  1. I think it would be pretty obvious if Phillips is left out tomorrow that he isn't in Shez's plans....agreed?

Shez says on Latics Wold (bradford preview) that he's ''still trying to sort something out with Del'' so i still think he's in his plans! he also mentions he's still after a left back OR someone to give him ballance on the left hand side, so maybe its a choice between phillips or a left back??

  2. I have watched the Masters again after recording it, and after an amazingly loud rendition of "Ernie for England", the commentator (Gary Weaver) said that we were singing "Philly for England". What kind of horrible bskyb pi55 poor research is that?

I was watching it live on sky last night and said exactly the same thing to my dad, ''Ernie for England'' was loud and clear (as was every other chant by our fans) and then the commentator got it completely wrong! Just Disrespectful!

  3. I'd feel a bit more reassured if we'd got the Phillips deal sown up. At the moment we seem to be saying very loudly in the press 'this lad's dead good but we haven't made our minds up yet'

I'm not sure what it's saying to the lad but I bet there's a couple of lower championship/ higher League one scouts having a nosey tonight.

If you look at the BBC League One page almost every manager is quoted as saying 'I need a left winger'

Paul Jewell's bin saying for the last few weeks he's after a wide player (dont know if he wants right or left) but if phillips has a blinder tonight i wouldnt be suprised if he shows an interest!

  4. After having a quick glance on a couple of their boards, the Gillingham fans are mostly against the signing of Maher, a few comments are:

    Gills Fans Views

''He hasn't shone in a Gills shirt''

''Last season i found Maher to be slow, with a tendency to give the ball away far too often''

''Maybe in League 2 he'll flourish but I have to say there was only one game I saw, possibly Swansea, where I thought he had a decent game''

''A very mediocre player with no pace. Did not impress me in the least.''

''I wasn't impressed by Maher. Got himself sent off. Hardly lit up the games he played and like others I would rather we had signed Cullip.''

Read into that what you will, a player could be cack in one team and a move can do them good. Gillingham were in a relegation scrap last year and he might shine in a team pushing for promotion. anyway, i thought he cant be as bad as they are making out, so i decided to look on Southend’s forums

    Southends fans views

''IMO tilly needs a different type of midfielder seeing as we lost our most creative players in Maher and Gower''

''We don't appear to have a holding midfield player, Maher would have been an excellent choice if we'd offered him a contract''

''(talking about the diamond formation) the defensive midfielder is normally the 'destroyer' and the guy further forward the creator...This formation would be best employed with Maher! Come back Kev, He could have done both!''

''I would be very surprised if he drops down to league 2. He's still a class act in my eyes''

So they seem to think he could still do a job at this level, they think they will miss his experience and leadership/presence most. A couple of points i did pick up were they don’t think he will sign for a northern club, they said he wont travel and up-root his family, and also he was the top earner at southend (which will be what, 6-7k pw?) so he will have to be offered a fair whack to come up here anyway!

  5. The good news is ... there's only three weeks 'til the season kicks off

Bad news is its still three weeks until the season kicks off

The Good News Is.... First Pre Season Match Tonight

Bad news is its in Rhyl while Rochdale get to play theirs in Marbella

The good news is we can drive to Rhyl without a passport.

The bad news is Neal Eardley will need a lift off someone.

Good news ...... He will bring the beer for the passengers

The bad news is, he is the passenger.

The good news is we have Mark Allott in midfield.

The bad news is we have a couple of area of the field need strengthening

The good news, I have complete faith that Shez has learnt a lot from last season

The bad news is taylor will still play on the wrong side

The good news is we have signed a keeper

The bad news is Scottish keepers are dodgy

The good news is he cant be as dodgy as some previous keepers

The Bad news is that Crossley will break the Subs bench

The good news is - we've bought a longer subs bench

The Bad news is, we will have to buy an even longer one, as we will have a fully fit squad and the new 7 subs rule

  6. Any suggestions as to who could be filling these positions?

Aye... Robbie Threlfall plays left back, can also play left wing and centre back. Was on loan at hereford last season, has played for england under 19's. Rafa Benitez says he can go out on loan again this season, and with having that roque lad on loan a cpl of seasons back, maybe something could be done.

REDS STARLET SET FOR LOAN MOVE

By Peter O'Rourke Last updated: 14th July 2008

Liverpool starlet Robbie Threlfall is set for a loan move away from Anfield as Rafa Benitez looks for him to gain valuable first team experience.

The 19-year-old full-back is highly regarded at Anfield having come through the youth ranks and recently signed a three-year deal at the club.

Threlfall had a spell with Hereford last season and Benitez is keen to send him out on loan again as he continues his policy of farming out his best young players to aid their development.

The Reds have made the talented left-back available for loan and the news has alerted a number of clubs north and south of the border.

A couple of League One sides and SPL clubs are believed to be tracking the defender as they look to secure his services.

Threlfall is looking forward to the chance of moving out on loan as he looks to get regular action under his belt.

    Excited

"I believe going out on loan will prove a valuable experience in my bid to establish myself in the Liverpool first team in the future."

"I have been informed that Liverpool are willing to let me go out on loan and I am relishing the prospect of playing on a regular basis," Threlfall told skysports.com.

"I am aware of some interest in me and I am prepared to go anywhere to continue my development."

sounds very similar to the bertrand deal we had last season, a year at a lower league club, possible step up to league 1, then to championship/premiership, maybe we could be one of those interested clubs?

  7. In the light of the Trotman deal, something very similar.

Exactly, that’s got to be the minimum benchmark now for any of our young talent being poached away! I really rate Smalley, as i do all our young prospects, however if the sale (AT THE RIGHT PRICE) of one of these youngsters a season means the club continues to survive and hopefully progress, then so be it. Disappointing yes, but you have to think of the future of the club.

However Sheff Utd have 7 strikers on the books already?

As said earlier, Philliskirk has to be given credit, and a good contract (whenever its up) or he will be the next one to be poached away!

  8. Have I missed a signing here?

Lomax in the starting line-up and some other Lomax as a potential benchwarmer!!!

so if we do bring in a new left back .........we'd have to pick 5/7 subs from:

    fleming

    bell

    lomax

    black

    stam

    thompson

    kalala/and or new CM

    o'grady

    liddle

    stephens

    smalley

    allesandra

    williams(if fit and ready)

    (any i'v missed out?)

    Good Times! :comeon:

  9. At this moment in time (before shez brings anyone else in)

    Crossley

    Eardley -- Gregan -- Hazell -- Lomax

Lee -- Allott -- Whitaker --Taylor

    Hughes -- Davies

I think Crossley will start the season as number one, and we will see Fleming more towards the mid/end of the season (although he does look quite good from the vid on LW) shez says he wants a left sided player to balance the team, I think this will be a left back because, although we have lomax and black, ones right footed, and the other has no experience at all. Where as in the left midfield position we have taylor who's played there for a few years, whitaker and lee who could do a job, and even o'grady and davies if needed! The good thing is, theres so much depth already this year, theres so many different formations we could use and switch to if the games arne't going our way.

so if we do bring in a new left back (and CM if kalala goes) we'd have to pick 5/7 subs from:

    fleming

    bell

    lomax

    black

    stam

    thompson

    kalala/and or new CM

    o'grady

    liddle

    stephens

    smalley

    allesandra

    williams(if fit and ready)

    (any i'v missed out?)

    Good Times! :comeon:

  10. just found another interesting bit on the same manure forum as before:

    a) ''Just woundering about Danny Philliskirk whos at Chelski, did he play for our youth setup and was released? or am i wrongly informed?''

b.) ''he was on trial with us (from oldham) for a while last season''

    a) ''are we letting Chelski snap up a talent from Oldham?''

b.) ''I watched him (philliskirk) a few times and although he was tidy, remember we also had David Williams at the time and he was scoring for fun, I wouldn't say we have let him slip through the net, we just had better options i.e David Williams''

And how much did we get for philliskirk? it does seem like this Williams has bags of potential, lets hope our coaching staff can get the best out of him, and we will have another little gem on our hands!!

  11. Nope not a car this time folks, however your input could influence the design of next club scarf and be wrapped around your neck for Xmas!

OK whats required...... both upper and lower edges of the scarf (long ways) have the capability to have two lines of writing along them, with a broad middle section saying, say Oldham Athletic. What Lois has in mind is to utilize both upper and lower edges for the words of two Latics chants (one chant for each edge)....have I painted the right picture folks? Lois wants the chants to be associated with Latics obviously.

The one I suggested would be 'keep the blue flag flying high'

Anyway, what I thought was as this thread develops and chants are nominated, a mod then runs a vote with say the top 4 chants.

its gotta have ''oh when the blueessssss'' on it! it would promote the clubs official message board then as well!

  12. Just having a quick look on some of the Manure boards... a few comments are:

''Dave was an excellent player for the U/16's and after watching him over the last two seasons would have walked into the U/18's ''

''I agree, could score for fun and plays as an attacking midfielder too! unlucky to be released''

sounds like there’s some potential there, lets hope he can get fit and progress this season!!

  13. Is Judith the only lady that works at the ticket office? Only as somebody said before, the few dealings I’ve had (not many), whatever my query has been, seems to be the biggest inconvenience to be sorted out. And any questions I’ve asked have been answered in the way that I should have known the answer in the first place?

In no way is this a dig at the staff, as I appreciate that they work hard and are dealing with people all day every day, either on the phone/shop/ticket office, but I just found it interesting how different my experiences have been compared to most other peoples.

  14. Andy Welsh may be the other.

found an interesting article on Andy Welsh from his toronto days:

    So long, Andy Welsh

    Wednesday, September 5, 2007

Last week, Toronto FC coach Mo Johnston admitted he made a mistake and transferred Scottish winger to English club Blackpool.

Why, exactly, Blackpool contacted Toronto FC about acquiring Welsh remains a mystery, but thank God they did because it gave Johnston the perfect excuse to ship Welsh out of town.

If only Blackpool could have came calling way back in May – it was obvious then, even after only a few games for Toronto, that Welsh was a terrible player – it would have saved the expansion franchise a lot of headaches.

Welsh was touted one of coach Johnston's "big" signings prior to the season, but the 23-year-old left winger failed to impress during his stint in MLS.

Welsh's lack of offensive production (he had only one goal) and his ineffective play were compounded by the fact he earned more than $200,000 (roughly 10 per cent of the team's salary cap) and was the fourth-highest-paid player on the squad.

From watching him play, it appeared as though Welsh was allergic to getting "stuck in" and tackling opposing players to try to strip them of possession. Instead, he routinely impersonated a turnstile on the field, letting opponents dribble right by him without so much as throwing out a leg to try to stop them.

The Scot has great speed and pace but he didn't use it effectively. Whenever he bombed down the wing, nine times out of 10 it didn't lead to anything because he couldn't beat that last defender. He either coughed up the ball or was stopped dead in his tracks.

As for being able to deliver a cross into the middle like any decent winger can do, Welsh wasn't up to the task. The Scot's delivery was woefully inadequate. He either hit the ball over the head of teammates, hung it up so the goalkeeper could easily pick it out of the air, or failed to even get past the first defender inside the box.

Welsh not only became the whipping boy of angry fans in internet chat rooms, but he was a comical figure among journalists in the press box at BMO Field, who routinely ran informal betting pools as to when he would be substituted out of a game or when he would make his first of many useless runs down the wing.

Aside from being untalented, Welsh was also a malcontent and sulked about being dropped from the team's starting lineup back in July, even when the team was decimated by injuries to five starters. He let it be known he wasn't happy about his reduced playing time, clearly oblivious to the fact he had no business being on the field to begin with.

Welsh apologists, and there are plenty of them out there, pointed to his work ethic as a reason why he belonged on the team.

But what does it say about Welsh that no other MLS club picked him up (teams had 48 hours to pick him off the waiver wire before he could make his move to England) and Blackpool didn't even pay a transfer fee for the Scot?

Not a single dollar changed hands between the clubs, as Blackpool received Welsh for free – which still means the English club overpaid for him.

  15. i think he's a good back-up player, but he must be on a decent wage. Yeovil offered him a fresh deal, which he turned down to come to us! if he is one of the bigger earners, it might be the reason why he has'nt moved on yet (no one will want to match his wages, and he wont want to take a pay-cut)
