A little story about Gordon. I started following Latics from New Zealand back in 1990 due to a program on TV there called The Road to Wembley... what caught my eye was the 5th round matchup, on this strange plastic pitch, and the replay and the 2nd replay....I kept on following Oldham's progress until in become a terrible full on passion. Anyway, I first came to the UK in 1993 on a gap year and was working at a school in London, and thought I needed to pay a visit, so I jumped on the train to Manchester and eventually got off a train at Werneth, made my way up Featherstall Rd to Boundary Park. After buying a lot of stuff at the Club Shop, I asked if I could see inside the ground, and that is when Gordon appeared.....he took me on a mini tour of the ground, and talked and talked to me....I think he was as interested as how a Kiwi was supporting Latics as anything else.....he had all the time in the world for me, he was absolutely amazing.
8 Years later he did exactly the same thing for me......he remembered me from 1993....and had been back to NZ and back to the UK, and this time he took me up to the changing room and a more thorough tour....introduced me to Andy Ritchie, and J Shez ........and a couple of other players who were there..........What a man he was......had all the time in the world for me........ I have shed a tear or two.....the world needs more Gordon Lawton's, more so now than ever before...and I would love to listen to the tributes at his funeral if they are recorded......
Sorry if thats a bit long......but great memories for me.
