If we're looking for those rumoured to be signing, but didn't, where is the proof we actually signed The Lesser Spotted Rob Purdie? Does he even exist?

I seem to remember he played  for Latics reserves against Manchester United Reserves at Stalybridge once.

Yep, we spunked it on an England captain who got us promoted. Ok, we got relegated again the next season, but You can't have everything.

Bloody Hardwick was at one stage in a FIFA 100 greatest ever players.

Kancheslskis was a rumour early 90's swap deal for Craig Flemmimg.

The one about David Batty was that Leeds were going to let him go but once they found out Joe Royle was in for him, and seeing Royles reputation for finding rough diamonds in big clubs youth set ups they changed their mind.

I thought it was because Royle had been having local businessmen chuck in for signings with a cut of any profits when they were sold on but that the League/FA had become not too happy with such dealings so the board said no to this one....?

Autumn ‘87 George Reilly

David Batty ‘88 deal had been agreed then Bremner was sacked Wilkinson blocked the deal

1990 Andy Goram was returning

Tony Cottee, Nigel Jemson and Dalian Atkinson Summer of ‘92 instead we signed Olney

Club director Norman Holden funded several signings in the mid-late 80s including Tommy Wright, Linighan amongst others when sold on he’d recoup his outlay and split the profit with the club 50/50 it’s in JRs autobiography

I thought the choice in 92 was John Aldridge or Ian Olney? Olney did alright for his first season tbf it just went wrong for him in his second season.

He did his knee, think it may have been a double cruciate, in his second season and effectively never played again.

Sort of injury these days is 15 months out but not end of career.

That seems odd though as surely they wouldn’t have let Denis Irwin go either
