Diego_Sideburns
Went to see Paul Heaton last night at The Slade Rooms, Wolverhampton. He was on good form and some of his lyrics written 25 years ago, such as Paupers will be paupers, bankers will be bankers Some own pennies in a jar, some own oil tankers What may sound like tomorrow could be ours today There's no more need for sorrow if we get off our knees to pray Time to end the praying Listen what they're saying Get up off your knees You can wag your finger till your finger's sore Shake your head till it shakes no more Countries will be countries, borders will be borders Some have lost their folks at war, some have given orders Don't wag your fingers at them and turn to walk away Don't shoot someone tomorrow that you can shoot today are just as relevant and thought-provoking as the ones he’s writing now, such as these from the 55 verse new album title track, Acid Country. Let aristocrats and ruling class Die trying to cross their moat Or accidentally catch themselves On rusty nail or spoke Let the middle classes blind themselves With disapproving glance And impale themselves upon the rail Of never giving chance And their call for war on poverty Is a smokescreen we don't need 'Cause the only war worth fighting for Is a war on their pure greed Now that's what I call quite brilliant. Diego_Sideburns
Went to see Eli ‘Paperboy’ Reed & The True Loves at Manchester’s Sound Control last night. Reed brings a modern slant to mid-60s soul music. To say that he wouldn’t have been out of place on a touring Stax/Volt soul revue from that era is the best compliment I can pay him. He sang, shouted and screamed with a passion that would have impressed James Brown. He also included some haunting slower songs, in a Sam Cooke style, and showed that he’s also an excellent rhythm guitarist. The main difference from last time I saw him, over two years ago, was that he’s lost his brass section – probably one of the cuts arising from the economic recession – I blame the Coalition! The crowd included a wide age-range from about 14 upwards, and they were willing to party like it was 1965, genuinely clamouring for a hip-shakin’ encore, rather than standing about waiting for the inevitable one to happen. P.S. For those who give two hoots for omens, on the way home a barn owl flew across the road in front of the car. A good omen for Exeter? Zorrro
I'm listening to the sound of a penny dropping. Is the Puressence album good, then? I didn't bother with them again after Planet Helpless. Only Forever's one of my favourite albums ever though.
