.........then we can pretend it is May and write the whole thing off once and for all knowing we will still be the longest serving team in this god awful league. That is taking it that we can scrape another ten points or so.

Who stays folks? Where is this supposed base to build upon that I have read so much about?

Why is this such a god awful league?

The squad and the stadium plans are the base to build upon because, like it or not, progression is slow process (painfully so at times) for a club with our financial situation which is trying to get stability at a higher level. Continuous squad turnover year on year hasn't worked. Keeping faith in the current managing and playing staff is the best way to go at present.

You know what, it might fail. But it is a risk I am willing to accept because constant change has repeatedly failed.

OK, squad wise here goes, and I am going to be quite brutal.

Crossley - keep as second string and GK coach.

Eardley - get rid if we can get a transfer fee, if we can't still get rid. Good tackler but dynamite in his boots, can't do the basics correctly with the ball at his feet.

Stam - mistake addled crock. Get rid.

Hazell - keep, he has been consistent other than tonights abberation, Decent footballer and made the most of his chance with us.

Gregan - undecided. I would be tempted to cut our losses if he is going to be a consistent attendee on the physios bench.

Lomax - keep. Criminally under used.

Thompson - Ha!!! Not worked out for either party, see ya!

Kalala - Garbage and talentless. A poor mans Allott any day of the week. Get rid.

Allott - player of the season so far and give him the arm band for gods sake. Keep.

Gary Mac - keep if he is in a position to play attacking centre mid. If he is going to consistently be used as the left over piece get rid he just isn't effective playing all over the place.

Lids - keep on pay as you play deal. Neds to be fitter for a contract but I would love to see him get one.

Taylor - got to sell him whilst other clubs are fooled into the fact that he may have some promise. Ring back Mr. Oyston please!!!

Livermore - not been impressed so far so send him back.

Jarrett - worth a further look but needs to prove to us and himself that he really can cut the mustard.

Hughes - as much as I dislike the moral reasons behind signing him, I would say keep if we can get him close to fitness. This season was always going to be a tough one for him physically and so it has been proved.

Davies - keep and get someone to kick his backside with a big size 11. Great prospect but needs to think about the team a little more.

Smalley & Allesandra - keep 'em both. Probably too much football this year in a debut season for Deane but great promise from them both.

Wolfy - sorry Matty, time to say goodbye. Always been on the cusp but your juniors are proving to be better prospects. Time to go.

Not much to build on there. A lot of additions needed to make that skeleton into a squad.

Lets all stay positive. In a lot of ways we have been very unlucky this season. In my opinion we are not far off being a good team when you look at the number of 1-0 defeats we have had and the games that would have been saved and won with our more experienced players around. Think what you like but the experience of Gregan and Liddell has been missed tremendously. Liddell's assists have never been replaced. Hughes being missing recently has not been helped and with a good pre-season of training I think you will see him bag a lot next year. It won't be the first or last disappointing season we have had at Boundary Park but I believe we have foundations to build upon. The younger players will be all that much better for the experience and with some of those senior players I have mentioned being around on the pitch with them I think we will see them progress much quicker.

Some interesting posts and opinions as to who should be retained. For what it is worth my own opinion is that any team needs different personalities and characters around. Gary6 McDonald is a good club man and a good squad member. I have made the case out for Liddell. The presence of Gregan speaks for itself despite the many comments about his performances before he got injured. I just wish he had been around lately because I think we would certainly be a lot higher in the league than we are.

The play off now looked doomed but I will not write them off yet until the figures don't add up.

Not like you to be so despondent Derek and I would have thought that you would have seen hope for the future. No doubt players will be brought in to improve the squad. The Club is not resigned to having an average team and continues to strive to improve things all the time. We have an ambitious board!!!!!!!!!!!

Crossley - Agree - I was very critical of him early in the season but he's proved as he's got fit that he's a very good keeper at this level. Should be thinking about utilising him as a coach more for next season though

Eardley - Keep - Think he's suffered badly from not having a decent wing man in front of him meaning more often than not he has to hoof it - and his distribution in NOT great.

Stam - Pay as you play at best

Hazell - Keep. Been very solid on the whole at CB and was looking VERY good alongside Gregan as a partnership.

Greegan - Keep him. If he's fit and has cut out the 'games' he's easily still amongst the best in this league. Needs a quick man alongside him though.

Lomax - Keep - and for gawd sake give him a run in the team

Thompson - Undecided but keep him for now. Was woeful at the start of the season but players don't become pants overnight and he was highly rated by some. Might see a different player next term.

Kalala - Release him. Offers little.

Allott - Gravy this season - Keep.

Macca - Agreed - Keep him but utilise him where he can be effective.

Liddell - One year deal at reduced terms if he can stay fit, or pay as you play. That said I think we have missed him badly this season.

Taylor - Undecided but probably keep him, but in the name of sanity, play him on the frickin right. Oh yeah, and kick him up the arse from time to time.

Livermore - Underwhelmed so far but need to see more of him.

Jarrett - Looked ace on his debut and has been decent of late (apart from last night when he looked miles off the pace to me). Keep but he needs to step it up a level.

Hughes - No brainer - get him fit with a full pre season - Keep

Davies - Keep - has the potential to be an excellent player but needs to keep listening, learning and playing for the team a bit more.

Smalley & Allesandra - Keep. If we can treat them right (blood them properly instead of throwing them in at the deep end) they both have very good potential, particularly Allesandra.

Wolfenden - Agree - nice kid, tries hard but likely to cut it now. Get rid.

Shopping list minimums

GK - New no.1

CB x 1 or 2 depending on who stays

CM - Creative ball player

LW - Genuine left winger please - and invest a few quid in the process

CF - Big target man to get on the end of all those lovely crosses that our star new LW is gonna be pinging in

RW - A genuine option to Taylor on RW - Taylor can be utilised as cover on left in needs be.

Agree with all of that keep keep the majority. I honestly think just a few players will be the difference between what we have now and promotion its not just the effect players have as individuals performance wise its what effect they have on the rest of the team. Last season Eardley had Liddell in front of him offering that experience this season he hasn't had that and he looks lost and because he hasn't got a natrual right winger infront he never plays a pass less than 20 yards long and because of that he either plays a hollywood ball or something out of the Ronnie Moore book of Hoofs.

who stays, well for me

macca stays - done enough to earn a new deal for me

crossley stays, as a coach at least

allott, player of season by country mile

hughes

davies

taylor (but play him on the fecking right please!!!!!!!!)

gregan

hazell

lomax- hope he gets used more often!!!

Who goes???

Stam: Very shaky form recently, and your guaranteed he is going to get at least one injury that will keep him out six weeks plus

Lids: Fair enough he can rack up the assists but a club our size can't afford to carry players. If he is kept, I presume it will have to be on reduced terms

Kalala: Tries his best but offers little in my opinion

Undecided

Earldey: If we get a decentish offer then sell!!!

Thompson: Unlike some on here I dont think he is a bad player at all. He has had really really bad luck with injuries whilst here, but one could also argue the move has not worked out for either party, hence dont stand in his way if he wants to go.

Who to sign?

A keeper

a targetman

a left winger

a centre half

maybe more depending on who stays and who goes

Spot on mate - however there will have to be some honest conversations when offering contracts - and Shez desperately needs to learn how to manage squad players better - take Macca, like him a lot, want him to stay - but not as a first team regular... to be honest, dont thinkw e need much more in CM - Jarrett, Allott, Macca (and even kalala) would do for me - but we need to stop this pantomime of playing Macca/Allott on the wing - Macca is back up to a first choce CM, and last 20 minutes when looking for a goal type of player....

I fele that anyne who believed Liddell has anything more to offer is sadly deluded... unless they change the rules of the game to that of Hockey, and you can make substitutions for attacking set pieces - his legs have gone... if we offer him any sort of deal after the last 3 years gravy train he has been on then he will be laughing all the way to the bank....

Agree excatly with you on who we sign - those are the priorities - sod this creative midfielder lark... lets just get some skill and pace on both wings - and with davies and Hughes up front they wont know what has hit em - sign a target man and davies can move to the wing too... and with Smalley and Ales improving weekly then that is very exciting....

We just need to tweak it... and hell, give Hughesy a pre-season to get properly fit and I reckon we could play any old plebs with him and we would still get promoted... which would suit us down to the ground...

Crossley - Keep him. He's been good since a shaky start, next season will be his last.

Eardley - Keep unless offer for £500k+ comes in. Done OK since handed captaincy but misses having someone steady in front of him (i.e. Liddell)

Hazell - No brainer. The lad's done more than enough for an extended contract.

Gregan - keeps. When fit he's a key player. Question mark on his fitness but should continue as our captain.

Stam - I'm afraid we need to replace Stam. Crocked again now and although he has the odd blinder just doesn't have the consistancy like Rubes.

Thompson - Unlucky this season after a horrific start. Was good for Tranmere and Forest but would be happy if we found a decent replacement.

Lomax - No brainer. Deserves to make left back spot his own. A new Denis Irwin in the making.

Livermore - Tricky. I think he's got quality and a decent touch. Would be preferrable in midfield where he belongs though.

Taylor - Right foot, right wing. is it too hard to ask. Keep unless a £250k+ offer came in for him.

Jarrett - looked great on his debut but has declined since. Again, shows quality on the ball and would be a good addition along with a Wellens type creator.

McDonald - far too inconsistant. I'd keep him though as a squad player, but has far too many off days to be a regular. Chips in with goals though.

Allott - Player of the season. Rarely loses the ball. Keep.

Kalala - If he's willing to be a sub most weeks, keep him. Effective at coming on and closing games down. Not someone to come on and provide a catalyst.

Liddell - Depends what he's willing to accept. year long contract on reduced terms and I'd keep. We've missed his balance and input but need him to play over 30 games a season.

Davies - Keep. Frustrates the hell out of me but a decent return this season. Needs to learn learn learn to be a Championship player though.

Hughes - Obvious quality at this level. Can see him being a bit of a crock but when he hits a purple patch theres no better poacher in this division.

Alessandra - Amazing amount of potential in him. If he keeps his head down and keep working we could see our first £1m+ player in donkeys years.

Smalley - Diamond in the rough. Flexible, tricky, speedy and gravy in the air. Again, head down, work hard keep.

Wolfy - Sorry fella. Would do a great job in Div 4, just looks a little lightweight in this league and Alessandra/Smalley are already ahead of him in the order.

Shez needs in the close season...

Keeper as understudy to Crossley but expected to be a long-term replacement. Trawl the lower leagues and perhaps pay a small fee.

Left Winger eu natural. Spend money if needed but we absolutely require a natural left winger. high priority.

Creative midfielder. Wellens/Kilkenny calibre player. Won't come cheap but a hugh priority.

Striker. Aerial threat and who's got a featherlite touch and good control. Someone like Painter or Peacock who we saw last night would be bob-on.

Centre half. I'd like Gregan/hazell to be first choice but we need back up for them. Perhaps blood Black towards the end of the season as well.

So, we didn't need too many new players in the close season providing we keep the nucleus there and strengthen with good quality additions in key areas. The money will be available to Shez but he needs to get these areas seen to and not take any more risks.

I would agree with most of that especially putting Taylor on the right, except I would keep Kalala in the squad, even though he's a limited player he breaks up play well against oppo who play their way through the centre. Good backup for Allott. If we get an attacking left winger and Jarrett proves himself worthy I think that a creative central midfielder is a luxury that we don't need. Attacking down the flanks and being solid in the middle will be good enough at this level.

I really hope we keep hold of Livermore, from what I've seen of him he looks a decent enough player but more importantly how many experienced left footed players are we going to find who can play centre back, left back, centre mid and left mid? Not many so keeping him in the squad would be essential for next year. Wolfy doesn't seem like he's going to get his chance with too many ahead of him so unfortunately, get rid.

we may have a very ambitious board, but our manager at the moment doesnt seem to share everybody elses ambitions regarding recruiting players.

i know there is difficulties regarding getting players in and sorting out contacts and so on,but we really need to be in there from the start come the summer,if people are writing off the playoffs now,i would hope our manager and his network of scouts are as we speak drawing up a hit list of potential signings, then when this season is finally done and dusted get in there first rather than messing about until the last moment.

you can point to our luck being bad,and the injuries we have had have caused us to struggle, but surely in january and now with loans players should have been brought in, instead of papering over the cracks with youngsters.yes they will benefi from first team football, but if there not ready they shouldnt have been thrown in at the deep end.

greegan and liddell will come back and give us more depth next season, but the correct mix of players needs bringing in to shore up some very shakey foundations.

i will still turn up and spend my money there, because the club is in my blood, but i know many more who wont come back again because of hollow promises from the club and manager.

I've put something similar on a different thread. All this talk of a creative CM isn't necessary, we have a decent blend in CM already - two ball-playing/hard working types to win the ball and give it simple. With wingers and an addition or 2 up front that would be enough for this division. Unless you have a player of the quality of a Wellens etc, then (in this division) it's not necessary. If you get lucky and get winger in of the physical stature of Josh Low you are really onto a winner in both boxes.

Solid centre and 4 attackers - I would'nt be suprised to see both Eardley and Taylor flourish (which I believe they can - others don't but that's fair enough) in such a system. At present it is the balance in midfield that is stiffling our attacking - Macca is not a r/s mids, cm squad player at best.

KtF,

Derek.

I've said it before, we need to build a settled squad, rather than clearing the whole lot out, year after year, otherwise escaping this division is going to be an almighty task. Unfortunately though, I don't see many players in our squad worth building around.

We've got an aged keeper, who's improved on his awful early-season form, but is clearly well past his best. Gregan's been out almost all season. Ditto Liddell. Stam is an average centre-half, even at this level, but seems to have survived for the past few years on the odd blinding performance and his good looks. Macca isn't half the player he was when he signed. Taylor is yet to refind the great form he was in during the first half of last season. Davies has talent but is so frustratingly inconsistent and sulky. JP is most likely off at the end of the season (and if you're looking at promotion he'd well and truly be a 'squad player' anyway). Thompson is bound to be off, after only a handful of games - and poor performances at that. Wolfenden has got to be close to being kicked out after never having shown the promise of a good few years ago.

The only definite ones to keep are Hazell, Hughes, Allott and Eardley (who needs to work hard on various aspects of his game), Gregan (providing he can get himself fit) and youngsters Lomax and Allesandra. That's not the greatest basis for stability of squad, is it?

Where we are now we are a long way off a settled squad.

Think it was Ferguson that said that every 3 signings made 1 will be a failure. Whoever we bring in during the summer, some will ultimately prove to be not good enough and others who's faces wont fit! Ie Ricketts Kalala.

Lets just hope Sheridan is a lucky fooker in the transfer market... his luck definitely has to change anyway!!

Omg

I cant understand this board at times.

McDonald is being played out of position.

He's our best midfielder by a mile!

Don't reply to this post just watch McDonald when he isn't in possession next game.

WTF are you guys on?
