  1. I can't believe some of the comments on this thread. The comment heard was the type of banter that goes on privately in workplaces all the time throughout the country. The problem has been caused by the prat who recorded it and posted it on social media. He seems more concerned with his social media image than he does with the reputation of the club. He needs to grow up or ship out.
  2. This is a desperately needed facility for the whole of Oldham. At the moment hundreds and hundreds of kids of all backgrounds, playing for teams based in the town, have to play their home games in places like Ashton, Reddish and Droylsden, because our town has nothing suitable. That is a disgrace for somewhere the size of Oldham. The Council will probably say that the cost has been prohibitive but they seem to find the funds for their crackpot schemes easily enough.
  3. Preferably the latter. I've got good idea. Let's boo one of our own players when he comes on & before he touches the ball. That'll make him play better.
  4. I've read all through this thread, and there's not one mention of something else that's another problem here - our own entitled supporters. Yeah, I've heard all the arguments about how the fans pay their money so they're entitled to moan/ we should be beating these part time pub teams cos we're a big club/ blah, blah, blah etc. But come on - booing one of your own players when he's coming on? For God's sake, what possible good can this do? Yeah, we're great fans when it's going well, but sometimes when things aren't going so well is when the players need encouragement the most, and that's when some of our lot quickly turn to personal abuse. It's clear that other teams know how quick we are to turn on the team, and understandably, they try to play on it. I'm not saying we shouldn't make our feelings known, but maybe there's a less abusive way of doing so. I'm not saying a change in fans attitude will solve the deep rooted problems in our beloved team, but it just might help a bit. Just think about it a little eh. Don't forget, this is my opinion and I'm just as entitled to express it as anyone else. I'm not going to enter into a great debate so anyone else can feel free to try and belittle what I have written and have the last word. (I'll don my tin helmet now and prepare myself for the torrent of abuse that may soon come my way.)
  5. Err . . . that's why he took them off. Sounds like he got it right by making the right choice. Certainly not by default
  6. Chapman out wide? I assume you've seen something in him I haven't. His only acceptable games for us have been in centre mid. He's been crap out wide. Another one who needs to put more in.
  7. Don't know how accurate this is but I'll post it anyway. It was posted on Facebook a couple of years ago. This was told by Jimmy Frizzell at a sportsman's dinner at Shaw Masonic Hall, probably about 2005. Jimmy had agreed to do a Q&A and was asked how Grovesy came to sign for us. Jimmy explained that he thought he had assembled a good squad. He had just got Dick Mulvaney to shore up the defence. He had got Colin Garwood up front to partner George Jones as Colin was very much a 20 goals a season man. He had persuaded Andy Lochhead to add some experience and nowse. He had George McVitie on one wing to supply accurate crosses but he felt we were a bit lacking on the left. He had spoken to the Bournemouth chairman at the start of the 73/74 season and enquired about Grovesy, but was told there was no way he would be leaving Bournemouth as he was the best player in the league by a long way and they were up at the top of the league and expected promotion. A few months went by. One day Frizz got a call from the Chairman of Bournemouth asking if the club were still interested in taking Grovesy to BP. The deal was done and in parting Frizz asked the Chairman why he had changed his mind. The Chairman replied "He may be the best player in the league but I have just found out that for the last six months he has been shagging my wife, so he has to go". And that is the reason why we got him.
  8. If you haven't got this, Bristol Rovers away, Easter 1974. 1min 34 secs in.
  9. My favourite ever player. I sometimes wonder what he would have been worth in today's game, where players (for me) are over protected and roll around in fake agony at the slightest touch. He would have been unplayable.
  10. Forgotten away days - how about St Mirren away in the Anglo Scottish Cup semi-final on a Tuesday night in the late 1970s. About 20-30 of us went on a mini bus. Got to Glasgow at about 4.30pm. It was in the days of 3pm last orders in the afternoon in England so it was a novelty for us for the pub to be open at this time. We went to the game & there were so few of us the home crowd treated us as guests, which was unexpected, especially with no segregation. The first leg had finished 1-1 & this game was 0-0 at full time so it went to extra time. They scored in the first period & we thought, that's it, but a 35 yard screamer from Alan Young in the second period took the game to pens. We scored our first four, Peter McDonnell saved two of theirs, & we were through to the final (against Burnley - another story). Suddenly it wasn't as friendly any more so we retired to the bar under the stand. We set off back at about midnight & got dropped off at C&A in town at 5.15am. Happy days! Other memories of this game. Paul Heaton (about 5ft 6in) playing centre half and Vic Halom being absent from the team photo in the changing rooms afterwards. He was changed & in the bar with us about 5 minutes after the final whistle!
  11. Forgot Ronnie Blair. He certainly wasn't a fairy!!
  12. Mouldy Old Dough is part of the club. When we won the old 3rd Div in 1974 ( I think) it was great to see the lads come out to Mouldy Old Dough. Ian Wood, Maurice Whittle, the great Alan Groves, Colin Garwood, George McVitie, etc. I could name loads more. Footy was different then though. They tried to stay on their feet unlike the fairies we watch now. I'll say no more.
  13. Well said sir. If the opinions on here had been actioned years ago both Sir Jimmy and Sir Joe would have been sacked in their early managerial career. (Well, maybe not Jimmy)
  14. Y'know what. The only two managers we've had in the last 40 odd years who did anything both nearly got relegated, but guess what? The owners stuck by what they saw as potential, kept stability, and they were ultimately rewarded. Tell me guys, what would you do instead?
  15. If anyone is wandering around down town Al Khobar in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, you might spot me in my tangerine Latics shirt.
