How scouting has changed

Saw this video the other day on youtube and it shows how data analysis is changing the way players are recruited.

It highlights Tarkowski and the main reason why he was recruited by Dyche was because they looked at the statistics and say how many aerial duels Tarkowski won. I hope we are using things like this when we are looking at recruiting players.

Do they do in depth stats like this on L1 and 2 players, let alone French 3rd. and 4th. divisions?

Well if they do we should be checking them out.

If we want to compete and be successful then we are going to have to be innovative in how we find and recruit players.

Even at league 2 level we still dont have that much clout in the transfer market. We no longer have Joe Royle who can find us a gem in a youth team and if we are to find a good manager then they are more likely to move on much quicker these days see  the Lee Johnson example. So we have to go and find a way to recruit players which doesn't depend on 1 brilliant manager or where we can outgun another club financially.

Their are players out there now who we could find that would come to us this transfer window who could seriously improve us. We just have to find them.

You can have someone to find those gems all you want but when the majority are happy to sit in the under 23s picking up thousands a week without playing a competitive match rather than come to facilities like a lot of league 1 and 2 clubs have you're up shit creek without a paddle most of the time

Daniel Iverson, Sam Surridge, Callum Lang all came here knowing full well that the facilities were worse than their parent clubs. Their are probably hundreds of players out on loan in league 1 and 2 from PL and championship clubs. Most players in those academies know this when they are sent out on loan and most accept it.

Any player who doesn't want to come here and play competitive football because its cold or because their parent clubs have a nicer shower or sauna then quite frankly we dont want them as they are too soft and will never make a career in football. The vast majority are not like that. I reckon their are 15-20 players out their now sat in reserve teams in the 3 leagues above us who would willingly come here and improve us. Probably just as many in the French lower leagues too and plenty in the national league and semi pro leagues too we just have to go and find them.

I’d like to think so too... but equally, I wouldn’t be surprised if there were many more that preferred the home comforts, exhorbitant wages & glamour - without a burning desire to prove themselves - that premier league & championship academies afford them. The system is symptomatic of the broken greedy capitalist society in which we live. Those staunch left wing socialists football supporters whom vigorously defend the obscene spending of their wealthy football clubs amuse me with their blind hypocrisy.

The last 2 players Joe Royle recommended to us were George Green and Courtney Duffus, both failures here for various reasons. BP has a better record than that (Surridge).

However, if you are talking in more general terms 30+ years ago Joe Royle’s record at finding bargains was second to none. These days considerably less so.

It’s probably a sign of how football has moved on.

All loans. Royle got people who were happy to bin off the wages and comforts they had to sign full time did he not? Although the wages etc weren't so different back then

Of course I'm talking about Royle 30 years ago

The likes of Barrett Warhurst Irwin etc were either binned or told to leave this was pre Bosman when clubs had abit more power over players.

Also Clubs now seem to see youth development as a business model rather than a source of future first team players they sign them on good contracts loan them out and when the chance comes sell them on.

A few will still be let go and we will get the chance to sign them but alot will be out of our price range but if we can get them on loan for a season and they get us out of the division then it's still worth our while to play the loan system even if we don't get a transfer fee when they come to leave.

Both Barrett & Warhurst joined Latics for a fee.

Less than 50k for the pair though.

My point is players who are binned off or told to leave dont normally command any fee, especially then.

There was a doubt about Warhursts fitness due to asthma but both were well thought of by many at City.

Irwin was binned off by Bremner for free.

We benefited from quite a few Bremner cast-offs.

Probably more deserving of a North Stand gold brick than Corney.

My Dad's more deserving of a Gold brick than Corney and he helped save Andy Payton.

(He did something very similar for one of our players a few years earlier- think it was Tony Henry).

Did he really? That's so bizarre.... I was out last night and met a Hull fan and we talked about that very event/game, as we were both there......

Yep. Basically the Hull physio had put his bag just out of reach so couldn’t keep Payton from swallowing his tongue and reach his bag. My Dad was in the old boxes above the main stand paddock so had a great view and rushed on to the pitch to help. It’s one of my first memories of supporting Latics.
