One of my jobs is a Youth Worker for Oldham Council. Part of it involves playing Pro Evo, Pool, Wii, Table Football, and lots more. Fun and educational!

I've got a decent job, with a decent wage, however I've been looking to get into the Police - been working my fitness for the last 18 months, I probably stand a good chance to be honest. We'll have to see.

Too much paperwork

Too much PC

Not enough money

Plusss..... What if you have to work saturday?

Upto you, but i wouldn't do that job, thankless!

Joined the specials for an insight, I suggest you do this as it is a good grounding and basic training, had to pack in due to relocation, but I didnt realise how much they are hated by the binge drinking public of this country.

Blackpool on a Saturday night sober is a real eye opener, but the ladies love it.

PM me if you want any more info.

The fitness aspect of it wouldn't be my main concern.

I applied a few years ago but didnt even get passed the application stage. Same has happened to quite a few of my mates.

The main issue is that GMP is pretty oversubscribed with applications. If you do want to get in then I would recommend going down the special constable route or even getting a job as a community support officer first. Even on a basic level doing general voluntary work. It's about setting yourself apart from the other applicants.

If your present job has involvement with the community then that's always a good one. One particular job that goes down well for example is a pub landlord (obviously one who can run it in a good manner).

Personally, I never see the attraction in the police but good luck anyway.

Good on ya. I need to do the same soon.....im in grave danger of getting a decent pay rise and as a result getting snaffled up in this office job business (quantity surveying) and having a 'career'. Whoopee f*****g do! Not for me im also handing my notice in soon.

I fancy this football coaching in the U.S my mate recently got back from 6 months there said it was awesome mainly coaching girls! And he's come back twice as good a player. Another option is the summer in Ibiza earning a pittance but having a laugh....or maybe a season shredding in the alps (or the New Zealand winter sports season is our summer)....the options are endless all I know is there are much better, more interesting places in the world than offices in Oldham/Manchester.

Preach over!

Are you sure you would cope with the arbitrary power that comes with the job Matt?

I applied around 6 months ago and failed on the 6 hour assessment day. There are 7 key areas (core competencies) you need to have nailed on:

Respect for race and diversity

Team working

Problem solving

Effective communication

Personal Responsibility

Resilience

Customer and community focus.

You have to get 60% in each of those areas to pass through to the fitness stage and final interview. The problem i found was that it is a terrible way of selecting whether someone is appropriate or not for police. There is a systematic way of marking individuals and they simply tick boxes if you say the right things. They gain no insight into your personality and anyone could parrot revise what they want to hear and get through but not believe any of it.

My Mrs has just got her date through for when she starts her training in August, but i have well and truely been put off recently i wouldn't want to do what they have to. The scum of society don't respect them, youth don't respect them, and they are losing respect from the average joes because they arnet on the street doing what they should, but instead filling in unneccessary paper work.

I have turned to more business minded attitude at the moment, the money i want to be making in my career wont come through the police (plus i don't think i could carry out actions and follow policies/laws that i don't necessarilly agree with) Having a set target number of serious and petty crime arrests each week is ridiculous....a good and rewarding career but it aint for me.

i once worked for a company that supplied 'manpower' to events at places like olympia and earls court etc...

the one i did was the wine show!

awesome!!!

me and my mate had a dustbin on casters that we took round all the stands and supplied them with ice all day... we got caught slugging a few glasses here and there, so a kindly 'rep' took us aside and showed us how to do the ol' sniff, twirl then spit routine that wine tasters do!! we simply forgot to spit it out...

i don't think i've been so wrecked in my whole life... the best bit being that we took an extra waggon with us on the last day... (a tip from our friend again!!) and got to take home all the stuff the traders didn't want to take back to the vineyards/distilleries etc etc.....

the three waggons heading back to oxfordshire we're a bit like the pick up in the old 4X advert!!

oh yeah, and we got about £30 a day too, fed aswell.... all cash in hand!!! great job that!!

You will lose all your friends & no one will trust you.

You will then be detailed to a football hit squad and have to watch the game with your back to the pitch (not a bad thing if you are on taylors side of the pitch!).

A promotion will follow and you will turn into PC Devine, watching crowds walk past your yellow video unit van with a thousand yard stare.

You will retire on a big pension and become a bad tempered steward to feed your need to wear a hi-vis jacket and to persecute teenagers for standing up at the game.

Don't do it mate  .

Derek.

PC Devine? Surely not, he is loved by all and he is my best freind.

Now....Who was it who had me thrown out of Donny and lost me the chance to be the England mascot at the world cup? His name seems to have escaped me.

I was going to join the police about 5 years ago, but my dad promised to disown me if i did. A fair few of his mates have got sons in the police and they get nothing but crap from people. Not the kind of thing you want.

Two of my mates went to America for 6 Months to coach after finishing uni they loved it over there near Detroit. They were lucky as one of them new someone who ran a coaching school over there who got them jobs. Going Ibiza for the summer would be awesome, i should have done it a while ago when i had a contact over there who could have sorted me out a bar job no problem, hes back over here now though. Ive got my season ticket for next year so it looks like i may have to stay in England for at least 1 more year!

I seem to have hijacked Wozz's thread - that wasn't my intention Wozz, sorry.

Thanks for the advice/insight everybody - especially Derek

I work within the world market for a major pharmaceuticals company. In this day and age - customer focus, dignity at work, teamwork, problem solving, effective comms and influence, are all very much a part of our day to day operation. I suppose it's been like that for the last 15 years to my knowledge. So no surprises there.

I’ve noticed the London ones are really going after fare dodgers all of a sudden, there are lots of the smaller South London stations which don’t have barriers so people don’t bother with tickets. They are clearly trying to get people who do a runner because they are also carrying a knife or whatever so it’s no bad thing

I've done the coaching in the US experience. I also covered the Illinois/Michigan areas. Best time of my life. Came back to finish my coaching qualifications and do a degree. Got bored of the degree and quit, and i'm about 6 months from finishing my coaching qualifications. So looking at going back full time in 2009.

I detest those jobs worths the BTP and the Ticket Inspectors and heres why:

Nottingham Away this year was horrendous. Me and my mate missed the last train back and had to stay in a hotel so we went to the station the next day, went up to the ticket inspector to ask whether we could "pay the difference" rather than have to buy another single fair back to Manchester when all hell broke loose. He started accusing us of fair dodging on the spot in front of loads of people. This really riled me as i had been honest from the start and had no intention of fare dodging, the British Transport Police get involved and we have to get escorted through the station in front of everyone like criminals and then interviewed!!! They also accused me of being a repeat offender, yet i have only been to nottingham 3 times in 3 years for the football and one of those times was by car!!
