Only a friendly so means very little but....

Ripley - looks decent. One mistake first half which he immediately recovered from to make a good save

Law - impressed. Bigger & more of a presence than the type of fullbacks we've gotten used to of late. We were told he's a set piece specialist and he went close with a free kick. He should be good for 5 goals+ from these over the season I'd say.

Reckord - again bigger than I thought he was going to be. A steady job, did little wrong that springs to mind

Edmundson - I liked what we saw of him at RB back end of last season and he could be much further along than we were expecting on todays showing at CB. Commanding in the air, won 3 headers impressively in about 10 seconds at one point during the second half.

Vocal too - telling the much older, more experienced Law where to be on several occassions.

Only a friendly but he could well be ready....

Stott - CB. looked OK. Can't imagine Robinson is planning for us to see much of him if Clarke and Burgess come in but if he's needed there's definitely somthing there.

Wilson - played at CB. a solid captains performance. I've never noticed him be so vocal before (it was quiet I suppose).

Flynn - decent first half. Tidy, all round midfielder. Not as noticeable before he went off 2nd half with Hudds coming out on the front foot. Imagine, as expected, he'll be one of our best players this season.

Klok - exactly what we expected. He'll be great between suspensions.

Winchester - I thought he'd filled out in a good way early on but he was goosed way too early. Did little. Gonna be a great shame if he wastes his talent.

Erwin - put himself about, good touch. Looks the kind of player we thought Cassidy was on his first game & a half before injury last season.

Mckay - lively, linked play well. Very optimistic he'll be the goalscorer we've been missing since Baxter.

Nabi - the lad released from West Brom. Looked awful to start with and nobody was passing to him but knuckled down and grew into the game. Worth another look in my opinion.

Croft - I thought he did well when finally called upon back end of last season and he was very good again today. Pushed Edmundson for man of the match from the subs bench. Provided he's not after too much money sign him back up ffs.

Cassidy - I always think criticism of him is a bit OTT as he's never had enough of a run for us to properly judge. If Robinson isn't going to ever start him either we might aswell just get rid. I can't think of a player who's had so little impact from so many substitute appearances.

Brown - great lad, terrible footballer. We were defending very well at 0-0 v Championship opposition until he came on. Within minutes his man created their first. He was shocking.

Kettings - I thought this was our poorest signing so far but he did OK.

Mantack, Woodland, Byrnes & Knight weren't really on long enough to give an opinion.

All in all a decent run out.

What was most promising of all was how organised SR has us looking already after the players being here such a short amount of time.....

If the four we're rumoured to be signing on Monday are all first team starters things could be looking very promising.

Personally thought Byrnes played well despite being out of position. Mantack looked fairly decent but there was a few times where he looked like he was playing to impress the gaffer and not to win the game and he looked like a full back and not a wing back. Would love to see how they both fair in position for a decent length of time.

He's probably 2 stone heavier than he was this time last year, but that's a good thing if he was using unrealistic training methods to get in shape to earn a contract. I'd be disappointed if he got a contract without strict conditions attached but he is actually quite good at football

A rolling contract. You can finish that one...

But yeah, he is a talented footballer. He just simply can't be trusted to look after himself. It must send out a bad message to the rest of the squad, too.

To be brutally honest, I hope the 4 coming in by Tuesday are all guaranteed first team starters.

There certainly wasn't enough there today to suggest we'll hold our own in league 1 next season.

I know we're not done but more of the same won't be enough. Time to up the ante.

Time to make that team look like they have goals in them. It certainly didn't look like that today.

Of course we need more quality, but the majority of that squad have been in training for a week.

Where's Crofty?

Ripley, Edmundson, Stott, Wilson, Reckord, Law, Flynn, Klok, Winchester, Erwin, Mckay.

Subs: Kettings, Cassidy, Brown, Mantack, Byrnes, Woodland, Knight.

The last bit of the bench sounds like an air freshener; which is very apt given the events of the last few weeks.

This friendly could have been priceless if it keeps Connor Brown out of the team. Clearly at fault for the first and a major contributor for their second and he only came on at 67 minutes.

My reading of the way we set up and played is that this is going to be a "concede fewer goals than you" rather than "score more than you" season. If this is the case we simply can not afford to have special mention giving away a goal a game - he was the weak link and if Huddersfield didn't know this Coleman will have told them which is why I think they went straight after him and why after the first goal Croft was then put on the right in an attempt to protect our perennial weak link.

How did Winchester perform yesterday?

He was alright. Put in a few good tackles, needs to work on positional sense of a CM though.

What formation/formations did we play?

3-5-2/5-3-2 whichever way you want to look at it. Switched to 4-4-2 for last 5/10 minutes.

If we are going to play with the back 3/5 then the outer 2 of the 3 CB's need to be players comfortable moving out to full back so the wing-backs can actually attack.

The midfield 3 will need work aswell, they all pressed at times and Huddersfield was able to walk through the 3 of them. Based on the players contracted, the midfield 3 might need to be Klok, Woodland and then one of Winchester/Flynn as the more attacking one. However, Croft was probably the best of the midfielders we had on the pitch yesterday.

Croft, Flynn, Reckord had decent games. Wouldn't bother with the trialist who came on second half at ctr mid.

I'd have another look based on the fact he actually got into the game a bit after looking the worst player I'd ever layed eyes on for his first 10 minutes...

If he has a worst start than than Cameron Dummigan at Gillingham, then he was really bad. As you say, it's possible to make a judgement too early.
