The “new South Stand” as it then was built in 1913. It had 2222 seats.

Apparently the terracing in front had 22 steps and had a capacity of 5200.

It was originally called the Joseph Heller stand.

What a time to be a Latics fan... a new main stand, semi finalists in the FA Cup and so close to winning the 1st Division.

Then the assassination of Franz Ferdinand spoilt it 😔

Interesting article about the building of the stand here.  Apparently the roof of the stand that was there previously was used to cover the Chaddy End.

What is even more intriguing is the summary of the playing squad. The tallest player being Phil Warhurst at 5’11 and both goalkeepers are only 5’8 😲

And one of those keepers, Howard Matthews, played for England.

Think goalkeeper  Eddie Hopkinson was as small, but top class.
