League 2 beginners guide

Anyone got one?

I'll admit I have no clue whatsoever about the goings on down there - or down here I suppose I need to start saying. The little information on the teams I do know about is years out of date in some cases.

It's probably been a case of me being a little stuck up in never even contemplating life down here but I never even bothered to check the league table out.

So what of the runners and riders then? Who are the big hitters? Who are the money bags? Can we expect the three play off losers to be up there again? (At this moment I don't even know who they are I've not quite come to terms with this yet)

Most importantly if we approach this like a proffessional club, not the penny pinching traditional latics way, do we have a chance of success?

I can't be the only one here who still quite hasn't come to terms with relegation. Who has been nieve enough to turn a blind eye to league two over the years knowing it will never happen ?.

So go on you educated lot. Give me hope

I remember going down from the prem. I hadn’t really been a massive football fan until I went to a few in the prem watching oldham. I had absolutely no clue about any teams below the prem. personally I think it makes u a more rounded football fan! I can imagine more than half the prem fans have no idea about lower league football. Obvs still would rather not be in league 2, but it is what it is! Think I have come to terms with it now..... just!

I've watched Exeter at this level on a semi-regular basis over the last few years, so I've got a decent idea of what things are like.  This is an overview of last season.

Top 8 - Accrington and Luton deserved to go up.  While both teams were up for the battle, they had quality players in midfield and proven goalscorers in Kee and Hylton respectively.  They showed that a large budget helps (Luton) but it's possible to play decent football on a low budget (Accrington) with the correct local young contacts.  Wycombe were regularly the most cynical team I saw play at Exeter.  Route One and every trick in the book.  However Ainsworth knew exactly what he was doing and bought in the right players to do the job.  Lincoln were very similar, again Cowley proving to be a shrewd manager.  Notts, Coventry and Mansfield all had solid and physical defences and smart defensive midfields (Michael Doyle and Liam Kelly for Coventry being the perfect example) but had pace and athleticism in attack which was mostly effective.  Marc McNulty might be the talent that sets Coventry apart though.  Exeter are usually known for passing football (last year was very talented with pace on the break) but this year they've been much more functional and have heavily relied on Jayden Stockley's goals.

Middle of the pack - a mixture of underachieving physical teams (Swindon, Cambridge, Carlisle), experimental teams playing decent football (Crawley, Crewe and Colchester) and slightly overachieving teams on low budgets (Newport and Stevenage).

Bottom 8 - mostly dysfunctional garbage if I'm being honest.  Forest Green the slight exception who played good football but were very weak and disorganised in midfield.  How Jim Bentley has regularly kept Morecambe up on their budget is a minor miracle!

How do we compare? - pretty well currently.  As much as I rate Hamer, Edmundson and Stott, either Clarke or Gerrard will be crucial.  Byrne (if he stays) could be our McNulty, Davies and Holloway are the right type of players and McEleney and Nepomuceno would have some joy in attacking midfield positions.

The big things we need are a savvy defensive midfielder to play alongside Fane or Gardner (Neal Bishop or John Welsh are out of contract and the right type of players) and a physical goalscorer if Davies or Holloway can't do the business.  The latter may require a fair amount of money.

From years watching the highlights, a massive thing that stands out is calamitous defensive errors, followed sometimes by open goal misses.

So a right-place, right-time finisher will score for fun, and competent sturdy defending will get you far. Maybe a good environment for our young defenders to develop.

That's a fair assessment, although I see Doyle as a finisher and I think he would only score a bagful alongside a physical foil.

I really believe that building the attacking strategy around Byrne, playing him in an advanced role off a big forward and in front of 2 holding midfielders, would set us apart from the rest of the league and earn him a move to the Championship the following season (hopefully with a big pay day for us).

I'd start next season with Edmundson alongside Clarke, but I agree that this season could be the making of any of those 3 youngsters.

I've been thinking that as well. Clarke would help the youngsters develop and would be as good as a specialist coach. It's a lot to expect them to play the season without any older head around and Clarke's quality on the ball would stand out at that level.

As bad as we were last year the team is decent and has good players if we keep them together we should ok! The problem may be wellens, let’s hope he can sort it out!

I still think he is capable of getting the team motivated but surely he has learnt a lot from last season in his first season as a manager.

I'm  over the initial depression of being relegated but now actually looking forwards to next season.
