Set play observations

I'm well aware there's a set-piece problem, just pointing out we aren't that bad at them either.

I'm sorry, I have to disagree, we have been poor on them for a few seasons now, how many have we scored percentage wise from corner kicks ?.. but it's the defensive side I'm more concerned about.

For a few seasons we have been poor at them but attacking-wise we are better. Defensive side certainly needs tightening up a lot.

So it's a recent thing rather something that's blighted us all season. Get the boys working hard on them.

Alas I can't see much changing Macca, set plays in the air (which is the major problem) need strong commanding players to either defend them or attack them, Latics have few of those.

You've convinced me. We're going nowhere. Anyone want to buy a season ticket?

We've been s*** at attacking corners since haining left, then Trotman.

We're also s*** at defending them because we dont have a keeper who is willing to come further than a yard out to claim a corner, even though he towers over most attacking players and would easily knock them away.

That's the spirit!!!

not just set pieces its balls into the box that have caused us problems all season (saw it in pre season but hoped we'd have ironed out the problems by now), the good news is teams havent looked like scoring playing an intricate passing game against us but more work on clearing crosses is clearly needed!

And yet all the other sides are good at defending them.

All of them.

This /\

Trotman was the last Latics player I saw who actually appeared to want to get on the end of a corner consistently. He used to tear around the edge of the box prior to the kick getting taken in an attempt to shake off his marker and then when the ball was in flight; he made a concerted effort to get on the end of it.

For what it’s worth; I think we’re too stationary on corners at both ends of the park.

Attacking wise; we lack decent movement and any players really attacking the ball.

Defensively; Brill doesn’t command his area & come to claim anywhere near enough – and we don’t tend to pick up runners who attack the space / flighted ball.

It looks like it will continue to be a bit of an Achilles-Heel for us until something changes. I thought M’Voto would make a difference at both ends; corner wise – but sadly he hasn’t.

It is something that can be improved upon though – here’s hoping that the side is working on both attacking & defending corners in training.

As someone else has said though; we now look far less of a soft touch in terms of conceding ‘average’ goals from open play so improvement from last season has been made there..........
