Everybody Draw Mohammed Day

Recommended Posts

I'd also like to see how many people would join in if it was Jesus or the Christian God being satirised on TV and then they had a draw Jesus day.

Noone would care if people drew Jebus. I've certainly never heard of a christian threatening violence over the depiction of Jebus. So draw Jebus day (or satirise Jebus day) would be somewhat pointless if we are already free to do it (if we wanted) without needing to look over our shoulders.

If of course Christians happened to be getting as hysterical as the minority of muslims are now, and threatening or committing violence, then of course people would be joining in on "draw jebus day". I actually expect more people would, since we are so much more surrounded by Christians.

You've never been to the Deep South/Bible Belt in the States have you? The Christians can get very violent- just ask Madonna

I'm more likely to take part this afternoon than I was in the morning  I am slightly in two minds over this one. I do for example applaud the courage of the editors who re-printed those cartoons that there was a big hoo-ha over in Denmark (IIRC). I very much agree with Ackey that it's up to the believer what they believe and I see no reason at all on a point of principle because someone else believes a load of mumbo-jumbo. On the other hand there's no harm in just trying to get along with people and being nice, this thing seems likely to be supported by lots of people for lots of different reasons so I wouldn't be comfortable putting my name to it and being associated with possible pointless abuse/seeking to cause offence for its own sake.

Those 'merkin right wing christians of the southern states soon get upset if you draw Jesus as he almost certainly was - i.e. as a dark skinned, dark haired Arab, rather than a light skinned, blond haired arian.

I've never heard of anyone coming close to harm over such a depiction though.

Besides, South Park showed Jebus doing internet porn in the same episode as the faux mohammed in the bear costume. I didn't hear a peep from anyone about that.

Are there many christians on here ?

I don't particularly like it to be frank but I can recognise humour personally... I don't actually think South Park set out to offend, they set out to take the piss...

You set out to offend... but its ok because it was in the name of freedom of speech ?

I think people should have the freedom to worship without prejudice... I don't think its ok to use some of the small examples of when religious people go OTT to justify basically bullying the masses... Turn the :censored: other cheek... Plenty of religious people do that as well..

They were taking the piss out of people who take themselves and their religion too seriously. So much so that they feel they can impose it on others. They were taking the piss out of the people who censor themselves out of fear. There is no difference between the sentiments of south park and the sentiments of those who support "draw mohammed day". It is not about causing offence, it is about showing that we are free to do something that might make them take offence, in spite of the threats. We are showing that intimidation will not work.

You still don't get it do you? Have you seen the Skepchick video? Did you watch the AronRa video all the way through? Their views are exactly my views on this whole "draw mohammed day" thing. Are they looking to cause offence too, or are you just picking on me?

I think people should have the freedom to worship without prejudice...

Am I, or anyone else who supports this day stopping anyone from worshipping whatever invisible man they want?

Who's bullying the masses? As I already told you, most muslims aren't going to care about this, so obviously we are not targetting masses. It's the ones that do care that need to get over themselves, and realise that we live in a civilised society where sticks and stones may break my bones but words (or cartoons) will never hurt me.

In nut shell. If you are going to get upset by something so mundane then you deserve to be upset by this. And you deserve to be ridiculed for doing so. But either way noone can tell me or any other freedom loving person who I can or cannot ridicule, satirise, critisise or draw.

Over-sensitive? Frightened? Backwards? It seems all you gotta do these days to shut down a few Islamic countries is draw a picture of something that cannot be depicted. Strange. Perhaps, their combined population is too frothed up to be allowed to see them, I suppose there's some sense in that - countries that are whipped up into a seething frenzy baying for blood by Kerazy Kleriks doesn't make for a safe place. But hey, we'll stop drawing for the other 364 days and they'll carry on threatening for the rest of the year. Extreme religion sucks up the weak minded.

When I see hate - and I mean hate - from whoever it may be on youtube or Facebook or whatever, I read it, I make my mind up, laugh - and then I leave. They are free to post their crap all day long. I talk to my friends about it and we all poke fun at them. End of story.

See this is where I would disagree frankly. The moderate muslims may not be the one making the death threats, they may even laugh, but it doesn't mean that underneath they are not insulted. This is not about religion, or freedom of speech or offense, its the inability of two races to get on. In principle I think on many levels you are correct and what this day stands for has a very valid point, but trying to take the world view, it will only yet again highlight the differences between the muslim and western cultures and I can't see how that is a good thing.

Good post...

I think people need to step back and see the wider picture where this sort of stuff takes us. There was a fantastic doc on the BBC which I posted further up on the EDL which shows the growing tensions between the two cultures. Its kind of scary. It shows some of the more radical fringes of both cultures.

If good decent people view this as being ok then it paints a worrying picture going forward. I totally agree with freedom of speech... I just think this is a poor way of expressing it.

Having visited China I can ensure you there are bigger battles to be won than this.

Oh Contraire! South Park's creators openly admit that causing offence is part of their remit. They like to 'poke the bear' - so to speak.

First, being a Muslim is a choice and not a race.

Second, referring back to my previous posts, why should a religion have preferential treatment in the eyes of what can and can't be said due to 'offence'!?

If me and 100 million others decided we found the word "green" offensive then, rightly, we'd be told to stop being idiots and get on with our lives. If 100 million people can provide a fictional book that was written 2,000 years ago they get mollycoddled and told that they have a right to their religion and that we should stop using the word "green".

An exaggerated example, no doubt, but the founding principals are based well within fact.

Indeed. And they are, almost certainly, going to be the dominant force in global economics for the foreseeable future - as their efforts to artificially create a middle class seem to be coming along swimmingly.

Being religious is not the same as joining your bands fan club you know...

You TOTALLY miss the point... Why cause offence to anyone on purpose ? Why not try to respect peoples feelings...
