Official COVID-19 megathread

Recommended Posts

I have a severely suppressed immune system due to the raft of drugs I am on for a serious condition. The drugs keep me alive and kicking, contracting Covid-19 will be a game changer for me and not just in the footballing sense.

I meant the idea that athletes should be playing 9 games in 14 days, as if that is remotely healthy or sustainable.

I am with you on that one. I don't think it is achievable, even though we think they are a bunch of overpaid and under worked softies. :D More likely that a percentage of the games will have to be played behind closed doors.

Guess he means it'd be better getting some through the gate than none at all, if they have to play games behind closed doors..

Fair enough.  Appears to have given it SOME thought, though.  Unlike our government..

I think the Government has got it right. They are following the best and most experienced advice in the world.

I to have a suppressed immune system and heart condition. I wouldn't be attending games because of the virus anyway. That would be my choice, and for most people it apparently isn't a big deal. In fact there are people walking around with the virus who don't know they have it because the symptoms are so mild.

The Government, in a case like this, merely implement actions based on the best expert advice from the best available experts. But I guess you know better than these senior respected epidemiologists....just like Piers Morgan does and that snivelling clown like, back stabbing, shadow health minister?

Yeah, I think you might be right, having listened and read the commentary on the issue today. But who knows?  Other countries have followed different advice.

Seemed a bit of an unnecessary stick to beat Dino with, though - he was only expressing an opinion/answering a question.

The government follow the best scientific advice?

You might want to ask David Nutt about that.  How many extra have died thanks to them ignoring his advice on drugs?

The global scientific consensus on this epidemic doesn't seem to line up with whoever the UK have consulted, either.

This country has had enough of experts, remember. In many fields.

We don't always agree 😵 simply but think you are right here. Me too.

The only thing I`ll add to the debate is that I recall the scaremongerers telling us planes would fall out of the sky as a result of the "millennium bug" - turned out to be utter testicles.

Recently we've had the scaremongerers telling us that leaving Europe would be an unmitigated disaster - utter testicles.

And now the scaremongerers are having an absolute field day with "coronavirus" - and it will be utter testicles.

By all means, take sensible precautions in protecting the vulnerable sectors as best we can; as for the rest of the population, let it wash through relatively harmlessly; because guess what - it sure as hell will no matter what anyone says or does.

Oh - and doesn't it bring out the worst in the "me me" culture - horrible individuals clutching three months supply of toilet rolls - they make me puke - selfish bar stewards.

Millennium bug wasn’t a problem because a huge amount of work went into making it not a problem.

Brexit - we’re in transition. We’ve not left properly yet.

“Wash through relatively harmlessly” - 288 dead in Spain today. Biggest rise of deaths in UK today.

You really don't have a clue what's going on do you? For a start try looking up exponential growth.

Try to stop scaremongering.

UK deaths from flu in 2014/15, for example, over 28,000

Jeez if we get anywhere near that figure (we're currently at 21 I believe) you will believe that Armageddon has actually arrived. When actually, it's very normal for a virus.

Chill out man and stop stocking up on loo roll.

I don't need to look up exponential thanks.

Actually the 2014/15 flu was unusual. I think it was that year that the vaccine was wrong so wasn't very effective. If it was normal you'd have used a more recent year.

28,000 deaths over 6 months (probably more like 8 or 9). Is 153 deaths/day.

Italy is getting double that, Spain isn't far behind and the UK is likely to get those sort of numbers in the next few weeks based on all evidence and timescales.

For comparison there were 1692 deaths from flu for 2018/19 (up to mid April). Spain and Italy are likely to get that sort of number in a week from CORVID-19.

This is NOT a normal virus. If it was everyone wouldn't be panicking, football would still be going ahead and the over 70s wouldn't be likely to self-isolate for months

The stockpiling of loo roll and other items is daft though.

The UK is relatively fortunate in that a lot of similar Western countries are a few weeks further down the line. Furthermore like most viruses it is unlikely to survive very long in the sort of cold temperatures the UK can get in March.

Explain why it is not a normal virus. Symptoms are  very much like flu, some may not know they have had it. Most will recover. Hong Kong, S Korea and Taiwan have a very low mortality rate- It would seem to depend more about how Govts react to it.

The panicking and self isolation is we do not have a vaccine yet against it.

It's deadlier. Just because a lot of people are only slightly ill with it doesn't mean it's not just like the flu. If it was just like the flu it probably wouldn't be a different virus- the coronavirus family include some really nasty viruses, CORVID-19 has killed more than some of the other corona viruses (SARS and MERS) already.

Because people are not contracting the virus in the same numbers as the flu, the numbers of deaths look relatively mundane so far. This virus has a much higher mortality rate than the flu. Plus most people who get the 'flu' don't actually get Influenza they get a different virus.

Influenza doesn't bring whole hospitals and healthcare systems to its knees. CORVID-19 has been doing.

3 people have died in Crumpsall hospitals infectious diseases unit so far. People with influenza don't get seen by that specialist unit unless there is something else seriously wrong with them and they are under the care of that unit anyway.

The panicking isn't due to a lack of a vaccine. As I mentioned the flu vaccine isn't always very effective against the flu we get in the UK. The panicking is because this virus has brought whole hospitals and health care systems to its knees. The UK KNOWS its NHS is not up to fighting the virus so it's doing its best to limit the spread of the virus.

If you are fit and healthy and under 70 then CORVID-19 is going to be like a proper case of influenza for you. The rest of us will be lucky if it's that good.

Just about evey fatality here has had underlying health issues, that is why early diagnosed patients were sent to specialist/isolation units to try to contain the virus. That is now a waste of time as the cat is out of the bag.

So now you have to self isolate at home.

Any major infection will overpower the present NHS structure but the fact remains that it is a flu like virus that most people will recover from.

People are not panicking over the NHS or a lack of vaccine, they are concerned about being fed and watered despite assurances from suppliers that there is no problem. Don't condone this but don't think you can stop it either without law enforcement help.

As ever media coverage only feeds the fire.

Only time will tell if our Govt is handling it in a good or bad way.

From the Johns Hopkins Medicine site.
Bold and italics are mine...

COVID-19: Caused by one virus, the novel 2019 Coronavirus, now called severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2, or SARS-CoV-2.

Flu: Caused by any of several different types and strains of influenza viruses.

While both the flu and COVID-19 may be transmitted in similar way there is also a possible difference: COVID-19 might be spread through the airborne route, meaning that tiny droplets remaining in the air could cause disease in others even after the ill person is no longer near.

COVID-19: No vaccine is available at this time, though it is in progress.

Flu: A vaccine is available and effective to prevent some of the most dangerous types or to reduce the severity of the flu.

The COVID-19 situation is changing rapidly. Since this disease is caused by a new virus, people do not have immunity to it, and a vaccine may be many months away. Doctors and scientists are working on estimating the mortality rate of COVID-19, but at present, it is thought to be higher than that of most strains of the flu.

I don't know what constitutes "normal" in a virus but this one is new, unknown and not treatable at this moment in time.
I don't think we can regard it as normal.
