  1. Not at all - I think a new stadium is a must. If it follows the plans submitted I think it will be a very attractive stadium. Naturally I will make a point of travelling up the night before to watch the last home game at BP and no doubt at the end of the match I will be as emotional as everyone else who has been brought up watching football at every level played there. I was told by my father that he had me on his shoulders when Oldham beat Southport 11-0 but I was an egg then so i dont recall it. I think I became a diehard when we beat Huddersfield 6-0 at BP many many years but before that I endured a 1-1 draw against Scarboro when they were a Northern Premier League side. We lost 1-2 in the replay. We will all have our stories and fave games and be able to recount annecdotes from days gone by - During those heady days when we were on the rise I can well remember Joe and the players in the pub at the top of Sheepfoot Lane happilly sharing a pint with fans after the game. I recall Andy barlow making the mistake of going into the Clayton Arms after we won the Div 2 Title -- His feet never touched the ground as he was hoisted up and passed over everones heads like a human mexican wave. Buggar I will be reaching for the Kleenex next . Boundary Park has been our spiritual home but just like the old car that we drove for years and kept having to spend money on it to keep it going we need to move on, Embrace the new stadium and hope that with it comes a new begining and that those that pack the ground - As I am sure they will for the first game - come more often.
  2. Its a 530 mile round trip for me to go to BP and a cost of around £100 for fuel and ferry... Add on food, gate money, programme and the trip to the club shop and I dont get way with less than £160. So no I cant afford to get to every home game - I have done just two this season plus a couple of away games. Does four games make me a supporter? Prob not in some peoples eyes. But then I have been following latics man and boy and when I didnt work in Sales and had every weekend off I went to far more games. In the season we reached the league cup final and the FA Cup Semi Final it cost me a fortune ...I did every round in both cups except three games ( Leeds 2nd leg of the Littlewoods Cup, Everton FA Cup Replay and Man Un ited FA Cup Semi Final replay). Plus of course many many league matches. Even put the house on the IOW on the market with a view to moving to Saddleworth/Uppermill area so we could not only cash in on the house price North/South difference but watch latics week in week out. It didnt sell but over the years both my daughters have been mascot for latics. Pride of place is a photo of my daughter Simone in her red Bovis kit in the centre circle with Nick Henry and Ray Wilkins at QPR where we won 3-1. Now my grandson is preparing for his first game on 27th March at St Marys stadium Southampton. One day god willing he will run out with latics wearing his mums Bovis kit. To be honest I am realistic enough to know that those heady days of top flight football are long gone but, it dont matter if we are a championship side, a div one, div two or god forbid a Conference side, this family will ALWAYS be latics fans, supporters, customers or whatever you want to call us exiles. I have been to Workington and watched latics, I have been to Wembley and watched latics and which ever direction we go my loyalty while tested will always be there. Oldham are part of my life and woven into my family
  3. While of course its their right, I think its pretty pathetic for people to say they would stop following the club if they changed the name. Many clubs have changed or altered their club name over the years and to me its not a problem as longs as Oldham is the prefix. Maybe as a mark of respect to Failsworth we should become Oldham Dynamo? ....But then maybe not. My car number plate (OL04HAM) wont be affected. I dont care if they are called Inter Real Oldham and Failworth Dynamo Athletic North End. I know they are my Athletic and, whatever is decided, I will continue lemming like to follow the blues Hmmm as Failwoth is just as you have just come into Oldham then maybe thats it!!!! INTER OLDHAM
  4. After all this time I just wish the club and the council could get together and actually resolve the matter. I often wonder whether the council actually gives a stuff about OAFC. It sure as hell has screwed the rugby club so we shouldn't be surprised if the same happens to us. Personally as someone who does a 500 mile round trip for a home game it don't matter to me where the ground is as long as its within the boundary of Oldham. Makes me vomit at the thought we could end up in a Manc postal area. During a period of high unemployment you would think the council would be doing everything to support and promote the idea of a new stadium - After all it would provide a lot of work for a lot of people for at least a couple of years.
  5. Happens every season...One of the three that go up will sniff around the lower leagues and try and give as little as they can for a club's best player But as we all know...If the situation was reversed we would do the same. To be honest IF a bid of £700k plus came in then it would be realistic to accept the bid providing there were appearance and sell on bonuses. One would hope that DP would be allowed to use most of the funds to strengthen the team....but I wouldn't hold my breath I am surprised Birmingham haven't joined the vultures that have descended on Southampton there are one or two bargains to be had and more than a couple of players no longer committed to the club......
  6. I knew when I managed to go to work today with matching socks and the wife actually smiled at me there was something spooky going on....Now I am REALLY spooked because I find myself in total agreement with Coco !!!! ....I am actually on the point in thinking that hes looking forward to next season feeling really positive and eager to renew his season ticket..... Matches Won Drawn Lost Win % Doncaster Rovers 22 April 2000 - 31 May 2000 6 4 1 1 66.7 Doncaster Rovers 27 Dec 2001 - 30 Aug 2006 241 114 62 65 47.3 Darlington 30 Oct 2006 - 30 April 2009 139 60 35 44 43.2 Wikipedia has DP already installed as Oldham Manager as of 30th April. I have had a look on various forums and theres nothing but praise about him from Donny and Darlo.....As his record shows hes not done bad at all so far in his career and I am optimistic that at last we may have found a man who will do a decent job. ... Lets hope he instills some pride and passion on the pitch which has been so lacking in recent history.......
  7. Southampton are going to do nothing next season ok lets put that one to bed. IF they manage to survive the close season they start minus 10 points. Already players are looking for other clubs and there has already been an approch to the Conference to see if the club can join in the event of them losing their league place. The club is in total chaos and any idea of a take over or new buyers on the horizon are being laughed at down here. The whole fabric of the club and its financial affairs have already put off the one serious investor. Its absolute nonesense to suggest that they will be up there challenging for an instant return to the championship. Charlton and Norwich will hope for a quick return and Charton for sure are in a healthy finaincial position so I believe. Norwich - Well a friend from Walsham (Norwich City catchment area) reckons that the purse is tight and that while they have sold a lot of season tickets its nowhere near 18k. It really depends on how many players they have to let go or how many will jump ship.
  8. NEW MILLS OMGGGGG I hope its not a night match ...If its a Saturday I will catch the 6am ferry and I am sure I can fill the car with friends keen to make the trip up - Do you think it will be all ticket ?
  9. 100% agree ... If JR isnt given what he believes he needs then its going to be grim .
  10. do we get to vote who goes next ....hahahahahaha so freakin funny
  11. Great bit of club history.....But I bet there were times today when you had run out of finger and toes nails, your pulse was 100 over and your bood pressure was so high your skin was begining to melt.... Good job you had that 19 point lead because I think you would have struggled to make it through the playoffs....
  12. Can only assume its confirmation that JR is taking the job or a long shot theres some investment in the club... Cant see Gordy putting up flags for bad news....we can only bite our nails and wait and see.....
  13. That does come to mind...I also remember when the chad was packed out for the West Ham Littlewoods QF 1st leg. It was really risky and along with another guy we insisted the stewards unlock the Lookers Paddock fence so we could go in there instead. I fairness to the police it was them who inisted the steward do just that and several people breathed a sigh of relief when the gate was opened and more space created
  14. That is so right..... Its ok to get mr billy 25 goals a season on board but if hes a nutter or doesent get on with people then hes a wild cannon and a bad influence in the dressing room. If you can interview a player and find out what hes like as a person then you may find its better to go for a player that bangs in only 15 goals a season but is a great influence on his team mates and contributes a lot more . There are so many players that are remember for being great and having inspired their teams. Players who have motivated others to perform at a higher level.
  15. IF we had wone the majority of the last 10 games and been looking forward to the play offs or promotion then this thread of course would be so different and it would all be one long buzz of praise... Instead because we havent its full of moans and blame for the position is being thrown around all over. Excuse me but didnt we just take back JR.....is he not trying players out and in the very early days of restructuring the playing side.....Did you expect a magic wand? Did you think you would wake up the day after the morning of the Tranmere game and think ''great thats promotion assured'' I am sorry but several of you including Corporal seem to have amnesia ....with regard to gate sof 18-20,000 I do belive that was in the premiership days .....as far as I recall the gates when we were old Div2 were around 11/12000.....you have to go back to the late 50s when football was an inexpensive pastime for the working masses to see the gates on a regular basis Corporal was talking about. We are in a transitional period we have a new Manager and players will come and go....there is no quick fix solution. I do not believe Corney and co are about to jump ship and I do believe that with JR in command we will see a return to the kind of football we used to enjoy. Anyone who thinks there have not been worst times in our history than now needs to read the club history a bit more. Can we get back to the Championship - Of course we can, we are in a better postition thena many clubs. The way people talk you would think we had been relegated. The poor run of results lead to Shezzes sacking and the appointment of a new Manager. This manager has his own idea and will need time to put them into operation and reap the benefits. JR has a record of turning very average players into good ones and has contacts and friends withing the game that will feed us players from time to time. We are suffering from past administration and we need a reality check here -- It is only a couple of summers ago that we were about to fold. We are not, we are here. We need to continue to back the team, embrace the change in management and see what unfolds in the summer and new season
  16. I think its ruddy arrogant and dispresspectful of a manager to field a eakend team in the worlds oldest and most famous cup competition.... Not that i want to ruin the thread .....did u know that the most valuable trophy in the world is the Isle of Wight Gold Cup? made out of solid gold and given by sheik god knows who years ago its made of solid gold and never leaves its safe...a replica is presented each season to the winning IOW team... Im surprised Flapping fergie hasnt entered a team in it
  17. I think that could be the case ...Im open to that but I still think his big failure was not keeping a distance from the players ....was in the players lounge so many years ago and the players were there and Joe was talking with Mr Brierly ..Earl Barret needed to pass by and I heard him say ''Excuse me Mr Royal'' I almost fell over -- I couldnt see a player being as respectful to Shez hahaha
  18. Let me know an account number Ruth and I will be pleased to sponsor you via my own bank and good luck
  19. For your information Coco I attend around 25% of the games each season ok...and I have followed latics since I was about 10 years old and lived in Middleton. When I cant attend games due to cost or work committments then I follow them from home. Both my kids have been mascot for the club and if you tot up about 15 ferry fares, petrol for a trip of up to 600 miles return plus all the other costs I bet it adds up to a damn sight more than what you spend out. Just because you live a 5 minute bus ride away does not make you a better of more credent supporter than myself ok. What really :censored:s me off is people like you who come on the forums and moan their freaking arse off day in and day out without having anything constructive to say ...Its just one long moan. If you really are fed up with the club then stop going. As I have said many do just do that and they show they walk away - What also pisses me right off is when due to my location if we are having a good run and a cup game comes up and its all ticket they all come flocking back and its a ruddy struggle for me to get a ticket cos the ''Good time Charlies'' are in the Q proclaiming their die hard allegence. And I am not defining Nik as a fairweather fan by any means Im just sad that he thinks hes had enough Its times like this that the fans need to get behind the club not run away. I do not agree that the good times cannot come back. When JR first came to Boundary park Stottys first instructions were to sell players, there was no transfer fund and to fold the youth team. The first few seasons he was in charge lets be honest he didnt set the world alight but he DID create an infrastructure that was fruitful and a youth set up that was the envy of many top flight clubs. Who says he cant do it again ? - Do you think hes forgotten how to ride the bike. I have said before that so much damage has been done that it may take 2/3 seasons to get it right and for us to be moving in the right direction. I myself will continue to attend as many games as I can afford to - And buy what I can afford from the club shop even if its mail order. I just hope that the die hards will stick it out and give JR a chance to do something I remember just prior to the great cup runs we had when we reached the semi final of the FA Cup and League cup final how average the gates were - As we progressed it became harder to get tickets. Bolton in the FA cup Quarter Final. Man United in the Semi Final. Southampton and West Ham in the Littlewoods Cup were particularly hard for fans like me to get tickets while the one game a season fans lined sheepfoot lane. You say you are not goong to bother next season Coco then great .... if we DO get a decent cup run going (and ok we probably wont) I take it then you wont be running down to get a ticket...?
  20. Excellent response. For me Sheridan failed because he failed to manage - I look back on the players he had and there were certainly enough that were good enough to get us promoted. He without doubt also made a few errors of judgement too but he had the backing of the board and, for a long long while the backing of the fans. However, Mr Sheridan was not Mr Sheridan he was ''Shez'' from all accounts and from everything I have heard and when I have heard players speak to him it seems to me that he could not make that real transition from player to Manager. He remained ''One of the lads'' If you do not distance yourself from the team then you do not get their respect and therefore its very difficult to invoke on the pitch what you want to achieve in your head. I think its always difficult when you play in a team then, become the manager, to then have to tell the guys you used to have a beer with that they were getting dropped, going to play in a different position, going on loan or even being released. How many players that were performing below par kept their places in the team because they were close mates of Sheridan, I dont know but its conceivable that happened at times. Your first day as a Manager should be to call the whole squad in and spell out the status quo - I really dont believe that was ever done. ''I am now not your team mate I am your Manager, there are going to be a few changes to the way we play, that may well piss some off you off but its not personal, its just the way things need to be'' would have been a good opening statement. I think it was more like ''Ok lads, on the pitch lets have a good work out and then we can all have a pint'' I think in years to come Shez will look back and think (like many of us do about our working lives) If only I knew then what I knew now. I do think he will be a good manager and in a new club where he doesent know the players then he will have the opportunity to invoke his style and ideas while keeping that one step away
  21. Naturally due to my location I cannot attend every home game but lets see.... Six home games this season and seven away x admission+ car Ferry fares and petrol Five home games last season and nine away games x Admission + car ferry and petrol Seven home games and nine away games the season before x Admission + car ferry and petrol Plus food and programmes and about eight games where I took my daughter. Hmmm Thats a few quid I think Will I claim.........hahaha naw I dont think so I have got hardened to it now On a serious note.....If just one of those Cottbus fans was to claim a refund I would insist that their names were published in the next matchday programme. Very honourable of the club to make the guesture .....very pathetic of their fans if they take up the offer
  22. Whatever happens I do believe the sound of diggers and bulldozers will be deafening and I am not talking about the ground here
  23. Hahahahaha I laughed my ass off when I read that -- Talk about not checking before posting. While fickle fans desert the club from far away places such as Royton, Chadderton, Middleton and Shaw there will always be latics fans all over the country and even the world keeping the faith
  24. You know what? I was going to edit my last post and correct the mistakes in text but I just cannot be arsed...
  25. Agree with a lot you say Oldhamathleticmad.... I agree with Coco I think there are many that wont be back next season..... They of course will be back if we start to do well and should we go up next season or the season after he and the rest of them will proclaim that they are die hard latics fans who have followed the team through thick and thin.....Which of course is bollox. When you compare the likes of the Coco's of this world with the likes of the Torquay fans that I often see on the road travelling North, me to Boundary Park, them to places like Altrincham, Northwich, Mansfield, Barrow etc its then you see what being a true supporter of your club is about. Over my life watching Oldham I have seen us beaten by none league sides in the cup, seen us play in front of less than a 1000 fans and I am sure like others I recall being a little boy biting my nails on the verge of tears praying that my 4th division team wouldnt go bust. The things the Coco's of this world can be found at several clubs around the country. The suns shines its too hot, it rains they moan that thers no sun. They moan cos they are starving then they moan that the food isnt good enough. They get promoted at work then compalin about the increased workload. A true supporter sticks with his team whatever and no matter how deppresssing the currrent state of affairs. We look forward to next season and hope for better things and remain eternally optimistic. Just like you fight with your sibling and go three days without talking, you love em still and defend them against all attackers? ...Why? because they are your blood, they are part of you. Like many others on here Latics are part of me, they have given me so much joy in years gone by and so many happy times are as a direct result of them being there. Yes even when we have lost 0-5 and its been pissing down in Oxford, they wouldnt let me and the kids in the supporters lounge until some of our lads went in and Andy Rhodes said...''Its ok mate they are with us'' - Pricless look on the doorman's face You dont desert your team when it needs you -- well some do and I guess you are just one of several that will, and then you will come running back the moment we start to acheive something. One poster in another thread said that he believed that we have the worst fans in the league for turning on their team when things are bad. I am not sure about that but, what I do see is that we have more than one Coco and the sooner they all do the walk and not the talk and get the hell out of Boundary Park the better. My grandson age three will attend his first game next season and if it goes well he will clock up a few games each season. There will always be a new generation of latics fans coming through to replace the fairweather fans that drift off. Bye Nik yeah go on save your money spend the day with Coco and the others in the pub and spend saturdays moaning about the club there not here. I understand your fustration Nik but I am sad that you feel so bad about the team that you are so willing to give up your support. I am a latics fan and so are my kids and so will my Grandson be...we will always follow our club no matter where we live, no matter what level of football we play......Thank god there are still a lot more who feel the same way.
