BP1960 Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 (edited) Not taking anything away from a great display but personally I think leaving no players outside the penalty area when defending free kicks is asking for trouble as the area is often so crowded the keeper can't get a clear view of the ball and inevitably if cleared the ball will be launched back again into the danger zone by the attacking team. Breakaways are also less likely. It's not only Latics, but many teams adopt this tactic, surely the smaller players like Bembo Leta, Furman and Alessandra would be better employed outside the penalty area than inside ? I would be interested to hear from Latics coaches the benefits of this tactic and why it was constantly used last Saturday. Edited August 15, 2010 by BP1960 Quote

Not only free kicks but corners there were a couple of occassions were the ball was cleared and all too easily picked back up by county to charge back at goal...was noticed by a couple of us as a potential for future problems...even just one player to pressure the clearance Quote

Perhaps we will be working on defending set pieces in training this week. Quote
steveoafc Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 Yeah we commented on this at corner kicks too, surely leaving someone like bembo-leta up would at least give us an outlet, it's far too easy at present for the opposition to come straight back at us. Quote
lookers87 Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 Seems to be de-riggeur in football at the moment to have everyone back. You see it time and again across all the divisions and international football (certainly the bigger nations). So it isn't only us. They'll be a bunch of stats somewhere that's caused the shift, I'd always take the old line of leaving 3 players on the halfway line, thereby meaning 4 oppo players in the box, still leaves man each and 2 on the posts. MaskedOwl Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 also bembo lita was marking one of their tallest players at times! Quote
fleetwood Blue Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 We have conceded 1 goal in 2 league games and we have scored 5, carry on as you are i say. Quote

Aye – commented on this ‘new’ tactic in the World Cup – I’m sure there’s some geeky professor of football somewhere who’s undertaken a study into this & has come to the conclusion that the best defence of corners & deep free-kicks is to have everyone back. To be honest I’m not so sure on it; personally I’d prefer to leave at least 1 up; so that the opposition need to have a minimum of 2 back themselves. I think it invites pressure on the 2nd phase (the ball back in if you will) and it packs out the penalty area unnecessarily for me too but; hey – what do I know? If we’re going to continue with it; I’m sure there’ll be enough stats soon enough to balance a proper for & against............But Djeny marking Krystian Pearce? I really am amazed that didn’t bite us on the arse!! Edited August 16, 2010 by slystallone Quote
