd Mayweather Jr - WBA Welterweight Championship fight.
15th May: Amir Khan v Paulie Malignaggi - WBA Light Welterweight Championship fight.

Tonight's (tomorrow morning's to be pedantic) fight between Pacquiao and Clottey is gonna be on Sky Sports 1, coverage starts at 2am. Should be a good fight, Pacquiao's probably the best in the world right no and he's taking on a guy who's never been stopped (apart from a DQ). Clottey's a durable fighter who's clearly the bigger man out of the two, he's bigger than any opponent Pacquiao's faced before, and will probably be 10-20 pounds heavier than Pacman by the time of the fight.

I think Pacquiao will win, his speed and technique should see him be able to see him maybe score a late TKO else a unanimous decision against Clottey. Clottey's a durable guy, who could potentially hurt Pacquiao, but he's not particularly fast, or has good foot work and he's not really an outside boxer and his KO record isn't really all that good. I think Pacquiao will frustrate him, perhaps score a knockdown, but ultimately win a decision. That said the physical difference could be a factor in the fight....Pacquiao's been hurt before, at the lower weights and Clottey will be significantly bigger than Pacman in the ring.

Anyone else staying up to watch it?

I went to Liverpool last night to watch the Paul Smith fight. Young Oldham boxer Ronnie Heffron was on the undercard. He stopped journey man Karl Taylor in the fourth and final round when Taylor was forced to retire on a cut. Looks promising, although he has signed the Warren which will no doubt hinder his career when he comes of age and starts wanting a decent match up.

I've got tickets for the Haye fight which I can't see being a classic with Ruiz being so awkward. Still there aren't many chances to watch a heavyweight world title fight.

Manny should have far too much for JC he's the faster, fitter and smarter boxer. This fight was just cobbled together after the Mayweather fight fell through. I've set the sky+ for it so will watch it tomorrow.

The Mayweather - Sugar Shane should be a good one.

PM is ideal for Kahn as he has no power and glass hands although he is a very talented fighter but probably more suited to Kahn than anyone else out there. When he fought on the undercard of the Hatton Lazcano fight I remember being very underwhelmed by him and noticing that he didn't like to be walked down. Hatton took him to pieces in their fight too.

Froch (other than his last one) has been in some of the best fights of the past two years and is as entertaining as they come. He came to our boxing club and was an absolute gent. I've never seen definition like his and this was when he was out of training. Kessler will pose him some problems unless he starts putting his hands up and stops relying on the strength of his chin.

I got tickets for the Haye fight too. I'm hoping Haye puts on a good show and gets the job done. That Heffron lad seems to be doing alright, showing some promise...or that's what the rarely wrong has been reporting. He should be alright for a few years with Warren. Warren's pretty good at building up young fighters. If he manages to establish himself in the next 4 or 5 years and gets offered a deal with Top Rank or Golden Boy then he should do what Hatton and Khan did and leave him. That said there's a long way to go before we can even think about Heffron achieving that level.

Have I woken up in 1995?

Wasn't Ronnie H supposed to be going to the Olympics? I know his dad used to box and do the doors in Oldham...

Ha ha. Worrying thing is that'll probably be the best fight of the lot...

Come on boxing - get your act together. MMA is showing you up.

No, it won't. It is embarrassing that RJJ is still fighting. Please Roy, do the sensible thing and retire before you do yourself serious harm.

Clottey was solid enough and I guess he went in looking to go the distance. Very tough fighter but he wasn't ever going to trouble the judges on the cards. Barely a mark on him despite the battering he took at times. Not a classic but I suppose he'll be happy enough losing on points. Wish he'd opened up more at times though.

Clottey's performance was a disgrace to boxing, the only thing that was more sickening was Sky's punditry that Clottey went out "like a warrior". It looked like an old Ricky Hatton training session, when he use to chase Billy Graham around the ring with the big training bag.

MMA's a fad!

**runs from Rummytheowl!**

Hahahahahaa..

I don't think MMA is showing boxing up to be honest, I think boxing could do with looking at the management of some of the larger organisations to take some things on board, and vice versa. I suppose it already has with the MMA Grand Prix style Prizefighter tournament. I can't remember which one it was, UFC101 I think which went up against a big boxing event on the same evening - anyway there were more PPV buys for the boxing than there was for the UFC. There's plenty of life in boxing yet...

MMA has characters, it has brought fitness and martial arts into the mainstream, and it has it's own fashion image. One may not like any of those, but we cannot deny that it what has made it a success so far.

It's not my opinion that it shouldn't (I think censorship, prohibition and general government mollycoddling ought to be minimised in all walks of life), but such is the level of violence I've at times seen on UFC/MMA that I'm surprised it's even allowed to be broadcast.

It's certainly not what people think it is...

MMA has still got a long way to go, and Dana White has almost single handedly made the sport conform to many state regulations and laws in America, which has seen it shown of other states other than the "heartlands" of California, Ohio, and Nevada. The mainstream sport will never go back to the NHB of the late eighties early nineties, and the almost NHB of PRIDE and such like - and that's a good thing. Yeah it's a spectacle of gladiatorial proportions for those who sought it back in the day - an if you still want to see it, it's still there in the form of Shooto in Japan, Pancrase and Vale Tudo in Brazil, but it don't pay that good to get your head cracked open on an undercard. It had to re-invent itself to get the sponsorship and the money flowing in.

Martial arts and MMA has evolved more in the last fifteen years than it has in the preceding 700 years, since Greco-Roman Wresting, Pankration and Merikan. That's a good thing.

That sounds like sense to me, however some of these blokes are still proper nutcases. A good mate of mine is living in San Diego now and he's apparently become big mates with a fella who has officially changed his name from Jon Koppenhaver to 'War Machine'. This bloke was in their forces and these days makes a living out of MMA and porn whilst he enjoys beating people up in his spare time. He's meant to be a proper loose cannon. Can't wait to meet him... :help:

I bet it's gay porn he's into as well. You can tell felcher-boy from me that his antics don't impress me one bit and if he wants to make something of it, then he can just come on over and introduce himself to me. I'll open up a can of whup-ass all over him before he's got his faggoty little leotard on.

Yours sincerely,

Sir Richard Branston.

Bateson's ABC in Leeds although these days I'm more interested in helping the kids development than getting a slap in the face myself.

Ha. I train at the newish Oldham club in Derker, but I go more for the fitness aspect really.

How come Leeds doesn't produce any fighters of note....? Nothing like Manchester,Sheffield etc. Are you all soft up there?!

On the night Haye and Valuev 'fought', the real heavyweight champion of the world - Fedor - was having a proper fight with Brett Rogers.

I love boxing, but there not enough excitement in the game these days. When it comes to entertainment, MMA wins hands down.

Considering he went a bit nutty at some pornstars party and a warrant has been issued for his arrest I doubt you will be meeting him unless you really want to go to prison and his dreams of a career :censored: chicks beyond his dreams are over. Oh and since he was nicked, in a seperate incident, coming out of a club which is known as "gay but straight friendly" I doubt LL's usual remarks were that far from home.

I agree with every word Lord Mandelson says.

He did, you're right. That was a great counter punch from Fedor, good fight - Strikeforce can put some cracking main events on. However, to be fair Haye had a belter too - Valuev was rocked in the 12th, he was doing the friggin chicken dance.

After now hearing Clottey's comments about the pay day he got it makes it all the more baffling why he didn't attack more. He seemed happy to get his losers cheque yet had he somehow surprised everyone and rocked Pacquiao he could have been on to the big stage picking up real big money. Disappointing attitude to say the least. Dragged up at short notice, bet he couldn't believe his luck.

I’m from Oldham and tell them this all the time. Johannson was pretty decent and there are a few youngsters on the up but other than that they are someway behind Manchester and Sheffield.

Sheffield would no doubt be similar if there wasn’t an Ingle gym there. But you only need one good boxer from your town and city to get everyone else interested and away from sports such as Rugby and Football where all their focus may have been in the past.

Culturally Leeds is the same. There hasn’t been a good band from Leeds since the Wedding Present. Yet Sheffield and Manchester have churned them out for years. Same goes for decent actors and the like.

  • 1 month later...

A big night for British boxing tonight.

First on SkySports1 is Kevin Mitchell v Michael Katsidis. Mitchell is an undefeated boxer from Dagenham with a very textbook style. He's fighting for the WBO-Interim Lightweight title, which basically means if he wins he'll fight Juan Manuel Marquez or Marquez will vacate his title which will make Mitchell the actual champion. I'm gonna liken tonight to Ricky Hatton's first title win against Kostya Tszyu in 2005, which was basically Hatton's "coming out fight". Tonight's the same for Mitchell, he's been criminally overlooked by the British media, yet he's unbeaten in 31 fights. Remember that dude that sparked Khan out in 50 seconds? Mitchell beat him beautifully over 12 rounds and made it look easy.

The guy he's fighting is a warrior as well, Katsidis, he had a 5 round war with Graham Earl a few years back which was like something out of Rocky. Katsidis will make this a war and Mitchell can take and throw a punch so I can see this being a toe to toe brawl. It has fight of the year written all over it.

That's at 8pm on Sky Sports 1.

On the undercard: Derek Chisora (loud mouth undefeated British heavyweight) v Danny Williams

The Olympians, James Degale, Billy Joe Saunders and Frankie Gavin are also fighting which makes up a cracking card.

Then tonight from Madison Square Garden:

Amir Khan defends his WBA Light Welterweight Championship and Paulie Malignaggi

Which is on ITV at 02:45am. Also on that undercard is Victor Ortiz v Nate Campbell. Wins for Ortiz and Khan could see them both set up for a clash at the end of the year. Ortiz who was thought of as one of the biggest prospects in American boxing suffered a set back last year when he was KO'd by Marcos Maidana, a massive power puncher who Khan ducked in order to fight Malignaggi. As you might remember Malignaggi fought Ricky Hatton in Nov 08 and lost when his corner pulled him out unfairly. He was no where in the fight but didn't need to be stopped with only one round to go. Malignaggi has improved since then, beating Juan Diaz twice but only being awarded one decision. He ain't a power puncher and probably won't KO Khan (but with Khan's chin you never know, Willie Limond hurt Khan and he wasn't a power puncher either!), but Paulie is a fast footed, durable, technician who isn't gonna be blasted away in the first round. Hatton's the only guy to stop Malignaggi. Miguel Cotto is the only fighter to put him down. Khan is in for a tough night.

So, it's gonna be a boss night of boxing.
