Yoofs win 5-2 at Bury in FA Yoof Cup

Recommended Posts

A well deserved result tonight.

The only disappointments for TP will be the 2 gifts presented to Bury and the fact that we could have won by a bigger margin.

It was pleasing to see a group of 16 and 17 year old kids, playing the ball out from the back for virtually the whole 90 minutes. Whilst mistakes are bound to happen from this at youth level, they will become better players in the long term.

1 down within 2 minutes from a sloppy passage of play across the back line, we came back to take the game to Bury and stormed into a deserved 2-1 lead, only to be pegged back as a speculative 25 yarder somehow crept under the right hand of keeper Connor.

The 2nd half was nearly all Latics as we continued to pass the ball from front to back for the majority of the half, especially after TP questioned the players why they had started to play long in the first 5 minutes after the break.

Some notable performances from 2nd year centre forward Crompton (despite picking up a yellow card for petulance by booting the ball clean out of the ground) and effervescent right winger Burns, who tortured the Bury full back all night and rounded of his night by slotting the 5th goal.

Apart from the football, the one thing that stood out tonight was the standard of refereeing. If you thought Saturdays ref was fussy, the guy tonight must be a long long way from getting on the list for the football league. 3 times in the 1st 40 minutes he hauled play back when an obvious advantage should have been played (for both sides by the way) and was too quick to pull up a number of challenges from both teams. To be fair when he missed the blatant elbow on Midfielder Mellor he wasn't in a position to have seen it. However, the linesman, sorry referees assistant, was perfectly placed to witness the assault no more than 15 yards directly in front of him yet somehow managed to be looking elsewhere, muck to TP & MP's annoyance.

Well done boys and TP & MP. Here's to a home draw in the next round.

PS. By the way, there's a 1st year forward by the name of Jack Laird, who I have seen a few times now, both last season and this. He knows where the onion bag is as his scoring record shows. Tonight he was all over the place, just couldn't get in the game, which was passing him by. I said to my friend that he was doing nothing, but that he is the type of player who all of a sudden comes alive. Surely enough at 3-2 up, he at last gets a good ball into his feet and with a cracking 1st touch kills his marker with a turn that puts him clean through on goal and bang 4-2. He still has a lot to learn, but is another to keep an eye on.

Agree with all that Harry. Whilst they did indeed pass it out from back to front on many occasions the two centre half's mixed it up well with some fantastic raking cross field balls out to the wingers. Pin point cross field balls at that, great to see. I was impressed with the two cente mids also. Both big and strong in the air and running with the ball. All in all TP as something to work with within this group.

Excellent appraisal of the game. First Class.

Was also nice to see so many older players going along to lend their support.

Spotted Josh Ollerenshaw, Dale Stephens, Dj Bembo, Jason Jarrett amongst others.

TP talking to LW about last nights victory in the youth cup match at Bury. I think he is spot on with his view this side is better than the one two years ago and that 5/6 players within it, could in time make the step up. The next round could be as far off as 6 weeks away however, make the effort to go and watch. You'll be pleasantly surprised at the standard of football played.

wot makes this even more exciting is that 2 years on 5 of the team that performed great at St James' (was up visiting lil' sis) that night have featured in the first team. Eaves and Brooke would be guarenteed in every 18 this term w/o the sale and injury (brooke perhaps starting), bembo, who actually looked the worst of the 5 has had a big impact in 10/11. Millar wasn't even ready for that side and has been top draw when the chance has arisen and the best of the lot that night young mcgrath has had the worst possible run of injuries.

So if this side is definately stronger then the future looks bright if we can keep the big club sniffers away for long enough!

I’ve seen the lad a few times now; only once this season granted but lots of times last season – and that is the big worry I have about him. Attitude. To me; as a player; he’d be making the 1st team bench this season; giving him a few run outs if the game is safe with 5 mins to go & the like. But; he does appear to me to have a bit of an attitude issue. I have seen him be petulant & mouthy; to the officials, opposition & his team-mates. At the end of the day; he’s an 18 year old lad trying to make his way in the game & the best way to do that is to knuckle down and work hard – and keep the petulance on the back-burner.

I think; playing wise, he stands a good chance of making a breakthrough – he just needs to be very; very careful that his arrogance & petulance don’t hold him back.

As for Laird; I’ve not had chance to watch him yet – but I’ve noticed he has scored a fair few this season from the reports on the ‘fishul. What ‘sort’ of striker is he; small & nippy (like a Bembo) or is he a big man type? (like an Eaves)

Lovely to read of a team playing with proper wingers.

Small and nippy. He previously held the Liverpool Schools under-15 scoring record (just like a certain Wayne Rooney).

He turned down an approach from Manure to stick with us as he felt he'd progress better at this level.
