He wasn’t shite. He was pretty average though from a natural talent perspective. The thing was that his desire and work rate made up for his lack of natural talent.

It doesn’t come as a big surprise that some people will look for those capable of moments of brilliance when identifying their favourite players whilst others will be attracted to those who gave their all for the club. Both views are perfectly reasonable.

The story that surrounds Ernie will undoubtedly help keep him further forward in some fans’ thoughts than other players but those memories are still based upon what he did for the club at a time when things looked pretty grim (differently grim to now). There are other players who have been taken away too soon or been through very tough times after leaving the club. Their names are not filling these lists so maybe Ernie was a bit different.

Well quite, no-one's singing Richard Butcher's praises (I still think we were unfair on him).

Gregan

Baxter (1st time round)

My personal favourites from the last 25 years:

1. Neil Adams

2. Kieran Lee

3. Richie Wellens

Wouldnt say they were our best 3, but those 3 really stand out as players I really looked forward to turning up to watch.

He was dependable enough but Kieran Lee, in your top three over a period of twenty-five whole years?! Do you even like football...?!

Cooksey was shite so had to try hard, fact is, if he wasn't dead he would be nowhere near anyone's top three players.

I can see your point, subtle as it is not, but Ernie was very fondly thought of by Latics fans even after he’d left the club and before his diagnosis. He made a big impact in the aftermath of Chris Moore’s exit.

I loved him. Was a time when I could follow Latics everywhere and he was most of the reason I enjoyed going to so many games. Just stands out for me as one of my favourite ever players.

His impact any greater than say Paul Murray at that time? I seem to recall seeing a piece and he was buying the lads lunches. Proper footballer. Cooksey was barely in the side.

He played for just over 12 months. He is nowhere near in anyone's books and would be almost forgotten had he not died.

He was a cult hero. Shouldn't have been near the side really but was well liked because he was a grafter.

"it got me thinking; whose the best 3 players you’ve seen in a latics shirt in the last 25 years?"

A bin man who tried hard and was fired off 13 months into his spell with us. No one would pick him in a top 50 him had he not died.

Lee Duxbury, Fitz Hall, Clint Hill, Pogs, Eyres, Sheridan. I think all these players played at a similar time.

Paul Murray single handedly kept us up after the shit show that happened with Chris Moore. Ernie was part of a team that grafted and won points where we definitely shouldnt have, which is always appreciated by the fans and following his death it meant that he was remembered a lot more than others in that team and became the symbol for the team that surpassed all expectations.
