Andy Goram Dennis Irwin Earl Barrett Paul Warhurst Maurice Whittle John Sheridan Bobby Johnstone Alan Groves Roger Palmer Andy Ritchie Bert Lister Bargains like these are out there today, it's just a matter of scouting and a willingness to give players a chance to shine after being hidden in the background at previous clubs. Not sure who I'd take out of the midfield but I'd definitely include Wellens in that team. I didn't want to see Vernon go but the straight swap of the two was a brilliant deal. I toyed with Wellens and yes it was a 'Bosman' but more of a fiddle so Blackpool could avoid United's percentage clause, so they got Vernon
ghostofcecere
It's amazing really that no too long ago we could sign Blackpool's best player off them
futchers briefs
As those of you fortunate enough to have listened to Joe Royle will know, the days of being able to pick up an almost entire team up for nowt are sadly gone. The odd individual maybe, but many of the players in the top/championship clubs' reserves teams are already on far greater salaries than we could offer - hence the popularity of the loan market today. The likes of your Denis Irwins, Andy Ritchie and the Dodger were on next to nowt at their respective clubs and we could then offer a reserve team player a competitive salary and the guarantee of first team football - something not valued it seems by many of todays modern player. But some good choices of bargain players there chaps.

There were and always will be bargains futch, not all reserve team players are on good money and the art is spotting those who are better than what you have got at the right price. Many Premiership and Championship clubs are overloading with experience and some young talents don't get a look in. For example it will be interesting to see what happens to Harry Bunn at Man City, someone who won't be on massive wages there.

futchers briefs
You're both correct, there will always be examples of it going on still - mt point really was that it is becoming much more difficult and as in Matt Smiths case, a few brave gambles need to be took. That team looks pretty good to me. Are we allowed to factor in the overall gain made on seconding Rick Holden out to City though?

I remember hearing an ex-player saying he found this madness, because when you retire and are sitting with the kids / grandkids telling them you finihed 4th three times in your career is less impressive than showing them cup winners medals. It's another example of the way 'money' has changed the game. Back to the OT I'd include Lee Hughes in the list as well. Very good player at this level, and did a great job in the 2 seasons we had him. Barrett and Irwin are probably truely the best examples we have ever had? Continued to play top flight football after we didn't, and in the case of Irwin became one of the best full-backs in the league.

Scapegoat
I initially put world rather than league, but changed it becuase of his nationality he never really got chance to test himself fully on the international stage. However on reflection that is probably harsh - and he was a genuinely outstanding world class player.
c.hill12
tony carss and david eyres have to be the best double free signing the clib has made. lee hughes n kuqi would tear this league apart upfront this season

Lookers_Carl
If we can include youth team players, as some people have in theirs, based on players who I have seen in my time (1994-1995 season onwards) I would probably go for GK Gary Kelly (10k) RB Ian Snodin (Free) CB Sean Gregan (Free) CB Neal Trotman (Free) LB Andy Barlow (Youth) RM Chris Taylor (Youth) CM Tony Carss (Free) CM John Sheridan (Free) LM David Eyres (Free) FC Shefki Kuqi (Free) FC Lee Hughes (Free)
