How many gears does a football team have?
For me, Rhino has us playing for the most part, in second gear. We seem happy to concede pressure and absorb.
Then win possession, lose it cheaply, rinse and repeat.
Occasionally, we press, (or Sheron does) and / or we win a set piece and we then move up a gear and score.
Level, or with our noses in front we drop back into second gear again.
Even with a two goal lead recently, we found a way to drop down into first and somehow, we conceded two.I’m convinced there’s a fourth and fifth gear in this squad but Unsworth is at a complete loss as to how to find them.
That’s how I feel when I watch these insipid performances week after week.
Having said that, despite the performances, results trump all, for now!!Good post. Let us say for example that we got promotion at some time in the future with Dumpty Umpty (which is not going to happen) what type of football would he produce in L2, same shit, different league?

Perhaps Dumpty Umpty will play him at centre half?

He likes the pies

4-4-2 or 4-2-4 or Dumpty Umpty gets the push.

Or both!
Porter was a bloody ridiculous signing and I bet he’s on a fair wedge too!
You can throw Hope in too, can't keep him just because he runs about a lot. Puts a shift in but not that good.

Well, wide men then. Still want someone who can beat a man and cross a ball
Agreed!

442 with who playing on the wings? We haven't got 2 wingers
You don't play wingers with 4-4-2, you play wingers in 4-2-4 like Joe Royle used to do.

He said in today's Oldham Times 532 is his best option with the players he has, but can someone tell him that shouldn't mean a back 8.
That's definitely 8 at the back then, Fondop on his jack jones up front and Tollitt further left than a political wing. Don't forget about a footballers I.Q. If brains were gunpowder most of them wouldn't have enough to blow the gaiters off a battle dress budgie so stick to 4-4-2 a system most of them can cope with.

Fondop looks like he’s benefited from what must be one to one coaching with Jeffers. (Due to injuries)So many of the squad have league experience, I genuinely don’t think it’s that bad. What doesn’t help- is playing 5 at the back and one up top, which is a defensive set up in anyones book, and will lead to more of the same type of performance’s in my view.
Just on the squad and tactics- do you think if and when new players arrive. Unsy will change the formation and we’ll suddenly become more attacking with better players? Personally I don’t, I think he’ll set up the same- with similar results.
Agree that Fondop will benefit with coaching from Jeffers but he needs to be more mobile and less like a post box. What he would benefit more from is somebody playing along side him and I don't mean wide, I mean more like Frankie and Stitch used to play, one off the other.
As for formation, with this squad it has to be 4-4-2.

Don’t we count the straightforward headers that Sheron and the lad from Stoke missed then? Or the fumbles from the Chester keeper on to the woodwork?
Btw , did Norman have a shot to save in the first half?
No I'm obviously not.

On chances created yesterday it should have finished 5-1 to Chester, funny really as that was the Latics formation, I'm not counting midfield as we didn't have one. Every throw in we won went backwards and usually ended up with Norman who then rolled it to Maynard who then passed it sideways for someone to hoof up to Fondop who moved like a mobility scooter on a cobbled street. Lost the ball as he was on his own and when Chester had the ball we never at any time pressed or won the ball back. It was a shambles from start to finish, shite tactics and formation and to add insult to injury, Burgess (who should be playing for the under 12's) was added to the debacle.

Perhaps you've had worms for the past 56 years?

Totally agree, I think we looked a far better team once we took Cooper off on Tuesday, I'd like to see us play a 4-3-3, all our full backs struggle in a wing back role with none of them offering much going forward, a midfield three of Sheron holding with Gardner and Rooney just in front would work, of the players we've got available I'd play Tollitt and Burgess either side of Fondop, if we play a 10 behind a front two it has to be Vaughan for me but it's not going to happen, playing a back four just makes more sense with the players we have Carragher and Okagbue both love to defend, get caught out at times but that's going to happen, Clarke is a better player in a back four and Angol would slot in at left back.
4-4-2 with these players but Gardner plays sideways and too deep and the boy child Burgess couldn't beat a carpet so get rid of both.

Carl Winchester [Sunderland - Shrewsbury] Loan
Wow, I'm surprised it took so long for Sunderland to find out that the championship was way above Winchesters level, poor Shrewsbury.

Eric Cantona at Man United when here was a bit special
Peter Beardsley also took us apart.
Neither of whom could pass the ball as well as those previously mentioned.

Alan Groves-excellent, Simon Stainrod-brilliant, Bobby Johnstone- outstanding. The first player I saw at Latics who reminded me of Bobby Johnstone by passing the ball to a forward fast enough to beat the offside trap on a consistent basis was Ozzie Ardiles when we played Spurs in the cup. The next was John Sheridan, not seen one since.

I think we’ll go into admin at some point, and we’ll be relegated again. The false hope (that we can compete under AL) isn’t credible for me, and while I don’t want the above to happen, I think it’s inevitable and more importantly- perversely necessary.
Shahed’s interview only reinforced this in my mind.
Talking to an ex Latics manager last week and he seems to think we will be relegated again, didn't give me any specific reason why though.

Final word on permitted substitutes - EFL regulations stipulate a maximum of 3 plus up to 2 ‘concussion’ subs allowed.
Could we claim that a couple of ours were concussed before they came on?

Ah yes, Humble Pie with the excellent Steve Marriott and Peter Frampton. I seem to remember that they only had one hit though.
