Diego_Sideburns
Sheffield Wednesday, Hillsborough, Sheffield, S6 1SW. The West Stand is also known as the Leppings Lane End. The lower tier of this Stand was the scene of the tragic events of 1989, when 96 fans died attending the F.A. Cup Semi-Final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. There is a memorial outside the stadium near the main entrance. Up to 3,700 away fans can be accommodated in the upper tier of this Stand, which has a number of large supporting pillars restricting the view. One corner of the stadium between the North and West Stands is filled with uncovered seating. On the other side of the West Stand is an electric scoreboard, under which is tucked a Police Control Box. Disabled facilities: There are 88 wheelchair spaces with places for helpers, mainly at the front of the North Stand. There are also 58 seats for ambulant disabled supporters and their helpers. Visually-impaired supporters can use a headset which broadcasts club commentary of the match. Anyone interested should contact a steward within the ground. For any other disabled access issues contact Pauline Bronks at Hillsborough on 0870 999 1867. How to get there: By Train: Sheffield Railway Station is situated in the town centre about 3 miles from the stadium. By Supertram: Take the South Yorkshire Supertram (signposted from the Railway Station) towards Middlewood Road (yellow route). Exit at the Leppings Lane stop, which is a short walk from the stadium. Supertram is a good method of transport and there are various park and ride facilities around the city. One suggestion is to stop at the Park and Ride at Meadowhall, just off junction 34 of the M1, and travel to Hillsborough which takes about 20-30 minutes. It is also wheelchair friendly. The cost to park & ride is £3.60 per day, which entitles you to parking and use of the entire Supertram network. By Bus: From the Railway Station, Flat Street Bus Terminus is a one-minute walk - cross over at the pedestrian crossing, and follow the signs. Bus numbers 53, 77 and 80 all run from Flat Street to Hillsborough. From Angel Street, buses 74 and 74a run to Hillsborough. From Snig Hill, buses 85 and 86 run to Leppings Lane. From the Sheffield Transport Interchange, bus 57 runs past the stadium towards Stocksbridge. On matchdays bus frequency should be approximately every 15 minutes. By Car: From the North/South/East - Exit the M1 at junction 36 and follow the A61 towards Sheffield. Continue along the road for approximately 4 miles until the second roundabout. Take the third exit (Leppings Lane) - the stadium is situated on the left-hand side. It certain directions this is not the shortest way to the ground but is said to be the best option to avoid traffic congestion. From the South/East (likely to be congested on match-days) - Leave the M1 at junction 33 and turn left towards Sheffield City Centre on the "Sheffield Parkway" dual carriageway. Continue until the end of the Parkway, when you will come to Park Square roundabout. Turn right and continue to follow signs for the A61 towards Barnsley. Signs for Hillsborough are also prominent. The stadium is situated 3 miles from the city centre and is on your left-hand side after Hillsborough Park. From the West - Take the A57 for Sheffield. As you approach the city the road splits in two - take the left fork onto the Rivelin Valley Road (A6101). Continue for approximately 3.75 miles, turn left (onto the one-way system) and follow the road round to the right onto Holme Lane. This road then becomes Bradfield Road. At the junction with the A61 Penistone Road, turn left towards Barnsley. Hillsborough Stadium is on the left after Hillsborough Park. Where to eat: There are fast food outlets on Middlewood Road. Inside the stadium there is a range of Shire Foods pies available. The refreshments though are served from behind a metal mesh, which gives the area a prison-like feel. Where to drink: NOTE: Alcohol is not available to supporters in the away section of the stadium. Pubs to avoid include The Park, The Gate and The Travellers, because of the large volume of home supporters who visit them. In the past away fans went in the Horse and Jockey pub, on Wadsley Lane (leading uphill from the Leppings Lane end), but apparently this has now closed. The Wadsley Jack on Rural Lane is about a 15 minute walk (uphill though) from the away end, and continuing up the road past the Wadsley Jack there is the Rose & Crown pub which also welcomes away supporters. Two pubs highly recommended by fans of other clubs are the Norfolk Arms and the Red Lion in Grenoside although, they are a fair distance from the stadium. The Pheasant and the New Bridge Inn, are both on Penniston Road, which is the main A61 that runs by the stadium. Head up the A61 in the opposite direction to Sheffield City Centre (Meadowhall & M1) and you will reach the pub on your left just before Wadsley Bridge. The Hillsborough Hotel near the Langsett/Primrose View tram stop (two stops from Hillsborough going towards Meadowhall/Halfway) has a range of real ales, hot food and is home to the Crown Brewery. From the tram stop cross over the road and walk back about 50 metres, in the direction of the stadium. Afterwards just hop back on the tram (Yellow route - destination Middlewood) and get off at the Leppings Lane stop. If you prefer to stay in the city centre and get a taxi or the Supertram then of course you have a bigger choice of pubs. WARNING: You could be sat in traffic on a match-day for quite some time so allow sufficient time to get to the stadium. Pubs of note in the city centre are the Howard and the Globe which are near the train station and the Old Monk welcomes away fans and serves food. Facilities nearby: There are various banks and cash machine outlets available in Hillsborough centre. An ATM machine is also available close to the stadium on Middlewood Road. Beware though because it is often empty on match days. Edited September 14, 2010 by Diego_Sideburns
rudemedic
Unlike Diego, I remember a year when the programme printed out directions and they were the ones for the South/East (but more complicated). So Diego >>>>>> Gordon

I lived 5 mins away from there last year, in that are I prefered the Graduate betwee the Globe and the Old Monk, never went in the Howard, the Old Monk is alright but a bit pricey. But the best pubs/bars in Sheffield are along Division/Devonshire Street, just round the corner from West Street Tram stop

daniel
does anyone know wether the tram system will be in use after the game, with the train station being a fair distance is it going to be tight to get to the station for 22.11 when the train leaves? there is one at 22.47 but that takes around 90 minutes and doesnt get back to manc until around 00.15 so they'll be no buses at that time. Tommy_Fent
Bit daft some of stuff on here. The A57 Snake a big NO NO for an evening run unless you live in Glossop. The traffic alone at Mottram DIRE... Directions from anywhere in Oldham.... Quickest route by far Oldham .... Greenfield..... Holmfirth...... turn right at lights into centre take 2nd right and follow road up hill past Longley Farm.... just keep going until you reach an obvious junction signposted Sheffield. A616 Whamms Road towards Flouch Inn. DANGEROUS ROAD for speeding fatal crash last Sunday afternoon in front of me. Road meets Stocksbridge bypass. WATCH for average speed cameras for several miles. Go past CORUS and drop down hill and start climbing up hill again road has two lanes at this point. Turn left for Wortley Pennistone BUT at junction of A629 turn right joins A61 passing petrol station on left. Right hand turn onto A61 through Grenoside and drops down straight to Hillsborough. Takes less than an hour unless unlucky. Plenty of places to park and ground a LONG WAY before City Centre. Parking at Pond Street for a match a bit odd..... like parking in Shaw for BP.... Parking is free in City Centre in Devonshire Quarter for sure as just checked the signs. Bet you can park for free before ground near shops as you drop down to ground before Bridge? On left near Halfords KILNER WAY??? Nice pub Devonshire Cat on Wellington Street only sells 300 beers. Graduate pub of choice in centre. Dont forget to try a Pork Sandwich lol as only thing on sale near Hillsborough. you know my favourite places in Sheffield although I don't go to the Dev Cat enough, and I live in Glossop when I'm not at Uni and know all about the nightmare that is Mottram Moor, the best way I find to get from Oldham to Sheff is just to do it via the Motorways

The tram system will be in use, but that will be tight too if the game finishes at all late. I dont know why I know this, but its 17 mins from Leppings lane to cathedral (central), the station is a few minutes on from that. So unless you get out of the game dead on time, walk to the tram stop, and a tram is there waiting for you you are going to be cutting it fine... i'd imagine its a little busy straight after the game too.... So either make sure you leave a bit early, or chill and get the 22.47..

Yard Dog
Setting off between 5.30pm and 6pm. Best route from Royton? Done various routes to Sheff in the past, but unsure which is the best at this time of day. Google says Woodhead Rd or Snake. I'm thinking getting through Hyde and Mottram might be an arse....Holmfirth - Penistone ?
Yard Dog
As above Holmfirth but bypass Penistone by cutting corner. turn at lights in Holmfirth over Zebra and right up hill at 1 oclock. ONLY town is centre of Holmfirth so relatively ok. Do this run regularly and USUALLY the best by far. Mottram well mad if you try it at that time. Even from StalyVegas its busy. Snake ....not good at that time IF you get stuck behind any sort of traffic. Takes about 34 miles from Springhead. 50 mins to an hour although roadworks at Grenoside one set of lights (this Sunday) but you do drop straight onto ground on right side for getting away. Cheers. I'm thinking getting through Hyde and Mottram might be an arse....Holmfirth - Penistone ? Big sign at the bottom of the snake pass yesterday said that they are doing maintanence work on the snake and it will be shut from 7pm to 6am everynight from the 27th of sept to 15th of oct so if your going this way only go over the snake if your going early woodhead road is best option, and if you are best come through stalybrdige and down through mottram as the traffic if you go M60 M67 will be a nightmare. GlossopLatic
Have they finished the resurfacing on the hill up to Mottram from StalyVegas as that was a nightmare a couple of weeks back. Still think from Royton the Greenfield, Holmfirth, Flouch Inn, Stocksbridge (part way) best route for gauranteed movement. Dad did the journey in 45 mins past ground last night bringing my kayak over to Uni. Other than the lights in Holmfirth its relatively a staight run until you get to lights on outskirts of Sheffield. The work on mottram has been done yeah so slightly less traffic hell than usual this wouldn't be an issue if Glossop had a bypass
