When is a 2-0 lead not a winning position?

Recommended Posts

This season is my 25th as a Latic and surprisingly enough there have been very few instances of us throwing away two goal leads to LOSE a game.

86/87 nope, but we did overturn a 2-0 deficit to beat Leeds 3-2 at Home in the Littlewoods Cup

87-88 nope, but I remember us being 2-0 at Shrewsbury at HT but winning 3-2 (Palmer 3) and coming from 2-0 to force a draw on a few occasions

88-89 nope

89-90 nope, remember forcing draws after being 2 down v Everton, Swindon and Portsmouth

90-91 ZDS Cup, 2-0 at Sheff Utd in no time....lost 7-2 (painful!!!) blew a 2 goal lead at Hillsborough to draw 2-2. came from 2 down to force draws at Hull and of course THAT game v Sheff Wed

91-92 nope, almost blew a 2 goal lead v Notts County after they recovered but we nicked it 4-3, came from 2 doawn at home to Man Utd but lost 6-3 in the end

92-93 nope, came from 2 don to force draws v City, Leeds, Everton and Tranmere in the FAC, came from 2 down at QPR and still lost

93-94 nope, Blew a 2 goal lead v Coventry to draw 3-3

94/95 nope, we came from 2 down to draw a Burnden Park

95/96 nope, but we did blow a 2 goal lead v Millwall at BP to draw

96/97 nope

97/98 nope, Blew a 3 goal lead to draw 4-4 with Bristol Rovers, came from 3-1 with Burnley to draw 3-3

98/99 No, but after being 3-0 up vs Crewe in the League Cup, we lost 4-3 on aggregate!

99/00 Blew a 2 goal lead at Cambridge but still won 3-2, and we were already 1-0 up at Bristol Rovers, missed a pen and ultimately lost 3-2

00/01 no

01/02 Chesterfield 2-0 up but lost 4-2, threw away a 2 goal lead at Bin Dippers to draw 2-2, we came from 3-1 down to draw 3-3 at Rectum, came from 2 down at Port Vale but still lost.

02/03 no but we came from 2 down in the LDV v Carlisle but still lost, came from 2 down to draw 2-2 at Plymouth.

03/04 no

04/05 no, came from 2 down to beat Walsall 5-3

05/06 2-0 up at the Gay Farm lost 3-2, Blew a 3-1 lead at Brentford to draw 3-3, came from 2 down to draw with Swindon

06/07 nope, came from 2 down but still lost at Bournemouth, was 2-0 down v Orient drew 3-3, came from 2 down to force draws v Orient and Brentford

07/08 nope, but 2 up v Donny drew 2-2 in the FAC, 2 down at Accrington won 3-2, 2 down v Crewe won 3-2

08/09 nope 2 up at Millwall, had to rely on a last minute winner, was 2-0 up at Hartlepool and cruising, suddenly 3-2 down down to 10 men and had to settle for a 3-3 draw. 3-1 down v Millwall won 4-3, 2-0 down at Colchester drew 2-2, 2 down at Cheltenham in the FAC drew 2-2, 2 down at Peterborough drew 2-2.

09/10 nope but we came from 2 down to draw with Colchester

10/11 Peterborough 2 up but lost 5-2

So it doesn't happen very often and whilst its disappointng we shouldn't be too despondent. Over the last 25 years we've come back more times than the opposition has against us.

there have been a few occasions where teams have equalised after being 2 down only to take their foot off the peddle, I was hoping that was going to happen yesterday only for Kieren Lee to give the ball away, but like I said in another thread I always felt we weren't out of it until they got the 4th with 8 minutes left

I was absolutely irate after that game due to BR's antics (timewasting and very, very dirty). But it is the best game I've ever seen.

I think the main conclusion from that then is that in 13yrs, Bristol Rovers haven't changed one single bit

PS Seriously, was that 13yrs ago? Jesus wept!
