Random Old Songs & Chants

Recommended Posts

This is a totally random thread for people who find themselves singing old songs and chants for no apparent reason (may well just be me).

This morning I have woken up with this classic which I can't get out of my head:

We signed the lad to score us goals

Abbott, Abbott

And Oldham was the team he chose

Abbott, Abbott

Like half of England, he's a Pole

He gets the ball and he scores a goal

Pavel Abbott, Oldham's number nine

Keep Oldham in my heart, keep me Latics
Keep Oldham in my heart, I pray
Keep Oldham in my heart, keep me Latics
Keep me Latics till my dying day.

Gary Kelly's disco pants are the best
they go right from his arse to his chest
They're better than Adam & The Ants
Gary Kelly's disco pants.

Think the top one has a version with negative connotations for some Latics fans so it doesn't get sung anymore.

Not heard "Keep the blue flag flying high" much, used to be a favourite of mine.

Did we ever properly sing 10 men went to mow, or was that only on Junior Latics coaches? Think that's a slavery song though.

There's the rarely covered second verse of Andy Ritchie's magic too

We will follow the Oldham

O'er land and sea (AND LEICESTER!)

We will follow the Oldham

Onto victory (ALTOGETHER NOW)

[Rinse and repeat]

Was sung quite a few times during the pinch-me seasons. Unsure if the AND LEICESTER bit has any symbolic meaning or whether it's just a random team threw in by someone.

My father used to say that when he was a kid people used to shout something that sounded to me like "lake-up Oldham!" to encourage the team. We're talking a long time ago here, but I'd be interested to know if anyone ever heard similar or knows where such an unusual phrase came from...

I think your Dad did miss hear it, but it's still in regular use most games....

"Wake-up Oldham" can be heard from most part of the ground during the game ;-)

That's great to know, thanks! I was wondering if it was my dad winding me up many years ago as I've never actually heard it or of it elsewhere... I'm heading over for the Millwall match at the end of the month - I might briefly revive it. Cheers for the info.

  • 3 weeks later...

Might be onto something there. Apparently, "lecking out," is West Yorkshire for, "playing out." What is obviously hilarious.

"Larking" in East Yorkshire is another word for "playing". As in "That Holloway's a good larker" (player). Could be some tenuous connection?

4 hours ago, Latics and England said:

"You'll never get past M'Voto. He's magic, you know".

We thought he was great. Shows how good our centre halves were last season.

To be fair I always thought he was very average. Maybe I've got an eye for an over rated CB...
