Motto, you don't give away your best players.

What did we get for them and what's the total value of them now?

Nope - 15th

The real question is where would we have finished if he stayed in charge for the whole season.

We were 9th and 2 points off the playoffs when he left for Barnsley.  Granted we had hit a bit of a bad patch but I couldn't see him letting us drop as far as we did by the end of the season under Holden.

Probably not that much better. The rot had set in, which seemed to coincide with the Ched Evans debacle.

Ripley- Wasn't our player

Lee- Left on a free (outside club's control).

Tarky - Sold for approximately £300k with a sell-on that Corney sold to fund a stand the club don't own.

Clarke- Left on a free (club said he is too old).

Grounds - Left on a free (outside club's control)

Stephens - Sold for approximately £300k with a sell-on that was still active (we got some money when Charlton sold him to Brighton. We may even be in a better position as we don't have to pay Bury their share of our money too).

K Smith- Sold for an undisclosed fee (not known if we have a sell-on clause).

C Taylor - Sold on a free, having previously rejected offers (outside club's control).

Baxter - 1st time sold for approximately £500k. 2nd time released on a free as club seemingly chose not to renew his contract.

Forte- Left on a free (outside club's control).

M. Smith - Left on a free (outside club's control).

As to what those who are still playing (Forte's retired) are worth. Well Clarke, Baxter and Taylor would be free transfers.

Grounds will probably be a free transfer as he was loaned to Bolton last season, but didn't play much.

Tarky is apparently worth £50 million while he is still under contract. Stephens is probably worth about £10 million, while he is still under contract.

Given the ages most seem likely to be available on a free transfer when their current contract expires. Although M. Smith was recently sold by QPR to Millwall for an undisclosed fee.

I’ve seen Kieran Lee mentioned a few times in these kind of things.

He was largely average for us wasn’t he and only became decent after he left?

I don't buy this out of our clubs control. They were under contract and could have been secured for longer if offered better terms earlier.

You don't let good players go for nothing.

I suppose it all depends om how much they want and how much our club thinks they're worth.

Some might not stay however good the terms were or just want to move up a division or to a better or bigger club.

Home of the unloved! we take on player's nobody else wants, find the odd gem now and again, polish the gem and let it go, for peanuts.

Had we been able to keep hold of some of the said 'gem's for a longer period, we most certainly wouldn't playing or losing to the likes of Salford shitty in this crap league of shite.

Sorry, but very few thought Matt Smith deserved a new contract before that Liverpool game. IIRC you didn't rate him much initially yourself and you earnt money from scouting players.

The moment he had that Liverpool game we had no chance of signing him to a new deal.

We could have signed Grounds to a longer deal initially but who's to say he'd have wanted that.

Players know when they become eligible for Bosman's (so often get a signing bonus). They get their agents to arrange contracts that suits. We tried extending Lee's deal a while before it became obvious he had Championship ability, he didn't want it. We could have sold Taylor, as mentioned. As for Forte he dropped down a level due to injuries.

Clubs like ours HAVE to let players go for nothing, it's the way of the world. All bar the top European clubs will have let a decent player go for nothing - see Sol Campbell and Spurs.

Think we all got the point. Personally cba even giving the last decade at BP much of a thought. Not exactly gonna be a decade we will wish to look back on with much fondness.

Glossop,

Your decade of wonders thread is marvellous and thanks for sharing it with us

Sorry for stoking the fires of negativity yet again but when you see some of the names mentioned and seeing how far we've fallen in that time, it's all too easy to get sucked into this terrible mindset.

Humble apologies again :imnotworthy:
