the_mighty_bosh
This has just come to me so maybe it needs a bit more thought... Should the Football League offer bonuses to clubs who fill a certain percentage of their stadium capacity? They could be paid out monthly or yearly and would encourage teams to lower ticket prices to bring more people through the turnstiles. E.g. a team who fills 75% of their stadium over the season gets paid £300k in bonuses, which could make up for the club's shortfall for lowering their prices. The league would benefit from a increase in popularity and exposure of their product. Thoughts?
opinions4u
If we knock down another stand, perhaps the RRE, we could gain from this.
LaticsLegend
Probably wouldn't work. Teams like MK Dons and (although not applicable anymore) Darlington would be at a disadvantage. Probably more flaws in there but I see where you're coming from.
oafc_lover
why not a certain percentage of attendance increase from the average of your last 3 seasons or something like that?

oldhamandy1
The problem would with that it would teams of expanding the stadium because they would not lose out of the money they are spending on it, but also the reward.

This would have a terrible impact on lower league football and cement the position of the "bigger" clubs... You would be VERY nervous about expanding your ground and increasing capacity if such a bonus was brought in. Ok you can throw up the argument about ghost town stadiums etc etc... but in the end, you don't want to impose any restrictions on any clubs expanding and trying to climb the ladder... Teams like us that intend to expand their stadium for commercial reasons and non-matchday income would carry on with their plans regardless as the long term gains would far outweigh the bonus they wouldn't receive (see Walsall's model). Surely the best reason to increase capacity is when you believe that the seats can be filled with an increased capacity? Darlington is a great example of a club that expanded excessively to climb the ladder and now have it as a weight around their neck. Yes there are a few examples of teams thinking big and succeeding but the ones that will survive at the higher levels are the ones that have the fanbase to maintain it (compare Brighton to Wigan in a few years time). Besides shouldn't clubs be encouraged to grow at a steady and sustainable rate?
