FAO Barry Owen & Oldham Athletic

The only thing the TTA would be lying about is telling us they want nothing more than promotion - if they sell Lee Hughes, the simple fact is you dont sell your best striker if you are going for promotion (or your best winger for that matter) fair enough we are a selling club and we will be for a long time yet, attendencies are down, the credit crunch etc but everyone knows if we go up theres a lot more money in the championship, attendencies will rise etc surely the business brains of the TTA know this!! Whats the point in taking a step forward then 2 back?? The only way they will lie to us is by selling Lee Hughes (and chris taylor) but then blab on about they want promotion!!!

The Chris Porter situation changed everything for TTA, they gambled with us getting promotion with him (admittidly after they recived assurances from the player) and then lost the lot. There's no way they will take that risk again.

Selling Hughes and "blabbing on" promotion is no lie(of course they want promotion), it's just sound business sense sadly.

So TTA have to gamble on the following scenario's then ?

Keep Hughes here until the end of the season and hope that we get promotion, if not he leaves on a freebie as he wants Championship football.

Keep Hughes here against his wishes and he pisses about until the end of his contract, not giving 100%

Probably would lose him anyway in the summer as his wages we could not afford, Div 1 or Championship.

Lose potentially £300K - £400K in the process.

A serious question : What would you do ?

Well thats football isnt it!! but in business spend a bit to make a bit! but in our case spens a bit to make a lot! If he doesnt want to sign another contract then so be it cash in but if he wants to stay then offer him a decent wage! its a small price to pay!

If were losing £15k why does Sheridan continue to bring in players that he never plays, e.g Maher ( Won't have been cheap ) O'Grady, Davies, Kalala, Lee ? All these players wages must add up to around the £10k mark.

Simple, we need a squad and we need players battling for places, and we need to account for injuries, especially with the transfer window.

Having a squad of 16 players and a starting 11 that picks itself leads to complacency amongst players if they know their gonna be playing week in week out

Really cant believe you have said that,

I will point a few things out to you

1) TTA as they have said themselves on many occasions do not have an endless pot of money

2) TTA are not taking the Chris Moore approach by chucking money at it and hoping it will work. They are trying to turn Oldham Athletic into a self sustainable business, and considering the losses at one point were a hell of alot more than 15k a week, id say their doing a bloody good job so far

Nobody is asking them to take the Chris Moore approach but just dont cash in on our best striker if they want promotion like they say whats the point?

But any championship club will easilly be able to offer him double what we can.

And if the 400k clause is true, and a club comes in with 400k, we dont have a choice but to accept the offer.

How are we ever going to get out of this league ? If everytime we are in a promising position we sell sell sell. I could understand if we were in a Huddersfield or Tranmere position with their seasons almost over but this could be a FAMOUS season for us. What sort of message does it send to other clubs. Scunthorpe get :censored: crowds so how come they are able to compete so consistently?

I agree, Shez should keep it simple and have 11 players who play consistently well every week and they should not ever want to leave and then this time next year we will be world champions.

But we didn’t sell last time we were in the playoffs, lost Porter to injury and didn’t have any funds to bring anyone else in. We then lost him on a free in the summer. How therefore do we always sell sell sell?

how many points are still up for grabs this season,

FAMOUS season? successful maybe but FAMOUS.. give over

scunthorpe sell there best players every year and have only competed in one season, not including this.

we have competed in the last 3 but didnt make it, after keeping our best players in januarys gone by

Scunthorpe sold one of their best strikers in the jan transfer window when they won this division, and they have also benefitted from a season in the championship, where they didnt spend silly money

But bottom line is that was 2007, growing economy

It is now getting towards 2009, we are in a recession.

Times change, and times are now harder than they were before.

You moan about selling him but then you say cash in if he dosent want to stay ... well maybe thats what the TTA are doing, yet you keep moaning despite you coming up with the same idea.

Its all IFs, Buts and Maybes.

Erm, because in recent seasons they have sold Keogh, Sharp and Patterson ... meaning they sell, sell, sell

If you remember the season when Scunny went up, they sold Andy Keogh half way through the season. Did the walls fall in, did the world end? No, they brought someone else in (an unknown Jermaine Beckford) and amazingly they still got promoted.

For gods sake, if we sell Chris and Hughesy other footballers will play instead, other footballers who can still score goals and can still win football matches. It will always happen, unfortunately we are not in control of keeping our best players - irresoective of what we offfer, there will always be someone willing to offer them more.

If they go - so what? Perhaps we might get a winger who will cros the ball instead of run with it, or a striker who doesnt get booked every game... Oldham will survive and we might still get promoted - just as we might still at present.

Sell em, dont sell em, who cares, I starting to decidedly not give a damn... its frigging league 1, there are so many other players who could do a job at this level, including those who are sat on our bench.

Scunthorpe replace quality with quality though. Sharp out Beckford in. Keogh out Hooper in. May be we should put our physio in charge.

And where is Beckford now? Back at his own club, he was only on loan. We may well bring in a replacement with the money made .. how on earth can you tell if we will when no transfer has taken place yet!

Beckford was only a loan though and at the time his wages were probably peanuts. They didnt spend loads in the championship either, and will have benefitted from increased gates and tv revenue.
